Hi there :)

I have started taking turmeric as one of my GIs (one who i consulted for a second opinion) told me it was a good alternative treatment to take to prevent a flare-up. And to be honest i have been in remission ever since...until i stopped it early january 2012 and bam i flared late january! now im back on it and i don't want to stop it...i have been in remission since the beginning of this month.

Now the only issue i have with turmeric is that i suspect it is making me lose weight. i dropped from 47kg to 45kg since i started it. Im 157cm tall btw. i have a little 1 yr old who i have to look (run after) and it could also be that im just not eating enough calorie-rich foods (it ain't easy with gluten free restrictions). But i do eat 3 meals a day and have snack before bed.

I think it's the turmeric but can't be sure...it's just that i don't want to keep losing weight.

My question is: has any of you taken turmeric and did you experience any changes to your weight as a result?

iam taking 2x 500mg curcuminoids (the active components in turmeric) per day.

I noticed this thread went to the second page; so no one here is taking turmeric?

I don't think I've ever heard of weight loss being a side effect of tumeric. How do you take it? Is it curcumin or tumeric? I don't think either would cause weight loss but then again I'm not 100% that it couldn't. If you are using tumeric the spice and not curcumin the supplement, you could try drinking in full fat milk (if you can tolerate it), or in coconut milk, or cook it in butter and then add it to your food. It's more bioavailable when consumed with a fat and would add healthy fat to your diet as well?

I take turmeric all of the time. Its great on fish, vegetables, chicken. Organic is best! Its a super herb that has alot of anti-cancer properties.... I don't think that it has the potential to make you lose weight... If you've been in a flare, that is why you're losing weight. Take it easy on the Benefiber, too much fiber when you're in a flare makes things worse... Thats how I accelerated my first ever flare.

I dont understand why you're avoiding fish like salmon, Wild Alaskan has some of the best anti-inflammatory ratings around, have you checked out any of InSoFla's topics on Lobster/glucosamine helping to treat some issues? If you're a nutritionist surely you know some of this, but focusing on an anti-inflammatory diet would be best, gluten free is a good start. If you're willing to give it a try, the SCD may help as well.

Hi Stereofidelic and Killcolitis...thaks for the replies..the reason i avoid salmon is because im allergic to it! Well sometimes i eat it and nothing happens and other times i run to the loo (in remission when this happens) and i know its the salmon and not something else bc i dont eat anything with it except white rice and some salad (which i eat every day without probs). So now i still eat fish 2-3 times a week like trout, barramundi and other oily fish. I have tried fish oil in the past and made me semi-flare which confirms that im allergic/ intolerant to some types of fish; salmon one of them.
The turmeric i take is in concentrated capsule form in order for it to have the anti inflammatory effect. I am now taking 500mg or curcumin ( ordinary turmeric powder contains 5% curcumin) and curcumin is the anti inflam substance in turmeric.
Im assuming from Stereofidelic reply that your only use turmeric as a spice on food? In which case it means you are only getting a very small amount of curcumin.

Blame it on the 1 year old!!!!!

Most of my friends who had babies actually were skinnier after childbirth. Main reasons are always busy and forgetting about your needs and they did breastfeeding which is supposed to make you burn calories like hell!

However since I need to lose a bit of weight I will try tumeric!! Even for its placebo effect!

I see you are a nutritionist!  I saw a nutritionist when I suffered with UP.  She tried to help, but guess I was a hopeless case cry .  Tumeric did nothing for me, neither did all the probiotics, meds, chiropractic or SCD....oh well.

I only took turmeric for a short period because it didn't seem to be doing anything for me.

However I do just have a hard time keeping weight on with this disease.

I also have 2 kids, who I breastfed for years. Some people lose weight while nursing and, surprisingly, a lot of women will lose weight when baby weans.

Sounds like the turmeric is benefitting you, so I wouldn't quit taking it. Maybe try to get in some more calories?
