My colitis is left sided and my main problem is constipation, especially since I've been using colocort enemas. Metamucil is a life saver for me.
DX Pancolitis 2003. Subsequent flares limited to left side
Flare every 2-3 years.
Salofalk 12 tabs daily,
Probiotics: Primal defense, Ultimate Flora and VSL#3DS. Fiber: Psyllium and "super seed".
Allergic to Imuran

Current flare last 9 months.. No diarrhea.
Switched from Cortifoam to Colocort 2x daily.
Flared again while tapering. Tapering again very slowly.

I take Metamucil every night and have been for the last 15years.  It helps to bulk the stool making it easier to pass, absorbs the water in the colon,  helps for diahrea and constipation. Dont take the sugar free one it contains aspartame.

I've spent the better part of today reading old posts on this same subject...wondering if I should try this again.

My flare started Jan this year, but I was undiagnosed at that point, but tried, due to my weeks of d and bleeding. The metamucil went right through me. I then tried citrucel and showed no improvement. I asked my doc a week ago if I should try again and he didn't think it would make a difference now. He didn't tell me not to though...I'm trying it again beginning tonight because I have no blood, just loose d at this point.

I took it 5 years ago when I had severe bleeding and d. I didn't have a diagnosis then, but it slowed down the d and the blood stopped. I remember reading about "slowing down the transit time" and bulking. That's what I wanted and that it did accomplish! ...side note...I told my current doc about this and he thinks I had my first flare back then, just a fluke thing that it fixed itself.

I started then, 1 tsp in the am and 1 in the pm. I added more from there weekly and never had bad gas, cramping or bloating.

Keep us posted!

I've been taking metamucil for something like 25 years now. I take two heaping tablespoons a day, and a third spoon if I'm flaring and having loose stools.
I find it helps bulk up the stools and it makes them easier to pass. My GI years ago had recommended it so I'd "never have to strain again" and I have found that to be true.
When I need to go off it, as for the 5 days pre-colonoscopy, I find my stool smaller, less well-formed, and I find myself involved in the sort of involuntary spasming/straining.

My son's GI recommends Benefiber, also.....

When I'm flaring, I can't take fiber in any form. But now that I am in remission I decided to give Citrucel another go and I am finding it helps a lot to bulk up my stool. Citrucel is what my GI recommended because supposedly it produces less gas then the other forms of fiber. But everyone responds differently to these things.

I use the metamucil fiber bars @ work, but use konsyl fiber @ home. Two tablespoons daily. One morning. One night. I use it to bulk up the stool and it works. Have to watch alot of the fibers because they do contain extra junk you don't need. It's more important to me than my sulfasalazine.

I have been taking Metamucil for about 6 months now.  The first 3-4 weeks, it made me pretty gassey but that went away.  I take two spoonfulls in the morning.

It's probably a good thing, I'm sure I don't get enough fiber in my diet without it.

I've been using Metamucil for the past couple of weeks and it hasn't bulked up my stool yet. How much time should I give it? Or should I increase the intake? I'm afraid that increasing it will give me more diarrhea.

Bookworm, listen to your body. Some times Uc'ers just can't handle fiber. You can try upping it and see if you respond but if it increases D, then stop it until you are stable again or try a different type of fiber supplement.

This time around I noticed a difference in about 3 days. But when I am flaring, I can't do fiber or it increases my D 10 fold.

I was able to handle Benefiber. But then it stopped working, so I stopped fiber altogether. And when that didn't help bulk up my stools, I started Metamucil. Ugh.

I think it can be mixed in any cold liquid.... I've never mixed it in a hot liquid but I think it would thicken too quickly.

I would start with a tiny dose, like 1/2 tsp to acclimate to it - some folks have talked about gas from it at first.

Or... how about the capsules? One, at first, to start?
