I been on prednisone for 3 weeks now, 20mg twice daily with almost no improvement.. As of today I am starting prednisone 20mg THREE times daily to equal 60mg per day.. What should I expect as far as progress or side effects?

If you are having side effects from the pred you can expect them to get worse. Talk to your DR about timing the meds - you might do better if you take all or most of it in the morning (if it's making you have insomnia). Hopefully this will get you into remission more quickly and you can taper off.

I've been on Pred for 3 weeks now at 40mg a day. The only side effects I've noticed is 1.) insomnia and 2.) slightly decreased blood pressure (still within the range of normal but at the edge of normal). I typically wake up 3-4 times a night from a sound sleep. If you've had that side effect yourself, then I would anticipate you waking up more often. Due to the low blood pressure, my heart seems to beat a little faster even when I am at rest (my GI said that is nothing to worry about). Both side effects will go away as soon as I am ready to taper to lower dosages.

I hope the increased dosage works well for you. I hadn't heard of oral dosages quite that high before. I know higher dosages can be given intravenously though...

I think you'll be ok on 60mg for a short period. It's a high dose, but if you can get symptoms under control quickly and start to taper you should be fine.

It's not a dose you want to be on for a long time, as your GI would probably agree. The long term effects can be very harmful.

I take 50mg of prednisone all in the morning. I'm not sure if everyone does this, but I think it helps me sleep a little better if I don't take prednisone in the evening. Makes me really jittery.

Hope you get your symptoms under control soon, and can get off the dreaded prednisone.

I was on a dose of pred varying between 40 and 60 mg/day for almost 6 weeks. It did nothing to help my UC symptoms. I have had trouble sleeping, blurred vision, lower blood pressure, higher heart rate, weird heart rhythms/beat skipping, some water weight gain and random aches in pains in my joints. I just started my slow taper 4 days ago and hope these side effects don't get any worse. Good luck with your treatment, hope it works for you!
DX:6/12 Ulcerative Proctitis,got into/kept remission w/1 Canasa nightly
Current BAD Flare began late 11/12

Taken off Canasa, put on Pred 40 mg/day,12 days later Pred upped to 60mg/day, now back to 40. Currently tapering: 35 mg/day
First Remicade infusion 1/15/13
Rowasa(generic) sometimes, hard to retain due to frequency/urgency .

I was on 40 MG or pred for 12 weeks and did nothing (second time I had been on it) then dr put me on enemas and they put me into remission... did you get scoped? Where is the inflammation?

side effects that I had, tiredness, bloated, stretch marks, weight gain, moodiness, moon face, extra hair growth on my head, very hot, acne (try St. Ives apricot scrub or proactive) and a general feeling of UGH! Probably a few more things I'm hoping to forget!!!

I'm so sorry and hope it helps, it took 3 months for the pred to put me into remission the first time I was on it. I did alt days of 60/40.

Best of luck!

Insomnia and insanity. Just kidding, well not about the insomnia part. I was seriously running around like a lunatic when I was on a high dose of pred. I gained a lot of weight even though I never slept and I was always running around. I ate a ton too. Try to eat only what you normally eat. I couldn't stop eating and I never slept. I was also very on edge. I had to take an antidepressant when coming off the substance because I was so unstable.

Does anyone have a recommended time of how I should split these dosages up as far as the prednisone? Taking three a day is it ok to take two in the morning and then the third mid day?

I would say it depends on how much it affects your sleep. The mor it affects your sleep the earlier you sould take the doses. I think two in the am and one miday would be fine if your doctor instructed you to split them up.

I'm more concerned about convenience and effectiveness.. I don't sleep at night right now due to urgencies anyways.. It says take one by mouth three times daily, but right now im taking about a total of 10 pills a day which gets to be a bit much so if I could get away with combing two preds in the morning and still achieve the same results then it'd be easier for me to time everything out right as far as pill consumption throughout the day

I take all my prednisone at once. I was not on 60 mg but I was on 40mg. Someone else posted they were on 60 mg and took it all at once. My leaflet that came with my Rx said to take it as one dose before 9am.

Interesting.. Idk if I should just follow the (once by mouth three times daily) or not.. It's an inconvenience.. Idk if me being 22 years old has to do with them wanting me to seperate dosages

I don't think age effects when you should take. My husband is a pharmacy tech. He says taking 60 mg at once won't hurt you. The doctor may have had some reason he wanted you to split it up though. Can you call the doctor and get permission to change the dosing schedule?

I've heard that some docs split up the Pred doses to multiple times per day in order to make it easier on one's adrenal system. I guess the pred spikes your levels when it is taken all at once.

Probably 80% or more of doctors suggest taking all of your pred all at once in the morning. I have never seen any proof anywhere that there are any advantages to splitting up the dosage. Without pred your body makes approximately 10mgs or cortisol per day. Any dosage of pred over that per day shuts down your adrenal system so that it no longer makes it's own cortisol. So, when you have taken a dose greater than 10mgs in the AM your adrenal gland is shut down for the day anyway so taking the med one or two more times afterward probably has no benefit. I could see maybe if your daily dosage is around 10mgs or less it might be of benefit to split it up. Maybe this is the reason why your doctor prescribes it this way, so that when you do taper to lower doses you will be used to splitting it up. In answer to your question though, I see nothing wrong with taking it the way you suggested.
Asacol 400mgs 2 pillsX3; VSL#3 112.5mgs 1 pillX3; Vitamin D3 5000 ius 1 pillX2; B6 1/day; Bentyl & Swanson DAO with meals; Slippery Elm at bedtime

Discontinued: Robinul; Natural - peppermint oil, Inflaguard (Boswellia), Pepto Bismol, Omega 3 fish oil, Imodium, Beano, Zymactive, Renew Life Probiotic 80 billion, Florastor, DGL, Monolaurin

6 weeks ago I started 40mg prez for a week, tapered to 30mg for a week, and then 20 mg for a week. When that had only minimal effects. Doc put me on 20mg a day until I started 6MP. Now he has me on half a pill, 10 mgs with Aprisio and 6MP.

For me, the Predz make me extremely miserable and very moody. I told my Doc that it really didnt help (actually made me bleed a lot worse than just aprisio) and that I didnt really want it anymore and he said "I dont blame you". and dropped me to 10mgs until the 6MP starts kicking in.

The most I ever tool was 40mg/daily and I was an insomniac, at first I felt like I took cocaine or something! Then I started to get angry and have steroid rage which is very typical with Predisone. Also I gained weight and my face got very puffy. I also got the shakes all the time. This is a terrible drug, but saves lives. Good luck!
