I went for my first 2 week blood test today. They told me Medicare won't pay. It's 137.50 for each test.  Called Medicare and then my doc.
edicare said according to what my put for reason for tssts, they won't cover it.  Doc hasn't gotten back to me yet.  Anyone else have this problem?  I can't afford to pay for all those blood tests at that price.
Got Colitis after I quit smoking years ago.
Remission seems to only be in spring summer months,. Flare all fall and winter.

1 Align, and 6 Asacol a day, can't retain the enemas. Doctor today said I can use 1/2 suppository(Canasa) 2 times a day. I also take Pepcid (prescription) for my stomach.
Now he wants me to try Imuran.
Started on Imuran(generic) Sept 30th 2011.

I haven't had the problem but I saw someone here recently who was having this problem. It may have been Beth75, I believe they did end up paying. I think it's still debated whether these tests are necessary. It's the kind of thing that is clearly necessary in my eyes but it's a newer technology and the insurance companies try to nickel and dime us in any way possible.

According to my GI, years ago, they didn't have these tests and they were able to monitor use pretty well with standard tests. Of course, in my case, if I had only had standard tests, I would have been in bad trouble down the line because the standard tests weren't showing 6mp as harmful to my liver while the 6mmp/tgp test was showing it harming my liver. I have never been able to go over 50mg for this reason. I was on 75mg briefly and it increased toxicity.

I just had a follow up test this week. Hopefully the levels are ok. This is probably my 5th or 6th one. I haven't had an ideal reaction to 6mp and these tests have been necessary for me. I think they should allow you to get them. You need to know if you're in the theraputic range or if the dose needs to be adjusted.
Co-moderator: Ulcerative Colitis
Diagnosed with Pancolitis, Laryngopharyngeal Reflux & Migraines. Battling Extreme Exhaustion.
Currently: Asacol (3200mg) + 6mp (50mg) + Pristiq (50mg) + Canasa (1g PM) + cerazette

Ok this really makes me nervous. The doc's office called and said if Medicare won't pay for that particular test, not to take it. Just take the other 2 and tell them to skip the third.
The one he is having me skip is called..Liver Hepatic Function Pan....

I asked if they are sure this isn't needed and he said ...don't worry, it will be fine. Just skip that one.

Does this sound right? Isn't that the test for my liver??????

The liver panel, for me, is the most important...I would think.

especially while on immuno meds.

What are the other two?

q
*Heather* I give suggestions, do with them what you will.

Maybe for now, do the two that are covered, and do the research as to the tests that should be done while on it.
You can have that test done at any point I would think.

Have you had a liver panel test any time in the recent past?

Not to be embarassed...but you can call the doc for a copy of the results of that set of tests for your records. It's helpful to know.

Joy, will they ok a bilirubin?  That is for liver function too.  When I was on 6MP my bilirubin was double the normal limit.  I hear you about Medicare.  What a pain in the butt.  I am glad I had the surgery last year before going on Medicare.    I used to have Personal Choice and they never questioned anything!  I don't know Medicare has working for them, but some of those people must be dummies.  Would you believe they ok'd my stoma powder and the deodorizer drops for my ostomy bags BUT...get a load of this....they did NOT ok my ostomy bags rolleyes .... OY what a hassle.
By the way, my Amylase and Lipase tests were way off the wall when I was hospitalized back in 08.  Scared the BeJesus out of my GI doctor and he took me off the 6MP for a short time.  The tests did go back to normal and I had to be closely monitored after that.  Hope I don't have any long term damage.  I know prednisone gave me osteoporosis.  UGH!
