I have been on Lialda since July 13th, since i was dx with UC..i take it 4x a day..i have been expierencing slight weight gain.7-10 even though i am still having about 7-10 bowel movements a day, which is down from 15-20. I am wondering if the ingredients cause weight gain..i have been researching but cannot find much on it..so i was wondering if anyone out there knew? any info would be great!! eyes

Weight gain is more than likely from the Lexapro rather than from the Lialda (5ASA med).  How much weight did you lose from the multi-times a day bms?  How much have you gained back?

Lialda is a once a day med...you take it 4 times a day or 4 pills once a day?

Have you had your thyroid checked? It could be a cause for weight gain.

Have you been on prednisone at all?

Welcome to the forum by the way! Where in the colon is your UC...throughout or limted?

I take 4 pills all at once in the morning, i have had my thyroid checked and it is fine. And no i have not been on prednisone(yet). My weight has stayed pretty steady throughout my flair suprisingly..and i have just seemed to have put on 5-7 lbs..it is mostly in the lower part of my colon, with proctitis. Soo..i have taken lexapro before and didnt have any weight gain..so i dont know if it is even caused from either one, i am guessing just because i havent been as active with exercising due to feeling so bad! im so glad i found this website, so i can ask any ?s and see that others are going through the same! well thanks for any information you have, and god bless!!!

I have been experiencing weight gain with Lialda, some confusion, dizzyness, high blood pressure and joint pain. The medicine did help control the inflammation. I have had colitis for 40 years. It has flared more in the last three years.

Interesting. I have been taking lialda four times a day for the past 1 1/2 to 2 weeks, and I have gained five pounds. I have not seen weight gain listed as a known side effect though.
In remission.

Figuring out how to reduce a flare or get into remission is a trial and error experience. Don't expect your GI to have all the answers. He was trained in making diagnoses, prescribing medications, and surgically removing the colon. He was not trained in alternative treatments. That's why they are called alternative treatments.

What works for me: Fecal transplantation, Probiotics, Anti-inflammatory foods, No HFCS, No crystalline fructose, No foods high in fructose, No artificial sweeteners, No pro-inflammatory foods when flaring, Vitamins, Lexapro (for stress).

Diagnosed (FINALLY) UC Sept 09
Taking Lialda 2X/day
Entocort 3X/day
Bentyl as needed
1000 mg Vitamin C
Prilosec 1X/day

Most recent visit now has Crohn's suggested as a possibility?

No - I have been on it for almost three years and never experienced weight gain as a result. If you are feeling better and having less BM's you may gain a few pounds but that is more likely to better GI health than to the medicine.
Dx 2006 right after the birth of my daughter, currently pregnant with #2!
Lialda 3 pills a day
Cort-enema nightly
Pred. 5mg
Canasa as needed
Probiotics and Multi-vitamin Daily

Is it possible that the weight gain is water weight mostly?  When I was on lialda I would swell up like a balloon.   The the asacol is doing it as well just not as severe.  I am really considering have a new doc when I find one try me on something besides 5asa's.

While my colon has seemed to finally healed up nicely especially since we added canasa, the side effects such as swelling and joint pain are killing me.  After I get started with the new reumy dr, I am going to have him refer me to a GI with lots of experience. It turns out that my current one has only been in practice for less than 2 years.

Left sided UC Pancolitis : Diagnosed 7/09
Currently on Pred 40mg, Lailda 2.4 once a day Asacol 2 pills 3 times a day, Canasa 1000 mg sup at night before bed.
Supplements: Bromelain 1 times a day, Tummeric 1 times a day, Good Belly probiotics 1 time a day. Multi, Vit D, B-complex. Soluable Fiber supplement..
Maybe? in remission

I suspected Lialda had contributed to weight gain for me. Glad you brought it up.
Azathioprine: 150mg since Dec 28. Not working and have side effects I don't like. Switching to 6mp 2/16.

Diagnosed Ulcerative Colitis June 07. Currently flaring.
37 year old female

Helped: no coffee, no dairy
Didn't help: no wheat, asacol, colazal
2x Lialda = remission, but was destroying my life

Yes. It could be water. I have issues with retaining water. When I was pregnant with my second, I had to get an amniocentesis to take out half of the water in my womb before giving birth. My doctor was worried the large amount of water would gush out, causing the umbilical cord to choke the baby. I gained 75 pounds with that pregnancy. about 15 pounds was fat, 10 pounds was baby, and the rest was water and placenta.
In remission.

I was diagnosed with UC in early June. Have been on Lialda and probiotics since. I have put on 5 lbs and I exercise every day and eat a good diet as I am part of Spark people. Anyone have any suggestions to take off the weight? As others have said it is strictly in the lower part of the stomach and you feel 7 months pregnant.

Thanks.

What kind of rectal meds? He was going to give me one, but we were waiting to see if the Lialda would work. Yes, I know it's still flaring. I can tell. I'm not the one who has BMs every couple hours. I'm every couple days.

I just talked to doc and he is going to try some sort of antibiotic.

Same here I have just gained about 8 pounds and couldn't figure it out.  I also have headaches every day since starting the Lialda.  It is in my stomach also.  I am bigger now than in June when I was five months pregnant.  I couldn't figure it out.  Funny thing is though I think the Lialda is working better than the 12 Asacol I was taking daily.  I wonder if the weight gain will level off?  Will we just keep getting bigger?

Boxermom,
My doc swears that Lialda doesn't put on weight. I said fine bloating, but on the scale it is still weight. We are trying an antibiotic to get rid of the last of the infection and he says that should stop the bloating. We'll see.

Right now we are doing 4 tabs of Lialda, and Align. I tried Colon Health, but the Align seems to be working better.

Strange thing but I have had a headache and my knees hurt also. I am so tired I don't feel like exercising. I bet it is all from the Lialda. Maybe I will switch back to my Asacol. I am taking the VSL #3 and Turmeric also. In the mornings I can just barely get out of bed. I never used to feel like this so it must be the Lialda. I was just at my GI doc today but didn't bring it up. I just didn't realize until I read these posts.

The fatigue is gone for me. I have no joint pain or headaches (aside from my son). I just can't sit for extended periods and I've never seen such strange things come out of a person lol

Joint pain here, not weight gain yet, but headaches, fatigue, NO energy (had more before Lialda), sore ears, sinus issues, and low back pain. It's a compromise - spend the day in the bathroom or sit around and ache. Sucks.

I stopped the Lialda and went back on the Asacol a few weeks ago.  The headache went away but I still have the joint pain.  I still have the weight gain.  I also noticed that my stomach is starting to make a lot of noise again and I don't feel as well.  The Lialda had really started to make me feel better I think.

Today I took the Lialda again. I will see how it goes.  Like luv2ride said it will have to be a compromise.  I would rather be heading into remission with side effects than not.  If it is too much to handle I will go back on the Asacol.

I used to be on Lialda. Only problems I had were when I went to urinate! It would sting at times, and feel as though there was more, but it never got out!
Within days of being off of Lialda, that problem stopped.
Current Medications:
Apriso - (4) .375gm once a day, Advair Diskus - 100/50 twice a day, Azathiroprine - 75mg once a day, Allegra - 60mg twice a day, Nexium - 40mg once a day, Vitamin D - 50,000 IU once a day
Past Medications:
Colozal, Iron, Lialda, Prednisone

I have really found no side effects from Lialda aside from the weight gain. My big problem is I am supposed to do Jury duty in September, but how is one supposed to do that when you can't stay away from the bathroom? I don't know what to do.
