Do you take all of your Prednisone at once?  I just bumped up from 20mg to 40mg today and want to make sure it is ok to take it all in the morning at one time.  Is the best?

thanks

When I was taking prednisone, I was advised to take it as one dose in the morning.

Rio, 31 yr old male - diagnosed with UC in 07/2006.

Alternative therapies for several months (SCD, ayurvedic treatments, chinese herbs, VSL#3): didn't work and became anaemic.
Canasa, 2 daily: remission for a month then flared up.
Completed first (6-week) tapered course of Pred in 10/07, flaring up since coming off it.
Currently on: 4800mg Asacol (6 x 400mg, twice a day) & Aloe Elite (not sure if it works).
Holding off from taking next dose of Pred as the side-effects were strong, but may have to give in if I'm not better soon.

When I am flaring or even as I taper (as I am now) I need to take about 2/3 in the morning and then a booster of 1/3 or so after dinner to prevent too much pain keeping me up at night. Sometimes I even took 50% in the morning and 50% after dinner. Officially, all in the morning is supposed to be optimal for the bodies adrenal needs, but it just doesn't work for me because the 'gap' overnight results in so much renewal of symptoms that I can't sleep, and renewed bleeding sets the stage for not making any progress in healing.

I split mine until I was at 15mg. So I would do half in the am and half before dinner.

You should ALWAYS take pred with food.
You should take your AM does before 9 AM to stick with your body's natural cycle.
Because of the "gap" that someone else mentioned, I took mine in two doses until I was at 20mg. I always took the 20mg in the AM and the rest (I was never above 40mg) in the afternoon with a snack. If you don't have a problem with the "gap", take it all in the AM.

With this flare (I was out of practice for 9 years) I started by splitting it and it didn't help at all. Once I took it all at once in the morning there was an immediate change for the better.
Current Prescriptions:

40 mg 30 mg Prednisone per day, 1 x per day
Sulfasalazine, 3x per day
   1500mg @ Breakfast, 1500mg @ Lunch, 1000mg @ Dinner
1 Mesalamine Enema per night

Funny how some do better with one dose a day and others with splitting. I know that one way one is supposed to help the body get off pred altogether, when on the very low doses (a few mg or less) is to do alternate days, but even that caused me to start flaring in the gaps, and I did much better to spread it out. However, at very low doses alternate day is certainly a good way to avoid having to make tiny splits of the pills, especially if one can;t get 1 mg pred tablets.

Wow I'm glad I found this thread; I'm going up from 20 to 40 mg a day; so far I've been splitting the 20 mg AM and PM and while I have had no other symptoms since I started on Prednisone, the bleeding has actually gotten worse... I guess that splitting hasn't been working for me these last few weeks since I started.

This thread is very old, so, does anyone have different opinions on this? should I take the 40 mg with breakfast then as most suggested in this thread?
Male, 25, from Chile but studying in the USA until next year at least
Ulcerative Proctitis, 10 cm, diagnosed on July 2010

First flare--ongoing--started right after the diagnosis, there was no previous reason to suppose it could be UC. I guess it was the pre-colonoscopy laxative what triggered this flare.

Currently on:
Prednisone 10 mg, 2 tablets a day--Just barely started on Aug 2010
Hydrocortisone Suppositories--Since July 2010

I split dose 20mg in the morning and 20mg 12hr later before bed. The GI only told me to do this because I was having more symptoms during the night than the day when I was just taking all 40mg in the morning. I guess it depends at what time of day/night you get most of your symptoms whether you should split dose or take all in the morning. Goodluck.

Thanks Cavalier9, well the only symptom I have is a lot of bleeding... and some occasional gas, but I don't see a difference in the symptoms during the day or night. I'll see how it goes in the next few days, I just want to get better before fall semester begins and I go back to school...

I've done both, all morning or morning and night. If you take it later, it's more likely to interfere with sleep. Always take with food.

I was just recently put on prednisone about 4 weeks ago. I had different opinions on timing from 2 Drs coming from the same office. One preferred taking the entire dose in the morning so as not to interfer with the bodies natural bioryhthms and sleep. Currently I'm on 40 mg and take 20 mg in the morning and 20 mg at dinner time. Does not seem to affect my symptoms but I don't sleep well at all. I'm always waking up.

As an anti inflammatory prednisone works better if split up into two doses 12 hours apart. This keeps a more constant level in your system. However, a common side effect is restlessness and taking it at night can make it difficult for many people to sleep. This is why they suggest taking it all in the morning. We were told to first try splitting it up and if you have any issues sleeping to take it all in the morning. idea
