"Use of Non Steroid Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) can lead to a form of Colitis called NSAID Induced Colitis. In addition, they can make existing forms of colitis including Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis symptoms worse and should be avoided. A biopsy result on NSAID induced colitis will often return a finding of "non-specific colitis". [1] "

I saw first signs of tiny blood blood on toilet paper when coming off some NSAID's. I got stressed and it got worse. My symptoms did not present like 99% of people with ulcerative colitis, doctor said. I used a dose of prednisone and then next bowel motion 0 blood 100% formed poos. Doctor was amazed. Haven't had any symptoms since. Almost 1 year.

Biopsy showed "non-specific colitis"

Isn't it highly possible I just got induced colitis via NSAIDs, and should not every get a flare again?
Take away cause, takes away effect?

Am I taking asacol for no reason?

Like there has to be specific things that can cause inflamation. You break a bone. Knee swells and inflamation. You cut your knee and becomes infected and imflammed. etc

You have an auto immune disease on the colon and shows imflammation. You take NSAIDs it shows infamation. You get C diff colitis it gets imflammed. etc

Boy. That's a big question. There's only one way to find out. If you go down that path I would taper down on the Asacol as slowly as possible and be alert for symptoms. You are playing with fire.

That is exactly what brought on a friend of mines UC. He took his asacol for a while and now he doesn't take any meds....just watches his diet. He's fine now. Hope that works out the same for you too.

My experience is that if I take a Naproxen, I have a flare! So I don't take Naproxen.

It's a shame too, 'cause it really works well for headaches.

Diagnosed Feb 2007
Currently in remission since September 2009

Welcome to the club (my situation is no different). I have mentioned MANY a times on this board about NSAID and colitis (its even in my signature).

Answer these questions to get an answer to your question
- How often do you take NSAID?
- What dose do you use?
- Which NSAID do / did you use?
- Whats the indication you use NSAID for?

I take NSAID because I get migraines and no classical abortives work. The only thing that works in NSAID. I tried Advil, Alleve but they put me in flare in 2 to 4 hours, so I stopped taking them. So if you can avoid NSAIDs altogether.
But if you can not, like me,
get Ralefan/Nabumetone 750mg. Do NOT break the tablet, it is enteric coated. It takes about an hour to 90 minutes to see the effect but it does not lead to flare.
I tried Celebrex twice and it did not put me in flare but my GI says Ralefan is better than Celebrex (and even cheaper).
Diagnosed March 2007 with left sided UC.
Currently on daily dose of,
Sulfasalazine 1.5gm, Imuran, 100mg, Vit. B12, 1mg, Multivitamin, 1 tablet, Fish oil 2400mg , Vit D 2000 IU, Benebiotics 2caps, Folic acid 1mg. Canasa

Verapamil 320mg for migraine, Migraine episode now at least 4X a month,
Nabumetone 750mg as an abortive, so far so good with GI side effects.

Asacol isn't in the category of NSAID...they're systemic (although some are derm-topicals).

But, if your colon still shows inflammation, then you should be on Asacol. If you have rectal inflammation, then you should be on rectal 5ASA...

You can have both NSAID/ IBD....so, if you in fact do have IBD once you've been totally off the NSAID meds, then you do need to push your doc for a diagnosis.

q
*Heather* I give suggestions, do with them what you will.
Status: ...Asacol 3 @ 2x daily; Salofalk enema @ 3rd night (nightly/ flares, tapered/maintenance)
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~Bentylol 20mg as needed; Zantac 150mg; Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma);Effexor XR 37.5 (depression)
~vitamins/minerals/supplements; Probiotics....(RenewLife Ultimate Flora Critical Care+Primadophilus Reuteri capsules @ bedtime)
~Metamucil capsules 6 twice daily with meals; Vitamin D 4500 IU
~URSO for PBC(or PSC?) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS" worth it !!!

True,
None of us should be using NSAID but if there is no other option, what would you do? (and that is exactly what I am scared of, the day Nabumetone stops helping me with my migraine).
