Hi everyone,

I have been experiencing alot of indigestion ever since Wednesday night when I woke up with a horrible sharp pain in left shoulder.  I've had the acid reflux since along with bloating and gas and almost constant burping.  Is the sharp pain in my left shoulder a common symptom GERD?

Hi mserica!

Sorry to hear you are having such discomfort!

I haven't heard of sharp pain associated with GERD.  What you're describing actually sounds like it might be caused by gas.  I've had severe sharp pains in my back & shoulder before, both caused by gas.  Have you tried Beano or GasX?  I suspect that may help alleviate your shoulder pain.

Your symptoms just began Wednesday?  Are the alleviated by anything?  Rolaids, Tums, Maalox?  Do you notice if they get worse following certain foods?  The burping does sound like a symptom of GERD, along with the indigestion.  As for the bloating, I know I tend to get bloated after an uncomfortable episode.

Is there history of GERD in your family?  Do you have a doctor you visit regularly? I'd say if you are still having these symptoms Monday, give him a call and see what he suggests.

I hope you feel better soon!  Please keep us informed and let me know if you have any other questions/concerns! :)

Hi, I have the same EXACT problem that you posted I have been bloated & burping & have a pain in my left shoulder for over 2 months. I was wondering if you found out what the cause was?

You might want to have your gall bladder checked out. Shoulder blade pain is often referred pain from the GB. Hida scan and ultra sound to see if you have any large stones. If not they have meds to get rid of them.

I have had a pain in my shoulder also for a while.  I thought it was muscle, but it comes and goes.  It does bother me alot when I do eat and have indigestion later.  Of course, I always think the worst and think it is something bad.  I have cases of panic attacks.  After reading some of these forums, I am going to get a physical.  Thanks

I have had some issues for the last few years that have taken some time to figure out. i ended up with celiacs disease.. and have had my gall bladder out about 3 months ago.. but still end up with shoulder pain in my left shoulder... really painful.. kind of like that rocking pain.. but have found that gas x does work... but if you can make yourself.. burp... it helps making it go away faster.. it stays a little uncomfortable... but not like what your starting with... hopefully... this helps...

I had the same experience last night. about an hour after a shrimp curry dinner, I felt like I had some of my food caught down my esophagus. I had a glass of water to get it moving, but it was still there. about another hour later, I could feel a sharp intense pain in my back just under my left shoulder blade. I tried some tums thinking it was indigestion. The pain would come and go very suddenly and it was very sharp, so I tried vomiting, which didn't stop the pain. If I forced myself to burp, it would go away temporarily. It all lasted for about an hour and it was the most intense pain I had ever felt, kind of like being stabbed in the back.
Was it just gas? If so, my partner didn't experience it even though we had the exact same thing to eat and drink. Thanks for any suggestions on what may be the cause.

It sounds like an esophageal spasm.
You might have a hiatal hernia and the food got stuck or irritated there.

I have had the sharp pain in my left shoulder for the past month. Thinking it was a pulled muscle I have been using moist heat to no avail. Never connected it to gerd. I thought maybe the way I have been sleeping caused it. Every day is a new adventure with gerds.

I have had the bloating in the stomach problem for about 2 years... and went gluten free.. which helped.. but the persistant pain in my left shoulder... still remained... and i had not been able to figure out what it was.. i knew it was food related... but.. last night.. i ate.. broccoli salad and cucumbers.. what a pain...and i took 2 gasx and tried vomiting.. my stomach distended and my left shoulder was killing me.. so now.. i am going to eliminate the broccoli and cucumber... pretty soon.. there won't be anything left... i do however... find that the burping and the gasx usually do the trick... strange isn't it how your shoulder and your stomach can interact.. my doctor thought i was kind of crazy.. but with time.. you figure out.. what causes it.. and then eliminate it...glad to see i am not the only one.. but sorry that you all have that pain.. its so intense.. yes.. that rocking kind of pain.. no talking.. just need it to go away... sue

I know exactly what you mean! As long as 5-8 hours after eating something (usually too greasy) I end up with nausea, burping and a pain in my left shoulder blade in the back, along the line where the bone is. I take Tums and sometimes that helps, sometimes not. I take 40 mg of Nexuim every morning and have Zantac for breakthrough. I do not understand how your shoulder area can be so painful from gas...but there it is!

There are days I thought I was having a heart attack & went to the ER only to be given a GI cocktail and feel fine. I've had EKG's, stress test and dye tests run on my heart and all I have is a slight mitral valve prolapse.

I, just like most on here, feel better after I burp A LOT, but it sure does help with the pressure...takes an awful lot of burping however & does not alleviate 100%, but much better.

I am glad to see I am not the only one and that I am not bonkers to think it is something worse. You just never know how your body is going to react.

I have the same pain most of you describe..center of left shoulder blade.. sometimes its relieved with burping then again not really at all.. I do have IBS..constipationt type.. so I get the bloat all the time.. I do have emphysema and am on oxygen most of the time.. I was worried that it might be lung cancer as I do recall my late husband who had lung cancer complaining about pain in his left shoulder blade.. also a late friend who had lung cancer did the same.. so of course I thought oh no! Its normal I think we all think the worst.. I am feeling a bit better tho now that I have read these posts.. However I guess I better have my gallbladder checked as that problem does run in my family..My Mom, Dad, 2 brothers and one sister.. out of 7 children.. although to date I haven't had any of the other symptons of that.. I have had this pain before but it never lasted this long aweek this time.. I am wondering if eating alot of garden veggies may be causing it.. I have had alot of summer squash, cukes and tomatoes lately.. I am thinking maybe I should try the Beano that was suggested.. Gas X doesn't always work for me.. any other suggestions? I feel bad that so many are suffering with this..it sure is miserable and you all have my sympathy...hopefully we can find something to help us all!

