Just curious if other members have irritation issues with their tongues? Mine tends to get more burned feeling as I go throughout the day but is not as noticeable in the morning (I have 0% acid exposure when laying down so I think I more or less recharge over night). If a scalding hot coffee burned tongue, an hour later (no pain but noticeable sensation of having been burned) was a 10, the worst I usually feel is about a 3. It's not painful but it's very noticeable. It's not located anywhere specific on my tongue (as a coffee burn would be).

I also have the sour/acidic taste in my mouth most of the time, so I am thinking that explains it, but I am kind of surprised that I rarely read of tongue symptoms in the long list of GERD and LPR symptoms. Especially in the case of people who experience regurgitation into the mouth, whether it's food or just some acidic fluid. It would just make sense that if you can taste sour/acid, that will eventually wear on the tongue. Yet little to no mention of tongue issues.

If you do have tongue symptoms, I'd appreciate hearing what other symptoms you have (heartburn? or LPR with no heartburn?) and whether your tongue symptoms have any patterns that you've noticed.

Thanks.

Hmmm... Yes I have had a burnt tongue sort of syndrome. I've had it off and on over the last six months. At first it felt like all my teeth were too sharp and then my tongue became sore and I realised my teeth were fine!! I have anaemia so I thought perhaps it was that or a vitamin deficiency. However, one month ago I had to reduce my PPI due to some serious side effects, and guess what, the sore tongue stopped.

There are some common causes of sore tongue I can think of:-

1. Anaemia (PPIs reduce iron uptake)
2. Vitamin B deficiency (B12 deficiency is a possibility with GERD)
3. Dental problems e.g. Infection or a chipped tooth chafing the tongue
4. Oral thrush
5. Drug side effect

I felt like my tongue was burnt but it lasted for weeks and then spontaneously improved on lowering the PPI dose.

If yours doesn't clear up it may be worth asking your GP to take a look.

New stuff: GERD, Recurrent cystitis/Overactive bladder
Lifelong stuff: Food allergies/intolerance, eczema, asthma

Thanks MMM. I have been on a double dose of Omeprazole. I do remember back, before I was using any acid blocker of any kind, that I would occasionally get the same burning tongue sensation.. it seems to be more frequent now that my primary complaint (tight throat) has been replaced by my new complaint of bitter taste.

Saw the ENT today, and the back of my tongue had a yeast infection -- good call MMM. I am taking diflucan now for 21 days. The doc said it probably caused the burning tongue, and I am holding out hope that it also caused the bitter taste.

One other possible explanation would be Sjögren's Syndrome. It is an autoimmune disease causing the white blood cells to attack the salivary glands and tear ducts, among other things. I started out with a sensation of my tongue being on fire. It spread to the inside of my mouth around my lips, etc. I would get sores inside my mouth. Eventually I noticed dry eyes -- couldn't produce tears, etc. See www.sjogrens.org for more info.
