I will be on away for 3 days w/no fridge.  Will the probiotics not be effective being out of the fridge for that long?

A while back I needed a new box of Renew Life, 80 billion count to be specific and my health food store was in the midst of stocking shelves. They handed me a new box and said - here these just came in. The box was warm, not chilled at all and I started to hand it back (thinking I am not paying this kind of money for ruined probiotics). Turns out they told me Renew Life ships their probiotics at room temp. The clerk did recommend keeping my new bottle in the fridge but I always thought was interesting, they ship them at room temp. With this current heat wave in the US, you know those bottles must get very warm.

Also my college aged daughter needed a quick dose of probiotics because she was taking an antibiotic and I wanted to buy her a bottle before I left her college town (I knew she'd never run this errand herself). She told me where her local health food store was located but had never been inside (I was not surprised). As soon as I told the kind lady what product I needed she took me to shelf vitamins and supplements. I said oh no, I want a chilled one, she laughed and said there's a current study out there that none of these probiotics needed to be chilled. So I don't know what the real story is on this (oh BTW my daughter did not take the probiotics, handed them to me at the end of the quarter and said here mom, you take probiotics all the time, here's some more for you!).

I still keep mine chilled though. When we travel w/o electricity I keep mine in a tight bottle, inside a zip lock bag inside a cooler. You do not want one drop of water inside that bottle (that happened to me once and all the pills were ruined).

Thanks Marsky, I will pack what I need and a few extra. I kind of wondered about the way they are shipped too. I think I will ask next time I go there.

Interesting question.

I used to order VSL #3 from someplace in California (across the country from where I am), and it used to be shipped with dry ice pack in a padded aluminum foil packet, and it always came pretty warm temp. wise.
But I didn't know any better, and just put it in the frig, and used it without giving it much thought.

Recently I bought the VSL #3 locally and put it in the frig, and started using it - and I was amazed it had a totally different taste - I think the stuff I used to get from Calif. was inactive or through heat had deactivated, whereas the stuff from the local place was Active, and worked much much better.

Maybe you can call the manufacturer and find out what their recommendations are?

Dx with UC in Sept. 2010.Tried various Mesalamine enemas/suppos/pills with Prednisone for several rounds without any help.Diet consists of mostly only protein: protein shakes w/almond milk, Liquid Minerals& Vitamins,Maca powder,L-Glutamine 15g, D-Ribose 5g, chia seeds,5-Loxin.VSL#3,K2,VIt. D3 100,000 IU every 10 days.Canasa suppos. as maintenance. But Transdermal LDN is working!!
