Hi everyone --

I have been doing a lot of investigation as to why I have inherited GERD/Indigestion and Heartburn problems -- and I came across this random study from a GI doctor that said that those who suffer from chronic constipation are most likely to have GERD issues...

which makes sense -- due to the fact that oe is not eliminating waste and therefore is going to place pressure in the upper GI area..

I also read that those who suffer from severe non stop heartburn - usually would NOT respond to PPI's because they have an underlining dyspepisa issue--  a functional gastro issue ( stomach not digesting foods at appropriate times)
this study remarked zelnorm ( before it was pulled from the market due to people dying from side effects of heart failures)  taking with ppi's showed that this therapy proved the most benefical because it addressed both the slow empying in the GI Trac and the gerd that was associated with it

so my question is this -- who on this board has GERD/heartburn thanks to Constipation issue ?  and if this is you/// how are you handling this predominant issue with its evil cousin(gerd) ?  and are you finding success with heartburn addressing the constipation

Thank you all again for any input :)

Hey, I have IBS and I use  fibercon daily and have for years which has decreased the constipation but I also have to use a natural laxative frequently too.

Hi KItt

Thank you for your reply :)

Has addressing the constipation issue helped the frequency / intensity of your GERD and or heartburn?

saddae, I read your post a few days ago and it struck home with me, as I had been wondering about constipation being connected to my case of gerd.  But I kind of poo poo'd it (ha ha no punintended) until I read your post.

I had never really suffered from constipation, but I did for sometime just before I was diagnosed with reflux.  My doctor told me to start taking vitamins, she mentioned Centrum.  So I bought some and started taking them faithfully.  On one visit I was telling her about how constipated I had become----welllll DUH, I should have been taking the Centrum Silver--with the iron---now I never gave it a thought but I should have known the iron would make me constipated---actually I knew better!  Just forgot! cry
It was right after this bout of constipation when my gastro gerd/heartburn problems began.

I would like to read the doc's random study you mentioned.  Do you remember his name, so maybe I would be able to find it?  Thanks!   :-)

Hi Mary love

I have the printout at home of where I found this info .. I know the doctor's name was Brian Lacey MD

If you google his name he's all over the web for IBS and such

I will find the IP address I got my info from and post it on here.. ( if thats allowed?)

I have to say that Iam a severe constipation sufferer and never had heartburn acid reflux until a few months ago.. my new GI doc suggested that if I can get the constipation in order I should be able to see an improvement in the GERD issues.. i sure hope he's right-- !

Saddaze, thanks for the doc's name, I will google him.

My constipation went away after I changed the vitamins.  However that is when the gerd began.  Then when I was taking Prilosec and later Prevacid, my bowels went the other way.  Loose and very loose.  I am taking Milk of Magnesia's Colon Health now and it is working fine for me.

Have you ever tried a bowel softener?  My mil swears by Rite Aids brand of stool softener.  I see where the ingredients are the same as the brand Ducolax.

I do try to get a lot of fiber in my diet, that helps.  It is also important to drink eight glasses of water, I drink more than that.  Also something that helps constipation is a lot of walking.  I do the mile walk with Leslie Sansone.  I remember when I first began using her cd, I would have several bowel movements a day.  :-)

I did read somewhere, where some people who get heartburn from food not digesting, may have not have enough 'acid'.

I did the Braggs acv/honey mixture after I couldn't handle any of the PPI's and that worked for me.  I took it for about two months after every meal.  I am off it now and have absolutely no problems with heartburn.  Getting back to the Braggs acv, I also read where this could help digestion, so maybe that is what it did for me.

Good luck!

PS, I just bought Metamucil's wafers, for making sure I get enough fiber.  I have read and heard good things about them.  They have Psyllium in them, which is suppose to be a good thing.

thanks mary love

iam takign miralax currently - and i go somewhat ...
Im taking prevacid currently.. 2x a day

the heartburn is non stop -- it varies in degrees... im just hoping thaty if i go to the bathroom continuously each day i will see a gerd/heartburn improvement..

i did buy braggs ACV and tried it once but i didnt notice anything.. but then again i didnt take it religiously with meals ( or before meals)

i know that i would like to wean myself to 30mg prevacid 1x a day and take zantac for rest of the day // that may help with the heartburn.. i dont know ..

i will look into the stool softner and MOM colon health.. anything to get my move on :) either way it cant be helping my GERD if my lower gi trac is plugged up --

we'll see. thank you for taking the time to reply.

best of health to you

I am coming off of PPI (which gave me worse reflux because I chose to take it and be young and silly rather than be healthier). Constipation was big issue until I started putting Benefiber in some of my water everyday. Drinking WATER seems really important. Benefiber helps change stool consistency. Also walking for a good 20-30 minutes a day helps as well.

Also for me, lots of Iron makes me constipated so I had to find good multivitamin with less iron.

Well--I never had constipation until after my hysterecomy last year. My diviterculois appears to stem from the gas created from GERD/IBS.
