Just wondering... is it ok to break up the prednisone dose throughout the day? Currently I'm taking 40mg first thing in the morning but I find that it causes my heart to feel flip-floppy and I'm wondering if it's just because the dose is too large to take for my height/weight. I'd be interested in maybe splitting it so that I take 20mg in the morning (around 8) and the remainder around lunch time. I'm not worried about insomnia, but I do want to know if it's safe to split prednisone like that.

I have split the dose before. I had one doctor who preferred I take 20 mg in the AM and 20 mg in the PM, however I don't like taking it this way and this is the only doctor I had who prescribed it that way. When I split the dose I find the side effects get a lot worse, my moon face, weight gain, ect were all worse when the dose was split instead of one AM dose.

I have since read that it is recommended in most cases if it can be tolerated to only take one daily dose to minimize adrenal atrophy or other long term health problems.

I would ask your doctor or call their nurse before switching it.

The only bad thing about splitting your dose is when you take pred at a later time in the day it usually interupts your night-time sleep and that's why it's generally recommended to take all of it at once first thing in the am.

good luck!
bee propolis caps 500mg one cap twice/day
omegas 369 caps one cap twice/day
probiotics 10 billion cfu once/day
vitamins C-calcium ascorbate (easy on the gut) and vitamin A each once/day
Prodiem fibre supplement one cap before bed
I've also altered my diet (no junky stuff at all, processed, fast-foods, refined sugars, ect) and exercise regularly.
I went from 30+ bloody BM's/day with lots of lower back pain to an average of 5/day no bleeding no back pain and completely formed stools, still have severe urgency issues.

It matters when you take it...the later in the day you take it the better chance you'll have issues sleeping at night.

I split dose Entocort (1 pill every 12 hours) to mitigate any possible side effects. Dr. Mck.Jefferies protocol is base don slip dosing Hydrocortisone and other steroids. Suppose to be as effective but less side effects.

Not to sure about Prednisone. Pred is a different animal and is not easy to change the dose. Thinking this is due to your adrenal gland shutting down and is not depended on Pred. Most adrenal is produced 1st thing in the morning. This may be the reason for an AM dose. My adrenal level is below normal in the AM so this may be why I don't have side effect from Pred.
Diagnosed July 2010

L-Glutamine / Folic Acid / MegaFood Blood Builder / Magnesium / VSL#3 / Engery Multiplex / MucoaHeal / Jini's Healing Implant Enema / Burt's Bees Res-Q Ointment (great stuff for rectal pain!)

We were told that as an anti-inflammatory it works better to split it up every 12 hours. The issue is the evening dose affects some people's sleeping.
