There was a recent pist about a generic lialda but no dates for availability. It's two fold, first that med needs to become stocked in pharmacies, and second your healtg insurance formulary list myst be updated to include it.

I swore to myself that once i was off of prednisone that I'd burn both the pills and bottle with great hedonistic enjoyment: booze, food, and dance. And if I ever need a colectomy... ;-)

The generic for Lialda is already available from India. It is called Mesacol and I have already ordered it and received a few shipments. I get it from Canadapharmacy online. However, from what I understand, even though the drug itself, Mesalamine is the same there is no guarantee that the enteric coating is identical. Lialda's coating enables a delayed release of the drug and so does the generic, Mesacol but I've yet to find an answer as to if the release is exactly the same. I currently take 4 pills per day. Two in morning and two at night. I take two brand name Lialda in morning and take one Lialda with one Mesacol at night to try to save money. When I tried taking just all Mesacol, I started to feel some urgency and diarrhea return. The 3 brand and one generic seem to work ok for me. My insurance is Aetna Medicare and they don't cover the generic but I wind up getting three months supply for less than I pay for one month of Lialda with my insurance.
Diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis in 2007.
Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in Sigmoid Colon in June/2016, with 25 cm ulceration
Currently taking: Lialda 1.2g 4 pills/day; Canasa Suppositories 1,000mg 1/night; Rowasa Enema 4 oz. daily or nightly; Pro-Bio probiotics; L-glutamine; Slippery Elm; Nettle Leaf; Vitamin D-3; Vitamin B-12; Omega-3 plant based.
14 mo. Flare may be ending??

I'm doing the same as Nana 2, but I'm using generic only. I personally didn't have any issues switching to the generics, and my wallet seems happier.

Mesacol is generic Asacol. They just got FDA approval for generic Lialda. Pretty sure it will use the MMX Multi Matrix System even if the coating is a little different.
