Hi everyone. I am new to this forum. I found out I had UC in May 2007. Since then I have been on Lialda, Colazol, Rowasa, Canasa and Cortifoam. I keep getting flares several times a week. My best period was about 7 days with no issues!

Twice this week I had severe throbbing in the butt. I can't sit, stand or lay down until this subsides. Any attempt to use any medicine rectally (like Cortifoam (Hydrocortison Acetate), Canasa, etc) immediately results in a bowel movement.

Is there something I can do to subside this? Also, are there foods that I can avoid to begin with to avoid this problem ?

Thank you very much

Hi...Welcome to the forum. Are you able to use any rectal meds after a bm?

How many are you having in one day?

Are you bleeding with bms?

Is the pain directly in the anus/rectum....or is it kind of radiating upward, sideward..etc?

Is the pain during bms, after...anytime..etc?

Are you having diarrhea or solid bms?

What exactly med-wise are you using at this time?

Has the doctor given you any antispasmodic meds such as dicyclomine? I suggest you call him/her and request a prescription.

When you had the week of no symptoms...what meds were you taking before/during that time? Were you lax in taking them during that week?

I also suggest you start a good probiotic.

Try rectal meds., like Rowasa. Try using 1/2 the bottle. After using it, do something to take your mind off of the feelings in your butt (like talking to someone). THe uncomfortable feeling usually only lasts for about 2 minutes.

hi, i can understand, and am so sorry for your condition.
i've had UC for 6.5 years i'm so bad with pain that the only thing that helps for a few hours is strong painkillers.at the moment i take co-codomols, but please make sure you check with ur doc first.
i'm from England and i assume that most of you are from other countries,so everyone could have their own rules.
P.S waiting for bed to have my surgery, hope i get there soon.

It can take some time for rectal meds to kick in, especially the worse the flare is, you may have to continue with cortifoam for a long period of time before you start to notice improvements...it's hard to be patient but unfortunately that's the way it often goes...I've been on cortifoam for as long as a year before tappering off of it. I've only ever used it at night just before bed (never in the morning or 2X/day as suggested) that way I know it'll be in me until the am with my first BM's of the day.

Probiotics are also key in aiding with getting things under control...a good one I use is called primadophilus reuteri made by natures way, found in the refridgerator at most healthfood stores.

:)
My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it!  LOL  :)
