My son is tapering Prednisone, down to 20mg from 40mg. He is going to have Fecal Transplant done on July 16, so the GI suggested that he start Uceris, just to make sure the inflammation is kept down. I was just curious if anyone else has used the combination together? Even though the GI said its ok to take them, I'm looking for personal experience from people who have used them.

Yes it was awesome. Within 2 or 3 weeks my bleeding subsided. 60 mg pred couldn't do that.

Wow...That's fantastic. I've heard that Uceris can only be taken for 8 weeks, is that true?

My flare hasn't yet come under control and my doctor had me go back on Uceris at the same time as I'm on prednisone -- so, not even tapering pred, just taking both drugs at the dosages that should cause remission. I really dislike the side effects that I get on Uceris (I'm one of a tiny minority who get side effects) and I can't see that it's helping, either, so I probably won't be taking it much longer.
dx 4/09 (1 week before breast cancer dx) with mild to moderate UC through mid-transverse colon
4.8 g Lialda; cortisone enemas nightly
RenewLife Ultimate Flora 80 bln; L-Glutamine; Florastor
Gluten free since 8/12 + in remission since 9/12
5/8/13 ate gluten & began flare
5/22 began Uceris; 6/4 switched to 40 mg prednisone; 6/9 bumped up to 60 mg

So..... 40mg to 20 mg. That's a huge jump! Pred should be tapered slower usually. How long has he been taking it for?

Madcat: He has been tapering at a dose of 5mg per week over a period of 6 weeks. He started at 40 and I've slowly tapered by 5mg and we are now at 20mg.

From my knowledge and what my GI told me: Yes.

I didn't taper it either.

I was taking it at the same time as I took low doses of pred, in an attempt to tone down symptoms to full remission. It did work fairly well for me for two weeks and then suddenly I flared much worse on it. I tried to use pred to quash the flare on top of uceris but it wasnt working that well, until I stopped uceris, and then the pred kicked in fast... So in my case uceris seems to have caused me to flare. I even tried adding uceris back in to be sure, and low and behold started flaring again.

As far as side effects go, I found it about the equivalent of 10 mg pred, while giving 40 mg pred of benefits, while it worked anyway. The manufacturer did some study with 6 mg (as opposed to the 9 they now sell; I think 6 is sold in Europe though along with 9) for longer term therapy, 12 mos or something, claiming no more side effects than placebo. i find that hard to believe personally. But in the Us the 9 is only supposed to be used for 8 weeks, though I bet some GI's would let you take it for longer if they are the laid back types.

My son seems to be immune to the side effects of Prednisone. Even though I absolutely hate that drug and so does he, (due to the known damage it can cause) he is pretty much the same whether he is on it or not. He doesn't have any trouble sleeping, has lots of energy, great appetite, and it gets his UC under control fairly quickly. Too bad it has so systemic long term effects.

I hope the Uceris will keep his UC under control while we taper the Prednisone. I would also bet that most GI's will keep their patients on it beyond the 8 weeks. I remember reading the prescribing info for Asacol and it had a reference about using it for 8 weeks also, but I've never met a GI that prescribed it for only 8 weeks.
