I went to a dental clinic because I have a tooth that needs work. They said they couldnt help me due to
the risk involved with my meds.... I guess I could be happy they only charged my 25$ to do nothing-
Is there any reason why? Has anyone ever heard of this?

Carlie, what do they need to do? I had a lot of cavities refilled while tapering off of prednisone. My dentist didn't say anything. I was on under 10mg of prednisone.

I've had lots of dental work this year but I don't think its been when I've been on steroids. Seems strange to me though.
Diagnosed April 2009

Currently taking Lialda 2 tabs in am, Protonix 40mg every day, Singulair, Zyrtec, Probiotics, and Rowasa enema once a week.

I am a very busy dentist and of course have UC.  What meds are you specfically on?  I will tell what any good dentist would be thinking.

Im on 40mg steroids orally, 100mg rectally (enema) canasa suppository every other day. 2, 400 mg asacol 4x day
just started zoloft (yesterday)...

I need the tooth pulled or a root canal. He didnt even give me anything for pain. I went to the pharmacy and got
clove oil drops and temporary filling and fixed it myself... I know it wont last long, but maybe long enough to get down lower on my taper and find another dentist or just not say anything about meds to the next dentist.

You are not taking anything too personally at all.  I don't what that particular dentist was thinking.  It certainly has nothing to do with your medications.  In fact we will often put people on 40 mg of prednisone when they have thier teeth extracted to lessen the swelling following the procedure.  Canasa has nothing to do with it.  In the end I would definitely find another dentist.  No hesitation on calling this one.

Yes, find another dentist. This dentist may be either old school or lazy. I have had extractions while on 6mp and have had no issues from the med or from the oral surgeon. I have been on a whole different slew of medications over the years and never had an issue with the dentist(s) and meds.

Thank you very much- I will find one on monday. I wont even mention my meds. What chaps my hide is I dont have dental insurance so it would have been cash pay/full price... I guess they didnt need my money.

With root canal (endodontist) you will need to take an antibiotic. Just to reassure you, I took Zithromax recently during oral surgery-- on the recommendation of several UCers posting here who said it is the easiest antibiotic on the gut. They were right! Don't delay pursuing dental treatment elsewhere-- if you have an infected tooth it can blow your face out with swelling that becomes painful. Take care & let us know how you're doing. / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

My only other input is that it's not true that you will 100% need an antibiotic.  It's true that 70-80% of the time one will get put on one but it's rare that one will HAVE to have one at all.  The best treatment is to have the root canal.  I often do not put patients on abs if I can avoid it because the best treatment in the end is to directly drain and clean the source of the infection, hence the root canal procedure itself.  If you do need to go on one Z pack works nicely on the gut.  You can also shorten the duration, instead of 10 or 7 days one can usually get away with 5 days.  I also highly recommend a probiotic while you on the antibioitic anyways.
