I'm in a pertty bad flare and it was suggested to go on a pure ensure diet for 3-5 day to give my digestive track a break from porcessing solid food. This may promote healing of the colon lining.  I call Abbotts Nutrician and they recommended Ensure Plus and the Ensure Clincial Strength. I just need to figure out my calorie intake.

Has anybody here tried this diet before? Any good results?

I've never had Ensure specifically, but during my hospital stay, they put me on a bowel rest diet - 2-3 days of NPO (but I also have IV fluids) and 1 day of heavy liquids - like vanilla shakes like Ensure.  It was helpful and was soothing and easy on my bowels.  Now that you bring it up, maybe I'll try this next time I have signs of a flare.

FYI, I drank Glucerna which was gluten and lactose free in homemade vanilla flavor. It wasn't too bad when I drank it cold.
*Currently in flare*
Diagnosed 5/2000 with UC, 28 years old female
Hospitalized 3/17-26/11
Prednisone (60mg) and cort enema
Fish Oil, multivitamins, calcium supplement, probiotic
To start azathioprine after f/u visit - on April 5th.

I have tried using the ensure and it actually made my diahrea 1000 times worse.  Look at the ingredients before drinking many of them contain  certain oils - canola, soy and coconut and for some of us they can worsen things.  I ended up in the hospital after drinking a few of them one day during my worst flare.   The diahrea got so bad that I became severly dehydrated and my husband had to bring me in to the emergency.  It was the worst feeling ever.

I tried two today mid-morning and mid-afternoon and had no problems. The trick is to drink it slowly over 30-60 minutes and follow up with water or tea so you don't get dehydrated. This is something you need to ease into and off of.

I got a follow-up with my doc tomorrow so I'll ask his professional opinion.

Sorry you had trouble with the ensure, puffed rice. Do you recall if you were drinking it too fast or started "cold turkey" on it?

I also heard some take it better warm or hot. Cold water does a number on me right now. I currently warm my refrigerator water up by putting it in the microwave for 20 seconds.

They've got a decent amount of sugar... so watch out for that. One book I read said that the ingredient "carageenan" was actually something used at high doses to bring about UC in primates. I have no clue if that's true though.

It always seems like you can't have this or that... so just give it a good try and see what your results are. If you find some liquid diet that doesn't have a lot of sugar PLEASE let me know. I am off of sugar now, so I don't do those drinks. I'd love to gain some weight, but it's hard without those as an addition.

Good luck.
26 year old male.
Left sided UC since 2003, moderate in severity

Working on a full approach to health this year, including anything that works.
-Taking probiotics, L-glutamine, antioxidants, vitamins
-Back to taking 4g pentasa/day, though I doubt it's effectiveness.

It's been a while since I drank Ensure but from what I remember, yes it contains carageenan. I did absolutely horrible on it! It also made me go to the bathroom with massive liquidy D. I used it as a supplement to my regular diet - trying to add calories so I could gain weight.

Whenever my gut needed a rest I have used elemental diets as opposed to ensure. There is almost no residue with the elemental and I found it generally effective in giving everything a chance to calm down. The longest I've done on it is 3 weeks but I have used them several times over the years including during pregnancy. I did lose weight on them as I think the recommended consumption was 6 to 8 small cartons a day but I found it took a while to build up to that many and even then I struggled to drink more than 4 a day.

Good luck I hope the ensure works for you.

I drink one Ensure every morning in addition to my "normal" diet. I've always been lean even though I've always been a very heavy eater. The only time I every really put on weight was my first year of college when I would go to the cafeteria with my unlimited meals and eat a good size meal four or five times a day in addtion to snacking.

I would definitely watch my sugar intake while on i since it has 20 g. I hardly evey eat desserts, never drink tea or soda, so I figure one/day is OK, and I've never noticed any problems.

Also, I always try to buy the Equate brand as they are a good bit cheaper (I think $2/six pack)

I try to drink it slowly, but the vanilla is soooo good it's usually gone in five or 10 seconds!

I know elemental diets are popular in Europe, but not in the US.  Don't you need a feeding tube to consume it? There's also a semi-elemental diet too.  I figure the ensure is the easier to try first.

The one I had was cartons to drink and called elemental 028 made by shs nutrition. I live in England and I don't think they're commonly used here for UC they are more often given to chrohns patients. The first one I had was way back in the 80's when it was called something like nutranel. That was pretty vile but the 028 is ok once you get used to it. You've got to be pretty single minded to stick to any liquid diet or else really sick.

I'm a pretty healthy, close to scd gluten free eater, and though I was shocked by the ingredients in (corn syrup etc.) ensure, when I was in the hospital last time I feel like it saved me. Normally I get really malnourished and dehydrated, but not this time. Now I drink ensure sometimes for breakfast. I think of it as a liquid vitamin with protein and fat. I have trouble eating in the morning, so this gets me started gently, and it does seem to keep my system calmer when I'm flaring.

Ensure has Corn Syrup solids in it...it's not as healthy as one would hope.

Ensure may have corn syrup in it, oils, sugars, etc- whatever it has though, I love it! It is so good, I can drink it for weeks & it never bothers me. I always had  hard time finding alternatives- when I really needed to rely on a liquid diet, I was far too sick to run around hunting down some obscure liquid food source! I prefer the rich dark chocolate, high protein one- I think it's now called Muscle Strength, or something... they've changed up their product names a bit, but seems like it's the same beverage. I was on their website yesterday & they have recipes on it- some sound pretty decent, drinks with pnut butter & such...

I survived on mostly Ensure Plus in the month between my hospital release for a horribly severe UC flare and my surgery date. I was super worried about slipping back into a flare which would have postponed my surgery, but that never happened. Ensure caused me no problems at all and in fact, really helped me put on enough weight to enter surgery in a healthier state.
-Officially diagnosed with UC in 2006, though had symptoms since 1999.
-Had mild/moderate symptoms continuously until severe flare in autumn 2010 which required 2-week hospital stay
-Took Asacol, Rowasa, Canasa and Prednisone to manage flares but meds stopped working
-Tried 1 infusion of Remicade but had excruciating joint pain and discontinued
-Had permanent ileostomy surgery 11/8/2010

It tastes great I'll give you guys that but it unfortunately also killed my stomach (I've tried it and Boost several times). My wife who 'just' gets occassional IBS flares cant drink it either, gas, bloating and many extra trips to the washroom for her.
C'est la vie...
