Does anybody use slippery elm powder for GERD? I have a sore throat at the very beginning, but now my throat was burned and feel chest pain and back pain. My Doc prescribed nexium 40mg for 3 months. I have taken 2 weeks, but seems just little relief. Meanwhile, i bought some slippery elm powder for healing my throat. After the first time i used it , i found my phlegm color was rust. I was scared and stop using it today. But it's still rust color.
Is it normal or i have to see my PCP to check it?

ive used slippery elm

i do not recall it changing the color of my phlegm

i suggest having it checked by your doctor just to be safe

on the chance that color may be a symptom worth knowing

i used a major name brand supplement that had 400 mg of slippery elm bark powder in a caplet...i made a slurry out of it (mixed with a shot glass of warm water) and threw it back against the throat like a shot of whiskey, and let it dribble down the esophagus

yes it helped somewhat, like any other demulcent...as does marshmallow, DGL , and honey and ,

if you can get it prescribed, (if your doc thinks it appropriate) consider sucralfate! (carafate, etc)

but please do get the discoloration of your phlegm checked out

---

btw, it takes way longer than a couple of weeks on PPIs to heal the very vulnerable tissue at the back of the throat, and esp the vocal chords, and or soft palate etc if these structures are involved

if you are burning way up high sounds like you may have LPR (aka silent gerd) which takes longer to heal...sometimes several months

stick with the medication and eat many small meals each day...remembering water counts as part of the total volume of a meal so drink sparingly with each meal, and pump water after you have digested the previous meal, waiting for the water to pass before eating again

are you sleeping with you bed elevated 6 to 8 inches at the head....the entire bed must be inclined...extra pillows are counter productive...healing...or damage...at night can make or break your recuperation

best wishes....hang in there

I also have GERD due to the medicines I take for lupus. With GERD it is possible to get viral or fungal infection especially with low immune system. I had Candidiasis and was treated with Diflucan by the gastroenterologist who I see for this problem. I don't remember having rusty sputum but I was coughing a lot and throat was burning. It felt like cuts in my throat. The medicine worked. This is a problem that needs immediate attention. Good luck.

I have used Slippery elm lozenges and have also bought it loose in the tea section at the health food store. It is very nice brewed up with a cinnamon stick and ginger. Never had any issues with it.
