I have Barrett's syndrome and a stomach hernia. I'm taking prilosec otc but working 3 rd.shift and day sleeping doesn't always workout to well. Today I woke up with a burning pain in my throat due to Acid reflux. What stops the pain? I try tums and other things but can't find anything to stop the pain. Do you have any ideas?

This sounds so crazy, but take a teaspoon of vinegar when you are having the pain, it worked for me I am not a doctor I read about it and thought it was crazy, but was so desperate one day I did it.  .  Good luck.

Is any kind of vinegar OK? I had this last night and I am so tired, it hurt so bad I couldn't sleep.

I have heard that vinegar helps some people, but I have also read that it is horrible for acid reflux because of the acid in vinegar.  Makes sense.  Debbie, more power to you, Whatever works, right? yeah

Tbear129 - I have the burning in my throat, too, plus in the back of my mouth.  Sometimes it is awful.  I also have bad breath with it. Do you?  Yuk!  I think acid fumes are coming up from my stomach.  I can have the bad, acid, burning taste in my mouth just standing an hour or so after a meal.  It has to be fumes unless stomach acid can run uphill.  Really has me puzzled.  I've had it for SO long...yeras.  Nothing seems to help.  Prilosec gives me stomach cramps.  It helps a little but it's a tradeoff.

Would like to hear more of your symptoms.  What about your Barrett's esophagus?

I have just found this site and have been reading the posts on GERD.It sure has been interesting reading as this is the first forum I've found on this. I also have GERD and have the burning throat and bad breath which I never had before this. I took Nexium for 6 weeks which gave me Diarrhea but did not help the throat. They switched me to Pariet which didn't help it either and in fact gave me extreme heartburn and fatigue, in spite of the fact that my dr says that could not possibly be. I quit taking that last week and have improved noticably. I am taking liquid Gaviscon and that helps. I was interested in the comment on vinegar. Would like to try it but am afraid it would make my heartburn worse. I sleep with my bed elevated, don't touch tea, coffee or soda, don't eat late at night. Are there other things that might help? Thanks, Adjca , Nl

Sounds like you are doing what the rest of us are doing. I sleep with the bed elevated, try to stay away from caffeine, pop, coffee, and tea, with nothing to eat after seven.  Nexium didn't help me either.  I think the doctor thought it was all in my head.

I am taking Pepcid twice a day right now and it is helping as much as the Nexium did.  I have had two endoscopies.  Both times, the doctor said my stomach is inflamed and that I have gastritis.  I can't eat a real big meal.  Bulky foods make the reflux bad.  For example, several pieces of pizza with a big tossed salad from the salad bar is a real killer.

I think my Gerd is worse during stressful times.  That burning in my throat and bad breath is the WORST.   Sometimes it lasts for weeks.  Sometimes it goes away.  After reading that GERD is a chronic disease, I certainly believe it.   I've suffered for six or seven years.  Best of luck to you.

I am waiting for the endoscopy now. I have already been diagnosed with the Hiatius Hernia but the drugs they gave me then only made the problem worse for before that, I only had occasional heartburn. We live GF so there's lots of things I can't take. The Gaviscon seems to help a lot and I also eat small meals-well, for me they are small as I was a huge eater for years although I am only a small person, but I was very active. The nexium made me lose more than 10 lbs which would be great if I wanted to lose weight but I did not need that. The dr says the stomach acid is washing up and burning my throat but I never feel anything coming up so don't know if he's right or not. I am also waiting for the results for the Sjogren's syndrome test I had last week, which may account for the really bad throat but who knows? The pain in my throat ws extreme but it may have been the drugs that did that.

My specialists appt got cancelled for 2 more weeks as he will be out of town. GGRRR!! This is the 2nd time this has happened with this dr. Not much I can do about it though and I am feeling much better now that I've given up the Pariet so shouldn't complain.

What I find almost humorous about this whole thing, was until I was diagnosed with this stuff, I thought everyone got that burning throat pain... :-) My husband tells me no...

But, I do have a question... a few times in the last two weeks I have been suddenly awaken with the burning throat pain and the presence of some sort of acid in the back of my throat enough that I wake up because I can't breathe... and it takes some time for me to finally get ti back together... Does anyone else experience something like that... it's pretty scary, especially for my husband.... any suggestions would be helpful... THANKS

Hi AEA!

It sounds like you're having bile.  Have you talked to your doctor about your new symptom?  I don't know of any home remedies to help with bile.  I had it so bad that it prohibited me from eating and I had no choice but to take a prescription, but it did go away, and I haven't had it since.

From my experience, if you can keep your heartburn at bay and not troubling you, you will not have any bile (pungent liquid in your throat). I've never had bile without having heartburn.

As for trouble breathing, that could be a result of your heartburn.  I know when I have heartburn, sometimes my chest feels tight and I have to take several deep breaths, because it feels like I'm not getting enough oxygen.  Are you on any medicine for your heartburn?  Maybe you should try a different medicine, it sounds as if it isn't working as well as it should.

I hope you feel better soon, please let us know how you're doing! :)

Hi Carol,

Not sure if my previous email reached you? Hope the test went ok!! Chin up eh!!

I contact you tonight as Ive started on Pariet 20mg x1 per day. You say it was worse for you? What do you mena by that? was is the side effects Carol?

Well I started on Zantac to Zoton to omeprozole to Nexium onto metoclopromide now onto PARIET!! I'm hoping I hit on one good ppi one day that works for me! Northern Joe has given me some good advice.

I was offered a fudal wrap that is a procedure to tighten the sphincter (upper) this requires laporscopic surgery. I have all the details should anyone require it! Its 90 percent successful and rid's you totally of any reflux according to the wesite I visited. I'm going to try as many pills as possible before I opt for surgery as there is always a risk!

Regards

Lee

Hi Lee. I emailed you before I read this post, so I'll give my opinion on Pariet now. It did not help me at all. I couldn't sleep while taking it and spent most nights just sitting on the couch watching TV. Couldn't eat and lost more than 10 lbs -on my 120 frame that's not so good. Absolutely gave me heartburn whereas before I only had occasional heartburn even though I had the burning throat. The drs attributed my burning throat to the acid coming up from my stomach where I have the hernia. This started as a lump in my throat and progressed to burning which I still have 5 months from when it started and of course now I have more heartburn. Got my HSI alert today and it has some interesting info on Acid reflux. The link is:

http://www.hsibaltimore.com

Don't know about this wrap. Is that the one where you can never throw up after having it done? I imagine that would be very bad if you had a stomach flu or something and you absolutely were sick to your stomach, wouldn't it?

Good luck, Carol

i guess it did. i have just had an "attack".. woke up with burning... feels like i swallowed lye. I haven't had one of these in 3 years. I had forgotten how debilitating it is. I tried taking: a spoonful of MOM, gargled with hot water, took a nexium, took Alka Seltzer.. nothing soothed the intense pain. If I have to cough, it exacerbates the pain. So, I try not to cough.... Does anyone have a quick remedy to soothe the pain so that I can go back to sleep? How long does it usually last before it subsides?

I also suffer from atypical symptoms, no heartburn but burning throat, sour taste, dry tongue, stomachache etc. I trialed 2 months of prilosec (80 mg/day) No relief. I opted for a nissen. Symptoms started back in a week. I'm now 10 weeks post op and confirmed with PH probe to be refluxing. I found a good explanation of this kind of reflux. It's called LPR. It's a different beast than traditional GERD, and harder to control. Mainly upright refluxing (I didn't reflux at all laying down) which is why raising the bed never helped me!