Welcome to the forum.  I agree with you - we all frequently think something bad may be happening to us when we develop a new sx. You are not alone in this thinking as long as we follow up with our Drs. to be sure it is not something serious.

I am sorry to read of your husband losing the battle to lung cancer.

Ahhhhh, the gallbladder.  A wise move to have your gb checked out.

I have had this pain under my left shoulder blade for probably 4 years. It usually starts with heart burrn and this goes straight back under my left shoulder blade from my heart. Sometimes I will go a few days pain free and other times It's everyday. Once I go to bed at night I usually wake up feeling fine in the morning but by bedtime I am hurting something fierce. My first dr gave me previcid and I told him that it made it worse so he said that it couldn't be GI it was muscular and that's all he wanted to discuss. Since then I have taking pepcid and prilosec and they did not help at all. The newest prescription I have is for protonix and I am finally getting a referral to see a gastro specialist. I really can't figure out what foods make it worse except that eggs are not kind to me. I find some relief with belching but so far the only thing that helps is going to bed and I feel better in the morning.

This is what I get when my stomach bloats and the GI doctor said it is the Vegus nerve.
I had the left shoulder pain for 6 weeks after my NF surgery and once the swelling went down, the pain left. Now I get it when my stomach bloats or my esophagus goes into a spasm.
The vegus nerve runs from your brain down along side of your esophagus and behind the stomach and down your legs. It controls the digestive system.
Check it out with your doctor, but this has been my problem.
At first I thought I was having a heart attack because sometimes the pain goes into my jaw but my heart is fine as it was checked out.

I have had GERD for many years. For much of the time in recent years Protonix or Pantoprazole has allowed me to pretty much eat what I want within reason. Several months ago, I heard reports that long-term use of proton inhibitors may contribute to osteoporosis so I cut back to taking one every other day.

about two weeks ago, for no explainable reason (although it was around Thanksgiving) I started suffering with what I thought was acid reflux, accompanied by the pain under the left shoulder blade. I thought the RX was no longer working, but after reading these posts, I now realize this isn't so much acid reflux as it is gas-related.

Surprisingly, my GI specialist did not seem familiar with this problem (pain in upper left shoulder) and she certainly never mentioned the Vegus nerve. She did suggest I try an OTC product called Digestive Advantage Gas Defense Formula.

She also told me to change from the Protonix to Zegerid, but I think I may hold off on making that change to see if the gas prevention makes an improvement.

I can't imagine living with this pain long term!

P.S. I have recently put on a few pounds and I think this may be a factor, as well.

I am so sorry but in this case I strongly feel this forum is not the right place to find the answers you are looking for.  I believe your Father needs a neurologist as his problems seem to be neurological in nature.

Did his Dr. ever mention a stroke ?  Vomiting and not being able to speak in my opinion is a medical emergeny so please call 911 or contact his physician immediately.

My prayers are with both you and your Father.

Kindly,
Kitt

Any physician have a suggestion as to whether 9 (3/3x per day)150mg pills of clindamycin in conjunction with 2 bactrim a day (one morning one night) may cause left heavy chest and shoulder pain? I ate a lot of yogurt yesterday to prevent a yeast infection onset from taking so many antibiotics, and im not sure if it is the meds or the.yogurt (maybe lactose intolerant) but something has been causing severe gas... could the chest pain be related to the gas or are they a side effect of the meds, or am I just plain crazy? Standing up helps a bit, laying down is worse. I will feel quite embarrassed if im merely feeling what heartburn is for the first time. 24 yr old female. Had a caught for past 9 weeks but 3 docs said my lungs and breathing sound great. If its indigestion, is it ok to take reflux meds or tums or anything while taking so many other prescriptions?

Hi everyone,
I have had gerd for many years, for the last three weeks I had a pain in my left shoulder. It was difficult to sleep etc. I tried lots of different remedies, jonagold apples are good they have lots of pectin which settles your stomach, anyway the best thing I tried was pepto bismol, which you can get from a chemist. This may not work for everyone, but it took the pain away for me. It coats your digestive tract with a protective layer. After two doses the pain went, so it may be worth a try for some of you.:

I have had various problems over the past five weeks and as a result I am off work, I am getting pains in my abdomen, chest and right shoulder, after visiting my GP god knows how many times he finally sent me for an ultrasound scan because he thought I may have gallstones, It turns out I have Polyps in my gallbladder, if they get to big they can turn cancerous or even milignant, I am to see a surgeon very shortly to have my gallbladder removed, but while i have been waiting to see him I have been getting very sherp pains in my left shoulder which radiates down my left leg and also pains in my left side of my chest and also some amount of burping.
Everyone knows thier own bodies and if you are experiencing pains which you know are not right get it checked out and more importantly be persistant with your GP.
Good luck.
