Had a flare on May'13. Just finished the course of Prednisolone. I'm having the below sysmptoms,

1.) vibration sensation in the rectum
2.) incomplete evacuation
3.) tiny visible mucus floating in the toilet bowl after flushing
4.) Trapped gas in the Sigmoid. When I press the sigmoid area I hear a sound krrrrrrk.

Anyone experiencing vibration sensation in the rectum? I have been having this feeling very often.
I went to the doctor, he said rumbling noise is normal for those with IBD, as the bowel is hyper sensitive.
I'm not convinced. I'm worried it could be the early stage of proctitis? as I have above mentioned symptoms.

Anyone has any any thoughts?

Thanks,
Saravanan

Hi JohnPhx,

It seems like that as if I have swallowed the cellphone :-) But fortunately I haven't swallowed.

Yes I think I know what you are talking about. I get a weird feeling too especially if I have gone a little more that day. My UC is now limited to 2cm of the rectum. My suggestion for you would be to get on some rectal meds. Enemas would be better then the suppositories.

Hi sherbear46,

Thank you for the suggestion.
I'm really annoyed - just after finishing the prednisolon the problems are starting. It has been just a week since I finished Prednisolon course.

I reported the symptoms to the doctor, he responded as long as there is no blood and diarrhea no need to worry. And he didn't do the rectal examination. I repeatedly requested him, he simply said no need for that this early.

Ok what is the cause of the gas trapped in the left side? Is it due to the rectal inflammation?

Thanks,
Saravanan

Yes, it's probably due to the rectal inflammation and it's probably spasming..unless you have a hemorrhoid?
Are you able to pass gass freely, or does it kind of stay in the rectum?

Rectal meds...call the doctor and get on them...I'd suggest mesalamine enemas..

Hi Quincy,

Thank you for your response. Sometimes the gas stays in the rectum and sometimes it comes out freely but sometimes I really need to push hard or strain to get the gas out.

Doctor also told me that it is due to IBS. Again he didn't do the rectal examination.

Have you ever had this vibration like sensation?

Thanks,
Saravanan

Have you tried an anti-spasm medication? It does help me a little with pressure/spasms on my sphincter.

I call it spasming, not vibrating...it could mean the same thing. maybe quivering? lol.

Your rectum...the area that will be the worst with UC considering it starts and ends there when it's healing...you need to address that area and rectal meds are the answer.

Can you clarify what you mean that you're worried it might be early stage proctitis...when you've already been diagnosed with proctosigmoiditis?

Hi Quincy,

In Oct'12 I was diagnosed with Proctosigmoiditis.
In May'13 I was diagnosed with Sigmoiditis i.e Rectum was OK.

I mentioned that I'm worried because I have just completed the Prednisolon course and it has just been a week. I thought everything is healed but looks like its starting again.. What the heck!!!

I like this in your signature - `My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS" worth it !!!` I'm going for it.

Really a ridiculous disease.

Thanks,
Saravanan

I also have that vibration feeling. I am currently tapering off pred (15mg) and occassionally have this vibration feeling and mucous. My feelings are that it is excess mucous being created perhaps?? I asked a GI nurse about the mucous and she said that mucous wasn't nessercerly (can't spell) a problem just that that area is sensitive and perhaps overactive at the moment. She also said that as long as you don't have blood, urgency or lots BMs then its not a problem. She also mentioned that it could be a bit of IBS however it can be difficult to tell the difference!! Its a weird sensation I know!

Hi puddle-duck,

Do you pass gas after the vibration sensation? or do you get cramps?
Does that vibraiton sensation increase during food intake? esp during breakfast?
Did you feel this sensation before? i.e before being diagnosed with UC ?

I agree its a weird feeling. I'm sure Docs would have heard this complaints from several patients, I'm just wondering why a study is not made on the cause of this sensation? May be its just not a serious problem!!
To me it might be a signal of mild inflammation starting and I always want to address anything at the early stage itself but the doctors don't understand. If someone has got a Doctor who really understands this then they are really lucky in the world.

Cheers,
Saravanan

Hi Saravanan,
No I don't have gas or get cramps with it and I don't remember having it before I had UC but that was 15 years ago so very hard to remember!! I haven't noticed it increasing during food intake either - the only correlation I have made is with increased mucous in the stool. Its only a very light vibation with me. What I have discovered over the years is that my symptoms are always changing. I dont' remember this vibrating sensation from previous flare ups/getting better etc. I am doing pretty good at the moment only having about 2 bm a day which are formed but soft. I have wondered if I am sensitive to something food related that is causing the vibration/mucous perhaps cheese or something else. It may just be mild irritation. I'm not too concerned about mine at the moment because its occassional but I am monitoring it and noting in my food diary what I have eaten etc. Do you have it every day? Do you keep a food diary?

Hi puddle-duck,

Yes I have every day - in the morning very severe I would say. May be due to stress while rushing to work.
I also have it increased during the food intake - breakfast and lunch.

I pass gas after the vibration but sometimes I get a cramp and feel the presence of stool in the rectum/anal canal i.e the gas pushes the stool to come out. I had to pull the stool inside because I know its only little stool and it won't come out as it was a involuntary spasm.

Sometimes I need to push the gas out by straining after the vibration sensation. I have to strain because I feel the presence of gas trapped in the rectum.

I don't know if these are related to the rectal inflammation which I expect the Doctor to answer by examining the rectum. But the doctor doesn't want to examine. Huhhh...

I don't maintain the food diary. Because the diet I'm following the same diet everyday. Bit boring isn't it??

Cheers,
Saravanan

It sounds rather more uncomftable than I have experienced I'm afraid. I know it is a horrible disease and extremely depressing at times. Could it be something that you are eating now that you are sensitive too and is causing the gas etc? If it is IBS then avoiding the offending food itme may help. But its not always easy trying to figure out what food offends I know!!

I know what you mean about a boring diet. I have been on a boring diet for the last 2 years and I've have enough! I have decided to go on aziothioprine after a really bad flare up and I am desperatly hoping that it will work and I can eat fairly normally again. I had a little bit of fish and chips the other day and it was absolute bliss with no bad effects.
