It's 8am and I've not been able to get an ounce of shut-eye...

I've tried taking an antihistamine,
Listening to calming music,
Reading...
etc

I'm currently on 40mg prednisone for a nasty rash under my ostomy bag... I got rid of the UC but not the prednisone! Blargh.

I need sleep so I can get surgery #2 within the month, but I find it impossible while on this stuff! I always take the pred right after waking.

Why can't I sleep?

Theresa,

I'm so sorry you've not been able to get any sleep.

How about trying the amino acid GABA?

Make sure you look into it, and any contra-indications it may have.

You can try splitting your dose so that you aren't taking all 40 mg at night. You can also ask your doc for a sleep aid.

I took ambiean fairly often or I wouldn't have gotten any sleep at all. Sometimes ambien didn't even help me get rest but withouot it, I don't think I would have slept the entire time I was on pred.

I took trazodone when I was on prednisone. It helped me to sleep normally without any side-effects. Melatonin helps some people as well (not me).
Left-sided UC diagnosed October 2009.

Current meds: Imuran, Remicade, Canasa, Wellbutrin, flax/fish oil, multivitamin

Failed meds: Asacol, Rowasa

Try calming teas, like loose leaf chamomile, not the store bought junk, you need the full effect. Works for me. I wouldn't physically try to get yourself to sleep though, there is a reason you're body is awake and trying to tell you something.

I would be too frightened I might mess the bed if I took sleeping pills whilst flaring. Which I am at the moment. So I just put up with pred-induced insomnia and my nightly ups and down to the loo. No pearls of wisdom from here, clearly! Hope you feel better soon (and sleep better, too).

If it's just for a short time, I'd go with Valium (which I have experience with) or whatever your doctor might prescribe for you. Stuff like that's not for the long haul, as it's fun stuff and fun stuff leads to problems. I'm of the opinion it's better to soil one's self than suffer prolonged sleep deprivation. God luck and God bless you!
