I would love to be able to take Lactaid and be able to eat a snickers bar or ice cream. Does it work? or is it a bad idea? Has anyone here tried it?

it's not a bad idea....actually, it gave me MORE gas and discomfort
It was less discomfort with the milk products.
Try it and see if it helps.
Probiotics will also help.
Do you use rectal meds as well as the ASacol?
Where in the colon is your UC?

I take Lactaid when I eat ice cream (which normally tears me up) and it helps me immensely. Though I limit my ice cream intake to not rock the boat.

I don't know if milk messes me up, so I couldn't answer. But if you can handle a tiny bit, now is the time of the year to go buy those TINY TINY little snickers bars, the ones that are like and inch by an inch for the holidays, and try one.

Lactaid never did anything for me. Tried it off and on for the past decade, and it failed every time. Everyone is different though, so if may work for you.

Lactaid will only help if you are lactose intolerant since Lactaid provides the enzyme that lactose intolerant people are lacking. I used Lactaid for years and found it allowed me to eat dairy products (in moderation) without problems.
I suppose that it's possible that UCers who can't tolerate dairy aren't necessarily lactose intolerant but rather just having difficulty with certain foods. Does anyone know if that's a reasonable assumption I'm making?
Anyway, lactaid does work if you are lactose intolerant. At least, that was my experience.

Yes if you are lactose intolerant lactaid will work...I used have issues with lactose intolerance but since taking primadophilus reuteri probiotic which aids with lactose intolerance I no longer have that issue (it must be taken daily as it is a probiotic).

The Lactaid tablets seem too potent for me; they give me a burning sensation in the transverse colon. However, I do fine using Lactaid 1% or nonfat milk daily. I wouldn't recommend a whole Snickers bar at once; it's too rich in fat & sugar! Try a bite or two as the other members above have suggested-- to see how it agrees with you. My sympathies, though, because I adore Milky Way candy bars. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

I am lactose intolerant and use Lactaid all the time... sometimes, on a daily basis. I use it for ice cream, butter, cheese, yogurt, etc. Anything with dairy in it, I take a Lactaid with. I drink the Lactaid milk also. It's brought dairy back into my life!
Current Medications:
- Asacol (4 pills, 2x per day)
- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)
- Prenatal Vitamin (1x per day)
