Well overall I am doing well. Just seems that once a year I start to flare and have to get a 12 day Prednisone dose. Man that stuff makes me crazy. My sleep pattern is an absolute disaster, I was almost hearing voices last night. At one point I was looking through my eyes into the backs of my eyelids, as if it was a movie I was watching. It took me 2 doses of Nyquil to get 3 hours sleep. Then I wake up all sweaty...anyone else have this crazy stuff happen with pred? Guess I'll just sleep when the opportunity presents itself...dB

Yes...many people get alot of cleaning done in the middle of the night due to not being able to sleep. I would also get crazy hot in the middle of the night...middle of the day you name it. Made my hubby go out and get me a slurpee one day because I was burning up with sweat pouring down me. I hope I never have to take it again.

Just curious if you use rectal meds? I see better results with that instead of pred. Last time on pred it never got me back in remission while using the enemas nightly did.

And Deacon Blues, one of the more unusual and dangerous side effects of pred is psychosis. So if you are really feeling crazy, please tell your DR. It may be time to eliminate pred from your toolbox.

I would try rectals in the future before you resort to pred...aside from feeling not yourself it does do lasting damage if your on it awhile. Rectal meds are just soooo much better and safe. Good luck!

When I was on pred. years ago for something else, I went back and asked him for something because I was going crazy ( was driving over the yellow line playing chicken with the oncoming cars, quite unlike me ) and he gave me Paxil. I think that's like Valium.

Do you need a prescription for rectal meds or are there any over-the -counter available?

I understand what you're going through. How much of a dose are you taking? And you took Nyquil with prednisone? Let alone Nyquil? Most disgusting otc drug ever.

I'm at 10mg (which keeps me absolutely perfect and level with my UC) but I'm still able to get 7 hours of sleep, just when I wake up for that first bathroom trip in the morning its all over from there. :(

Lotion-yes you need a script for rectal meds. Rowasa enemas are great!

It is always amazing to me how much alike and yet so different we all are. I only wish prednisone would amp me up as it does many people. Instead, I can easily doze off. I was recently prescribed 60 mg to stop a debilitating flare. I am Type 2 diabetic and many Type 2s have elevated blood sugar when taking prednisone. I do not. Fasting blood sugar this morning was 105. The flaring has significantly diminished and I can function once again. I hesitate to introduce this thought, but I am finding a direct link between my emotional well-being and my physical well-being. There is a highly personal event taking place in my life which requires interaction with a certain individual. Every time I am supposed to meet that individual I start flaring. It's as though my sub-concious takes over and says, "Hey. You're much too sick to meet. You can't get two feet away from the bathroom. You have to cancel!" and I'm off the hook. I have successfully used bio-feedback or self talk with other physical issues but never really looked at it in conjunction with my uc. I know this is controversial, but am only sharing what happens to and with me.
I was also prescribed Azathioprine - 80 mg a day - in place of Humira or Remicade. Anyone have experience with that drug?

Hope I haven't offended or taken too much time.

I like all the replies!! I don't know why I am averse to the Rowasa enemas, I have some in the house. I need to get them going as well. Doing pretty well and have 4-5 days of pred left, still diarrhea though...That doesn't bother me, the abdominal pain that I had was worse! I have never had a normal BM since I was Dx'd in Dec of '99...With the pred tapering the "crazies" have taken their leave :-)

I'm on prednisone and it gives me a soapy taste in my mouth and insomnia too, night sweats, and for some reason no appetite. Been having issues with my Dr. Was diagnosed with moderate UC in 1999. In 2006 went into remission symptom free and stopped taking meds due to cost. Contolled symptoms with low stress, and diet. Omega-3 and low carb really helped. But this year stress factor went throught the roof! Stated eating bad! Started bleeding with bowel movements. Started predisone in Dec., had colonoscopy. lower portion of colon inflammed. Dr put me back up to full dose and am tapering again. Wants to start Remicaid. Not sure how I feel about that. Right now am dealing with the inability to go. Not having usual UC symptoms. Just been dealing with bouts of not going for 4-5 days, some days it's formed and looks normal, others it looks like slug. Every day is different. Just wondering whats going on! Dealing mostly with rectal pain and hemroids. Taking steriod enema and litocain. Not sure if I'm not going cause I'm not eating enough. Still running lowgrade fever on and off. That's my story. Sorry so long but would love to get advice. oh I've added probiotics, omega-3, vit D3 too.

I know all the "experts" say stress doesn't cause UC. I beg to differ. I am currently looking for a mental health counselor to help me work out some issues. I certainly want to be as healthy as possible. My son voluntarily researched probiotics for me. There is one called Benebiotics that tops the list. Align, the one my gastro guy advised me to take, is at the bottom of the list. VSL 3 is also highly rated. It requires refrigeration. 60 tablets at the Rite Aid near me cost $67 + tax. The Benebiotics were half the price with no refrigeration.
Hope you start getting some relief soon.

prednisone totally sucks. i hope you get some sleep when it's out of your system. i was on it for 3.5 months. i felt like a different person. i was constantly on edge like something was gonna happen to me. sleep was non existant but i might get one hour here and one hour there. i ended up taking a lot of baths at 2 am because there was nothing else to do. i would wake up SOAKED in sweat so the baths helped a little. the weirdest thing i did was at like 4 am, i went in my room and tore everything off my walsl. i rearranged my furtniture, too. i look back on it and i'm kind of sad because i ripped up a lot of pictures and posters ( i don't know why i did this). so now my walls don't have much on them anymore. i'm never gonna take it again though. it didn't do one thing of good for my illness.
