Last December I was hospitalized for 3 days for severe abdominal pain and a full body rash. I have had Left sided all these years but when I was hospitalized, my whole colon was inflamed shown via CT Scan. Before my hospitalization, I was having yellow stool only - no other symptoms of Uc. So I called my doc and he just wanted a stool sample. I never had a chance to get it to him because I went downhill pretty quickly. After I got out of the hospital, things were a bit shaky for a while but I am feeling better again. I had my follow up with my GI and he didn't seemed too concerned about the yellow stool; I was able to give him a stool sample and nothing was found. Now I am experiencing the yellow stool again with mild abdominal pain. Not as bad as before thank goodness! I also have been burping a lot and having stomach and intestinal pain after I eat. I already take Prilosec for acid reflux btw - not sure if this has anything to do with what I am experiencing.

Do any of you happen to know what would cause this cycle of yellow stool and abdominal pain - liver(tho my blood tests reveal things are fine - just had a blood test two days ago), Gallbladder etc? I've had the yellow stool off and on over the years, but it was more in the diarrhea form because I was flaring; I also had some green liquid mixed in. It comes and goes. I have an appt in a few weeks with my GI and I plan on bringing it up with him again but I just wanted to get some input before I go see him.

Green is bile, and is normal. Not sure what yellow is indicative of.

Sherry - I've had yellow randomly but I think it was due to medication. I remember when I was on colazal I had yellowish color but it wouldn't make sense for you to suddenly be seeing yellow from colazal after all this time.

This may help:

Here's what I found by googling:

Yellow stool can indicate that food is passing through the digestive tract relatively quickly. Yellow stool can be found in people with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Symptoms of GERD include heartburn, chest pain, sore throat, chronic cough, and wheezing. Symptoms are usually worse when lying down or bending. Foods that can worsen GERD symptoms include peppermint, fatty foods, alcohol, coffee, and chocolate.

Yellow stool can also result from insuffient bile output. Bile salts from the liver gives stool its brownish color. When bile output is diminished, it often first appears as yellow stool. If there is a greater reduction in bile output, stool lose almost all of its color, becoming pale or grey.

If the onset is sudden, yellow stool can also be a sign of a bacterial infection in the intestines.

Sherry...how yellow is yellow? Do you mean on the tp or in the toilet?

I agree with SN's comments...

How many bms daily are you having...and what's the consistency?

I'm having anywhere from 3-5 bms a day but it varies, sometimes less. I have no bleeding and I actually feel okay Uc wise. But the pain is random however the yellow stool is not. I will have it for about a week or two, then it goes away....comes back a month or two later and the cycle repeats. This has been going on for quite a while. Btw, the consistency is solid to "poopie chips" lol and it's like a clay yellow, possibly a bit on the gray side but only in cast.

I've not had yellow stools regularly, but maybe just once in a while - usually food-related.
I hope the pain decreases and this worry can come off your plate....!

Do you eat (or take) a lot of turmeric? I tried that last summer during a stubborn flare and there was a change of colour with my stool. maybe not as yellow as you are describing but a tinge was there.
