Will throat heal over time?

I was just wondering if the throat lining will heal over time.  I have had a sigficant decrease in my reflux since my doc put me on Prevacid however I still have the burning throat as if I reflux like I used to.  Does this ever go away or is it permanantly "burned" by the acid?

I don't know, dbab. I've had the burning throat for about 6 months. Didn't have heartburn until I took all those drugs the drs gave me for the burning throat which they said was due to acid coming up from the stomach and burning my throat. Since I stopped them all and suffered intense heartburn for a few weeks, I am gradually getting better. I'm only drinking spring water now and I think that has been what's making a difference also. They say antacids only make you worse in the long run and perhaps they're right.

my lump went away but came back after drinking a cup of tea and eating sponge and custard (and I thought I was cured) back to bland diet for me.

I haven't gone to a bland diet, Gina. But I don't eat deep fried or even fried stuff except for stir fries and a few eggs or pancakes every now and then. I have found thet grains and sugar give me heartburn also, so I have cut back drastically on them. This is a Glutenfree household so we have things baked from brown rice flour, bean flour or lentils on the occasions that we have baked goods. Mostly, we eat fruits and vergetables with meat, fish or poultry. Salmon is one of our favorites but is getting so expensive now that we shall soon have to go to something else.

Thanks to all for your responses. I think that I will try ginger. As far as a bland diet, I have been trying so hard to be really good about this but it is so hard for me. I was raised on a rich and spicy diet from my culture and it is really hard to eat bland for me. I know it would help me but it is just one of those things that is tough.

Since I am one who suffers almost exclusively in the throat my reading on the issue has revealed that it simply is more difficult to get the throat to heal if that is what's affected. The reason is the throat lining is not as capable of standing up to acid exposure as the lower esophagus. Therefore it takes very little exposure to make it hurt. The ppi's like Nexium do help with heartburn but they are not as effective against throat pain. Doctors tend to double or triple the ppi dose for those who have voice and throat trouble because they need the extra acid suppression. However, I took two Nexium a day for five months and it didn't help my throat at all. I have a strong suspicion, at least with me, that the ppi's lose a lot of effectiveness after two weeks. So now I take one Prevacid a day except when I go off of it for about two weeks so it will work again. Right now I am not taking it and as usual my symptoms actually improve a little for a while. My theory on this is the medication actually weakens your own acid defense-it is documented that it messes up your esphageal motility-and when I develop a tolerance again to the meds, I am producing more acid but my natural defense is still weakened due to the presence of the medication. So then I reflux worse than with no meds at all. So this is probably more information than you wanted but I hope this helps you to understand why the throat is so stubborn to heal.

 Yes there is light at the end of a the tunnel I was diagnosed with gerd and I thought I had a marshmallow stuck in my throat. I found if I talked to much (easy for me) or sang my throat would be terrible all week.  The bland diet I followed was porride and honey ginger ale (with out the gas) milk with honey a sandwich of white bread only with ham bland chicken and jacket pots.  But I am now cured and havent got gerd I eat everything now.  I am on Zoton tablets and drink spring water too!  Try it and let me know  ginat90@hotmail.com

Thanks karen, Yeah that sounds like me. Of course, I don't know why I didn't think of honey. Its nice to know that there is hope to get my throat back. Again thanks to everyone for your good advice and suggestions.

Hello All,

Just wanted to ask dbad about your throat problem. I have been having a lump feeling in my throat plus a feeling as if my throat is burned all over by acid.
My ENT examined my thorat with a mirror and thought it might be caused by LPR. I am now on prevacid 30mg X 2 and have been on this PPI for 3 weeks now. The burning feeling disappeared just got this lump feeling which is really truning me mad.
My question how long it took you to have this lump feeling to disappear.
Any feed back is much appreciated.
