My doctor's office just called and told me they are discontinuing manufacturing Asacol. There is a new medicine called Delzicol. I was told it's the same medicine as Asacol but it's in a capsule. So I asked about the enteric coating and delivery mechanism but they didn't know. Does anyone have info on this? I am freaking out. :(

If Asacol is going generic then you will be able to get the same med at a lower price. No need to freak out.

I think you are panicking for no reason. One company makes Asacol and it's patent runs out the middle of this year. It is possible that the company making Asacol now will discontinue making it but generics can be made by any company and I'm sure they will be. Come the middle of this year there will probably be two or three different companies making generic Asacol. I'm not worried. Worst case scenario is they quit making Asacol now to drain down their supplies before generics are made and MAYBE pharmacies could possibly run out before the generic is available.
Asacol 400mgs 2 pillsX3; VSL#3 112.5mgs 1 pillX2; Prescrip Assist Probiotic 1 pill X 2;Vitamin D3 5000 ius 1 pillX2;Bentyl;DAO;Folic acid

Discontinued: Robinul; Natural - peppermint oil, Inflaguard (Boswellia), Pepto Bismol, Omega 3 fish oil, Imodium, Beano, Lactaid;Zymactive, Renew Life Probiotic 80 billion, Florastor, DGL, Monolaurin, slippery elm;black cherry concentrate

There will be generics. Because any company will be able to make it once the patent runs out. You can't "discontinue" production of a generic drug because anyone can start producing it whenever they feel like it. And as there's demand for it, many companies will begin producing it. The inventor of the drug may however discontinue their own production of it because it is no longer worthwhile for them to compete with generics. But that doesn't mean the drug is going away.
DX: Pancolitis 12/17/2012
Prescribed Prednisone 40mg and Asacol HD 4800mg
Currently symptom free, start tapering off Prednisone 1/24/2013. As of yet no Pred side-effects.
Also on SCD

Ok well that would be good. I didnt know how that worked since the company who makes Asacol is now making a new med thats almost the same as Asacol except it is in a capsule.

They're doing that so they can hold onto a patent on something.

I never used Asacol tablet so don't know but this new form is just same drug in new form. Its delayed release capsule so the mesalamine granules are coated with different coatings to release on regular interval.

If the patent is running out, I am pretty sure that cheaper generics will be available.

+1 to Lacaille.
Diagnosed March 2007 with left sided UC.
Currently on daily dose of,
Colazal 9 caps, Imuran, 200mg, Vit. B12, 1mg, Multivitamin, 1 tablet, Fish oil 2400mg , Vit D 2000 IU, Benebiotics 2caps

Verapamil 320mg, Nortryptyline 20mg for migraine, Migraine episode now at least 4X a month,
Nabumetone 750mg as an abortive, so far so good with GI side effects.

If the patent expires, the patent expires. Any drug manufacturer can make it. There is already a generic asacol in Canada that they should be able to sell here.

Asacol never worked for me anyway so I've been paying out of pocket for Salofalk tabs from Canada. 8l00dy expensive! The asacol tabs just pass through a lot of the time undisolved
DX Pancolitis 2003. Subsequent flares limited to left side
Flare every 2-3 years.
Salofalk 12 tabs daily, Rowasa SF 2x daily
Probiotics: None Fiber: Psyllium, Super Seed.
Allergic to Imuran

Finishing up a round of Pred :-( Currently down to 2.5 mg
Enjoying an awesome remission so far, eating spinach every day seems to be helping a lot! Only symptom is too much farty gas... Wife not amused.

Delzicol has the same amount of Mesalamine as Asacol, no? Maybe less than Asacol HD, but can't you take 4 tabs at 400 mg instead of 2 at 800 mg?

I guess what I'm asking is: why does it matter how the drug is absorbed if it's the same drug?

Because sometimes the drug doesnt work the same. See threads on generic versus brand name colazal for example. and asacol is 400 mg tablets FYI.

Asacol is 400 mg but Asacol HD is 800 mg.

I'm just trying to make sure it's possible to get the same amount of Mesalamine even if it's from a different medication. I'm also starting to think that I may need to try Colazal.

No, No NO! I don't want to start on a new drug. This is ridiculous. I need to get off of this, total BS that they may be compromising people's health and symptoms over halting the manufacture process and pointing to a new drug in its place.

I know, same here. I do not want to switch because Asacol worked well for me. I wish we had more info. on the patent deal and if there will be a generic coming out around July. If that is the case, then we will only be without Asacol foe a couple months.

Why isn't there any literature on this anywhere? You'd think this would be news worth reporting for Warner-Chilcott stockholders at the very least. Are they also discontinuing Asacol HD? There is very little actual concrete information in this thread and a ton of fear.

I'm seeing my GI tomorrow and will ask.

There are articles about Delzicol being fda approved if you Google Delzicol but other than that I found nothing. They probably dont want to advertise that they are discontinuing a drug that thousands depend on every day just so they can make more money.

...or maybe they're not discontinuing a drug that thousands depend upon?

also: how do you know that Delzicol won't work like Asacol did? it is being marketed as if it will, at the very least.

My GIs office is the one who called and told me. It is concrete information. They learned of it from my mail order pharmacy, Caremark. And I called my old GI to get more information and they also confirmed.
