I am a 41 year old female. Have been having chest pains for the last week. They are pretty much constant and are right in the center of my chest and radiating to the left. Also have pains between my shoulder blades and shortness of breath at night when lying down. Had blood work, EKG, stress test and all were normal to rule out anything cardiac. They are thinking GERD. Only really ever had heart burn when I was pregnant and I don't really have symptoms that seem like heartburn now. Just chest pain. They put me on Nexium but after taking for 3 days had an allergic reaction - hoarseness, sore throat, tongue swelling. Now not sure what to do. Scheduled for endoscopy but they can't get me in for two months. Way too scary to wait that long. Any suggestions?

I had your symptoms for years, not heart but it turned out to be esophageal spasms and cardio esophageal reflex. The spasms are the worst that your doc should prescribe a remedy. In my case it was peppermint for mild ones and .4 Nitrostat for the severe ones. Good Luck Craig

Floinnewyork,

I had your symptoms too. Mine began with a chest discomfort like a heavy pressure on the left side of my chest. I felt like I couldn't take a deep breath. I went on PPIs which didn't help. I ended up getting Lap Nissen which helped a lot. Not saying your case will end up like mine but there are others who had similar symptoms to you. I hope you find a resolve.

Thanks for your responses. Is your pain constant or does it come and go? My is fairly constant and does not appear to be triggered by eating.

Good Afternoon,

If you feel you may have gastritis please follow up with your Dr. as  tests to determine whether the bacterium H. pylori is present in your body would be helpful and can easily be treated with medication.

Also gallbladder disease can cause chest pain as well as other medical conditions.  Do not hesitate to see another GI physician if you don't feel better as waiting for 2 months when you symptomatic does feel like a long time.

Kindly,
Kitt

Bear 22 has a good answer. You can google cardioesophageal reflex, aka linked angina. Mine is triggered by certain foods like gelatin, maple syrup, pork, corn starch, plus wine, some meds. After keeping a food journal, I found the connection between by googling my foods with the term food allergy - it was sulfites!

My GI doc and my cardiologist hadn't heard of it, so they didn't believe me, but my allergist has seen it many times. I can count on having a problem if I eat processed foods, deli and several brands of fast foods, and anything at chain Italian restaurants.

The idea of allergy has crossed my mind as I have allergies to many things. None of them have ever caused chest pain before but I will start a food journal as well and see if I can make any connections. Thanks - Alcie

treacle - My pain also seems to diminish while I am at work but I think it is just because I am distracted. Not much time to worry when busy at work. A friend of mine calls this worrying "awfulizing" which I think is appropriate since it is generally thinking about every awful thing this pain could be.

stkitt - I will ask my doc about these conditions too. Thanks

Hi floinnewyork,

I am currently trying to figure out what is causing my chest pains as well. I have been suffering from them for about a year now. I am currently seeing my second GI doc, since the first didn't help me much. I saw him today in fact. He initially put me on 2 nexium a day, and moved me up to 3 a day, today. He was hoping the 2 a day would help with the pain, if in fact the pain is being caused by acid. My next step is to do the acid probe test, to find out how much acid if any is in my eosphagus. Once that is determined, then I think we will know a little more of what is going on. The chest pain is pretty much constant with me, daily, some days worse, some days not so bad, but always there. I have also been reading up on some other symptoms I have that fit with my GERD. I also have Barrets. I would suggest an upper GI once the heart and lungs, and possibly the gall bladder have all been ruled out. Might give you a little more insight to what you have going on. But my GI doc did say one thing today, only 4 things can cause chest pains, heart, lungs, GI, and lower back issues. So rule them out one at a time.

Welcome to the forum chance.

Have you been checked for hiatal hernia? Getting a scope might find it, but the best test is the barium swallow. When my stomach was stuck in my chest (giant paraesophageal hernia) I felt like I was having a heart attack. The pain lessened but never went away.

Do you get rapid heart beating with the chest pain? Is the pain constant all day long, or does it occur more after eating? If either is the case, you might keep a food journal to see if you can connect any specific food triggers.

The heart is connected to the esophagus and stomach by the vagus nerve, so it's not at all unheard of for one to trigger a reaction to the other - in either direction! "cardioesophageal reflex" aka "linked angina"

Hi Alcie,

Yes I have been through all the riggers of testings. Heart, Upper GI, chest xrays, gall bladder tests. Upper GI scope, showed Barrett's and Gastritis. Everything esle was normal. The chest pain is pretty constant, almost every day, all day, it's just the severity that varies. Sometimes it's worse than others. Doesn't matter what I eat, or when I eat. I wake up in the morning, it's there, I eat, it's there. So the next step this Doc wants to take is check my PH in my esophagus. To find out if it's the culprit. If not, he said probably not GI related. But the more I read, the more it makes sense that it probably is the acid, too many commom factors and symptoms that many others have just all combined.
