I used vsl #3 for about a year.  I never noticed any difference, the whole time using it I had an off and on minor flareup.  anyway, I ran out 2 months ago and did not refill my prescription.  I did not get any worse, in fact, i may even have had a slight improvement.  Anyway, its quite expensive (my copay is $120 for 3 months worth) and since i dont think its made a huge difference, its just too expensive to keep using.  But I feel like I should take a probiotic, its got to be doing something, right?

Wanted to know if anyone here takes a probiotic that seems to help that will cost less than $40 a month...

I did see florastor, sach. boulardi and renewlife rec. in other threads.  just wondering what to try next, thanks all!!!

All I have taken is just Acidolphilus. Seems to help me with the gas and bloating feeling as long as I take it in the evening. I did buy some Phillips colon health to use because I am getting some oral surgery done and wanted to try something a little stronger so as to hopefully avoid a flare.

Currently taking Lialda 2 tabs in am, Protonix 40mg every day, Allegra, Zyrtec, Probiotics, Vitamin D3, Melatonin and Rowasa enema once a week.

Currently in Remission since June 2011. I seem to flare yearly Dec/Jan time frame. Hoping this winter to be different since I'm not working.

I have tried so many and none helped my condition. I think it's trial and error. I haven't been taking any for quite some time, I eat yogurt instead. I am happy to be saving some money.

stereo:

vsl# 3 DOUBLE STRENGTH (or DS) is the only rx probiotic.  You can check with your health insurance to see if it is in their formulary.  if so, your dr will need to write you a prescription.  they are powder packets.

they seem to help alot of people, and its definitely worth trying.

do give Florastor a try -- it's slightly different from the others and seems to have had an immediate impact on me. Other probiotics are bacteria-based; this one is yeast-based.

I haven't tried Jarrow's but it seems like it should be fine. The two companies measure the amount of probiotic using different scales so it's hard to say which one would be more effective, but Florastor is so effective that I'm considering going to a half dose, so the Jarrow's should be fine even if it has less of the S. Boulardii.

Custom Priobiotic's six strain powdered blend and Natren's Healthy Trinity capsules are two that have worked well for me. Unfortunately, in my experience, the ones that work are the ones that are expensive. More affordable brands seemed to have no effect on me.

FYI:
Saw this at Florastor review:

"Florastor has titanium dioxide which has been found to cause cancer when inhaled by rats. Titanium nanoparticles have also been found to cause genetic damage in mice."

Maybe the Jarrow product is the better choice.

I ordered Jarrow S. Boulardii and Benebiotic on Amazon today.
