What type do you recommend? Zinc gluconate? Picolinate? Amino acid chelate?

My naturopath wants me on zinc but he offered zinc sulphate which is no good (for me atleast). I want something easy on the gut... Any ideas?

Btw: he said the zinc would deactivate the excess protease in the colon...

I just paid $960 to my son's naturopathic doctor to figure out that Zinc Sulfate we use is not good and we should use Douglas Labs Zinc Picolinate.
I don't know whats so good about this preparation but I will ask that for sure.
Diagnosed March 2007 with left sided UC.
Currently on daily dose of,
Sulfasalazine 1.5gm, Imuran, 100mg, Vit. B12, 1mg, Multivitamin, 1 tablet, Fish oil 2400mg , Vit D 2000 IU, Benebiotics 2caps, Folic acid 1mg. Canasa

Verapamil 320mg for migraine, Migraine episode now at least 4X a month,
Nabumetone 750mg as an abortive, so far so good with GI side effects.

Ive heard good reviews of the picolinate, atleast your naturo did not try to give you the sulphate one like mine tried to. The sulphate one has 'GI irritation' listed as one of the side effects. And this guy is supposed to be one of the best with a wait list nearly as long as my GI's.
Seriously i don't blame those who don't trust naturopaths.

Anyway, so picolinate was well tolerated by your son?
Any other suggestions?

there's always this option:

How to Optimize Your Zinc Levels

As always, it's best to optimize your nutrition by implementing a diet rich in whole foods to receive your zinc requirements. Animal products are by far the richest in dietary zinc, as you can see in the table below. Oysters tip the scales at up to 182mg per serving!

Food Serving Size Zinc (mg)
Oysters 100 grams 16-182
Veal liver 100 grams 12
Pumpkin seeds (roasted) 100 grams 10
Roast beef 100 grams 10
Tahini (ground sesame seeds) 100 grams 10
Unsweetened chocolate 100 grams 9.6
Alaska King Crab 100 grams 7.6
Lamb 3 ounces 7.4
Peanuts (oil roasted) 100 grams 6.6
Cashews (dry roasted) 100 grams 5.6
Pork Shoulder 100 grams 5.0
Almonds 100 grams 3.5
Cheddar Cheese 100 grams 3.1
Chicken Leg 100 grams 2.9
Chicken Breast 100 grams 1.0

Haha Soystud yeh i kinda already know which foods are high in zinc...they grilled it into us about 'whole food sources of nutrients' back at university way too much i think. They didn't seem to tell us enough of what supplements are best absorbed/best tolerated. But thanks!

Ok seems picolinate is well tolerated...So i'll get on that. Thanks everyone :)

Soy: well i did the taste test that Delta mentioned and i could not taste the zinc.

Delta: thats interesting that he did not have a bad reaction, so what prompted the naturo to change his zinc?

I hate to show my ignorance but what does zinc do to help UC? Is it for healing wounds? I know it helps with odor control.

I want to try supplements since I have become allergic to more and more drugs as time progresses. Thanks for an info.

Zinc is very important to t- cells and the regulation of the immune system. It also balances excess copper in the body. It is essential for wound healing and intestinal healing.. And DNA synthesis.

Thanks Path, I'd like to ask about other supplements like Boswella which I took for arthritis and now the arthritis is acting up again. Does it work as an noninflammatory for UC?

Thats exactly what I am going to ask him during the next visit. I don't understand the system he is using for analyses and I do not want to get conned (I am paying close to $1000/visit), so I will grill him for sure. I will let you know what he says.
