It is 4:46 am. I was awaked by severe coughing, a severe burning in my lungs and throat and the taste of vomit and, I think, soap in my mouth. I keep coughing and when I do, I feel like I need to vomit, but so far I haven't and I am unable to return to sleep.

I ate some tacos from a mexican food place before bed, but I've eaten from this place many times without issue and I've never had an issue, but I can taste them in my mouth as well. I don't know if maybe I threw up in my mouth a little bit while I was sleeping, like we sometimes do when we are awake and make it somehow got into my lungs? Is that possible? But why am I tasting soap? Every time I try to fall back to sleep I begin coughing again and the burning stops. I tried to drink some water, then some milk and then eventually some soda for the bubbles, but this taste is still there and if I lay down it starts up again.

I don't have any other symptoms. I just have burning lungs, throat and a strange soapy/vomity flavor in my throat and mouth. I have not vomited and the coughing is seeming to subside.

Should I be worried that maybe there was something in the food I ate, or am I overreacting?

thanks!
a little confused

Sound like acid reflux. I would not eat tacos before bedtime and check in with my physician.  I had this problem and still do at times when I cheat on what I should do to avoid it.  I was dx with GERD.

Welcome to our world.

In response and inquiry to sfwhite1 (or anyone else who may have info):  I had the same thing happen to me a couple of months ago and then again last week.  I woke up early in the morning and had burning lungs with the burning soapy-tasting reflux.  In last week's episode, I could barely breathe and thought I had inhaled the soapy substance into my lungs and was dying.  I threw up and coughed and the burning finally stopped and I could breathe a little better.  I've had GERD most of my life, but it has gotten a lot worse over the past year.  After the first episode, I started taking Nexium.  I thought I was doing better, so the episode last week really scared me.  I am scared to eat now and scared that it is going to happen again when I go to bed at night.  I was wondering if you have had any additional experiences or found out anything else about this that might be helpful.  (I'm scared to have an endoscopy because of what it might reveal.)
Thanks! lal.la  sad

It certainly appears to be acid reflux. it can come on suddenly. I like the others have the same problem. See a doctor as soon as you can. In the mean time ( obviously ) the mexican foods.  YOu may be one of the lucky ones, who can control the GERD by Diet alone. Good Luck asn keep posting!

I have this happen if I eat the wrong foods so diet plays a huge role in how I deal with my GERD.  Do see your physician.  IMHO your physician is the one who can help you out regarding meds etc.

Sometimes we eat something we don't even realize is going to be a culprit and you cannot stop eating.
Hope you get this all worked out and try to keep your anxiety from rising.  It just throws you into a vicious circle of "what ifs".

Peace

Acid reflux. Sounds like you aspirated some acid into your lungs...which can be quite dangerous.

If it continues then see a doc. It could just be a "one off", which in that case you don't have much of a concern.
