I love buttermilk, but haven't drank any in many years.  Today I drank a glass and I just wondered, has anyone found that buttermilk either helps or hurts your UC??

Cultured buttermilk is very good for you if it's raw and from grass-fed cows.

Read Aajonus Vonderplanitz's books, "We Want to Live" and "The Recipe for Living Without Disease."

It will open up a whole new world for you. The diet is largely raw dairy in all forms. You can even use raw honey with it to make ice cream if you're so inclined. This diet has given me my life back and more.
Diagnosed February, 2007
Tried David Klein's fruitarian diet, went on 60 mg Prednisone, Tried the SCD (specific carbohydrate diet) None of it worked. (Except prednisone for a bit.)
Tried Primal Diet by Aajonus Vonderplanitz, but couldn't stick to it. Finally quit drinking alcohol, coffee and tobacco, and am now on the Primal Diet 100%.
Remission since November, 2009

I think most of the buttermilk sold in US stores probably has none of the health benefits of real cultured buttermilk. I wonder if it even has live organisms. I have cultured my own buttermmilk and of course that would have beneficial bacteria.

I have used commercial buttermilk in cooking and I haven't noticed any positive or negative symptoms from it. When I was younger, I remember buttermilk dressing always gave my stomach pain.

It won't hurt the fact that you have UC. If you're not lactose intolerant or don't get any symptoms..drink away.

one full glass might be too much whereas a half glass might be perfect...

Keep us posted.

I make buttermilk at home from the yogurt I make using VSL#3. After the yogurt is set, I just add some water with it in the blender and run the blender. Easiest thing, and it has all the benefits of the probiotic (VSL#3) used to make the yogurt. I drink a glass before going to bed. Also sometimes first thing in the morning. I think it helps.
