I am on 40mg of Pred and tapering is going to be every 5mg every 3 weeks. This is making me terribly hungry. I did a search and found a couple of thread on the topic. They mention following stuff -
- Baby carrots
- Baked potatoes
- Sweet potatoes
- Pretzels
- Crackers
- Pasta salad
- Chicken
- Peanut butter with bread
etc.

I used to counter my hunger in the past with popcorn. Now that I am on 40mg for almost more than a week and still there is a little blood in stools, my GI asked me to stay away from fibery stuff, including popcorn. So popcorn, carrots are out. Potatoes and pasta are starch. I don't want to add up fat with water. Crackers and Pretzels, processed food. DW is watching like a hawk if I am eating any processed food. Chicken - I am vegetarian. Peanut butter, its my breakfast.

So folks, please suggest me what do I eat that will still make me feel full but won't add too much of calories. I am going NUTS with this hunger. I have already added 25lbs over the last year due to Pred and this course is going to be longer. I really need some good plan to control weight this time, already got a good moonface and body odor is getting bad..
Diagnosed March 2007 with left sided UC at the age of 30.
Currently on,
Colazal 9 daily, Imuran, 200mg daily, Vit. B12, 1mg, Multivitamin, 1 tablet daily, Fish oil 2400mg daily, Vit D 2000 IU daily, Butterbur 150mg daily.

Verapamil 240mg for migraine, Migraine episode now at least twice a month,
Ibuprofen 400mg is the only solution (but leads to bleeding). Looking for alternatives.

Popcorn is the worst food you can have with IBS.UC. Ect because it is sharp, grainy and doesn't digest very well it can scratch your bowel leaving you with excruciating pain, i know, i used to have popcorn all the time and i felt like i was about to die one day when i had it. Also things to keep away from are, skins of potato, nuts, sweetcorn, brown rice, brown bread, seeds pretty much all the things you think are good for you stay away from.
Eggs are good, rice cereals, fish, white fluffy rice, soups.
Hope this helps.

Few suggestions:

omelettes with vegs
Ricotta cheese with a tint of maple syrup and pecans! Its like a cheesecake
oven baked sweet potatoes (cut in half, salted)
dried fuits like dates or abricots
Soups
Hummous
Baba ganoujh
Home made popsicle with fruit juice (when you are craving that gives you something to keep busy for a while and its refreshing)
Lots of tea (calms a bit)
You can make as well a sticky thai rice dessert with coconut milk and topped it with fresh mangos (http://thaifood.about.com/od/thaidesserts/r/mangoricepuddin.htm)
How about soay snacks too? like roasted soya beans?

hope it helps

What did I eat while on pred-EVERYTHING!

I like all the above suggestions. I'm lucky that I eat popcorn and nuts and neither one bothers me.

For something sweet that would also fill you up for a little bit (I am doing this as I am dieting now) is a cup of hot chocolate...if you do like chocolate that is. It doesn't kill you with the calories. I know that I would never stop with one bite or little piece of chocolate and this satisfies my craving. :)

Good luck...I hate pred.

Sheri, I cam in to post "Everything!" as well! Man oh man does prednisone give me an appetite!

One of the things that I like best about being able to work out again is that chocolate milk is considered to be one of the best post-workout nutrition choices (for people who can handle lactose and chocolate), so I get a treat while I also do something good for my body :-)

You poor thing. When I was on prednisone, I wanted to eat everything and I DID. I gained a lot too, I was miserable. I think the best thing to eat, if you can tolerate it is probably nuts. Almonds are great and good for you. Avocados are good too. I make a salad with just avocados, salt, pepper and some lemon. Not much of a salad but it's good and healthy. How about fruit, bananas, apples, mangoes? Nothing stopped my weight gain except getting off prednisone so don't beat yourself up. You will get back on track when you're off the evil prednisone.

Eggplant parm is a good veggie meal but it's a pain to prepare.

I take prednisone more for asthma but it seems to help my GI problems.

Doesn't prednisone cause brain damage? has anyone noticed foginess or memory problems after prednisone?

Thank you folks. Honestly, I don't want to be a part of 'everything' bandwagon. I did that last week and while it does make me feel sick, the brain keeps telling me 'eat more, eat more, you are starving'.

I liked bananagirl's idea. Protein shakes, any recommendations?

@astham13,
I am not aware of Pred causing brain damage but it can lead to a variety of other issues, arthritis, Pred induced diabetes and lot others. Personally, I have not noticed any foginess or memory issues.
