Interesting study on the role of diet and IBD, specifically SCD together with pre- and probiotics.

"The Anti-Inflammatory Diet for IBD (IBD-AID), which is derived and augmented from The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), is a nutritional regimen that restricts the intake of complex carbohydrates such as refined sugar, gluten-based grains, and certain starches from the diet. These carbohydrates are thought to provide a substrate for pro-inflammatory bacteria. The second component of the diet involves the ingestion of pre- and probiotics to help restore an anti inflammatory environment."

"This case series indicates the potential for the IBD-AID to be used as an adjunctive or alternative therapy for the treatment of IBD. Notably, 9 out of 11 patients were able to be managed without anti-TNF therapy, and 100% of the patients had their symptoms reduced. To make clear recommendations for its use in clinical practice, randomized trials are needed alongside strategies to improve acceptability and compliance with the IBD-AID."

You're welcome.

Happy New Year. How have you been doing?

I agree, probiotics together with diet, slippery elm powder and a bunch of other supplements have made a huge difference to me. No, I've never tried pre-biotics because I'm in remission and am doing well, but will look into it.

BTW, when you click on the link for the article, and then click on the title itself in the article, it should bring you to a pdf file where it shows the diet and pre and pro biotics they were put on. It worked once for me, and now I keep getting error messages??

Hi-
After seeing the list of pre-biotic foods in the study, I googled "pre-biotic food list" and realized that I am able to tolerate many and already include several in my diet such as legumes, garlic, oats and asparagus (my favorite).
One website containing a list is Livestrong.com. Plan to add artichokes, barley, etc.

I make a big pot of chicken-broth-based soup every week, adding lots of vegetables, usually including onions, celery, carrots and sweet potatoes (cancer fighters). Usually have a bowl every day. I'm happy to see barley on the list because I'm always tempted to add white rice or small pasta.
Started making this soup after having a problem with hemorrhoids. It made a big difference.

Thanks for posting the article, InSoFla
Great to see that the doctors here at UMass are working on this.

These are the probiotic and prebiotic foods they used in the study:
Probiotic Foods
Aged cheeses
Dark chocolate
Fermented cabbage
Kefir
Miso soup
Microalgae
Pickles
Yogurt (active)

Prebiotic Foods
Artichokes
Asparagus
Bananas
Chicory root
Garlic
Honey
Leeks
Oats
Onions
And here's more info on prebiotics:

Prebiotics

A prebiotic is a special type of food fiber that is not digested by the body but rather is used by certain colon bacteria as a food source. Measurable beneficial changes may then occur within the colon itself and for the body as well. By increasing the acidity in the colon by the use of prebiotics, the bacteria that make hydrogen sulfide will not grow. As noted, there is new evidence that this gas is particularly damaging to the colon of ulcerative colitis patients, and may even play a role in causing Ulcerative Colitis.

Great to see that dark chocolate (my anti-depressant) is listed. Willing to give up almost anything but that.

I am a big chocoholic, so I feel your need for chocolate, lol!
I've come upon an 81% raw cacao bar filled with caramel, which is absolutely divine. They are very expensive, so I only have 1/4 of a bar each day as a treat.
Oh, and what a treat!! Here's the link to them, they're called Mama filled bars. I'm trying to find them more cheaply elsewhere, without any luck ;(

InSoFla- I am doing OK. I am now on my 3rd month of being on crutches after surgery and it is driving me crazy, especially since I am supposed to walk as little as possible to avoid collapse of the other knee that will get the same surgery after this one heals. So, I am bored and waiting for the day I can walk again. It is amazing how much we take for granted until it is taken away!

Thanks for all the good information, as usual. I love reading your posts! They are always so informative with the natural alternatives! It is a lifesaver for me!

Happy New Year!!!

Thanks so much. Happy New Year to you too.
I'm sorry your recovery is so frustrating. Yes, we do take so much for granted.
I remember many years back, when I was bed-ridden and not allowed even to get out of bed  to take a shower.... that's when I realized oh the little things we take for granted. I can tell you that since then, I have a new appreciation of being able to take hot showers, lol.

To help in your recovery, I hope you are monitoring your vitamin d3 and b12 levels, and ensuring adequate intake of calcium, zinc, magnesium?

Please stay in touch. :-)
