Hi if somebody can answer this please do its driving me crazy thinking I'm gonna die everyday. First I'm 22 years old and am overweight I have been to the er several times so far this year and I have a primary care doctor who I see and he says I have herd but what I have found online is that gerd doesn't cause pain in your arms neck back so on I haven't seen a gastro yet I'm not sure if my medical threw dshs will cover one but it seems day after I eat or get done doing something physical I get weird pains in my right arm and sometimes left and chest pains that happen on my left side but more so on my right side a couple inches over from the center of my chest to right above ky breast bone my doctor also says it is anxiety and depression. My symptoms are palpitaions, chest fluttering, arm pain, chest pain, back pain, shoulder pain, stiff neck with pain, taste of acid or metallic taste in my mouth when I wake up and threw out the day, food washing back up,chest tighness, and many others my last er visit they did an ultra sound for a blood clot and checked my liver enzymes and checked my heart for any damage and my liver came back fine and they said my heart hasn't had any damage done to it. Sorry for all The talking I'm just not sure if it is ky heart even know they said there is no damage to it. But last night it started scaring me after I was runnin around and stuff and when I got home my heart beat was ranging from 92 to 114 and I will say I slipt becouse of all of the stress and stuff and I smoked weed last night so I'm not sure if that could be the cause but it seemed to never do anything when I smoked it. Please help its driving me crazy.

Some of those symptoms such as chest pains and tightness sound like they could be GERD. I would see a GI
Diagnosed GERD, no other medical conditions (this one is enough)

I think i have had some of my worst muscle aches/neck pains after really bad heartburn nights/episodes. I think my whole body just tenses up so bad during a flare-up that you don't even realize how bad until sometimes the day after. I do get upper back pain with my heartburn too but sometimes you feel as if you have been hit by a bus afterwards!

First I would like to say I have had EVERY single one of your symptoms. Unfortunately I am still trying to figure this out. I do have GERD, was diagnosed 10 years ago. I am also new to this site, thank goodness I found it I feel better already. It does help so much to know you are not alone. I make my appt. for a Endoscopy tomorrow. I do also have anxiety and deal with the same exact issues you are.. Please try to relax, I know it sound rediculous and could even be frustrating because it was for me. I have only recently somewhat gotten my anxiety/panic under control. just in the last 2 weeks have I been feeling new symptoms. Dizziness and nausea, a lot. These are sending me into panic, therefor making my quality of life as it was when I first started having anxiety/panic. Anyways, to answer your question from my point of view, yes. I have back pain not related to any incident, joint issues ect and believe that anxiety attributes a lot to it. As far as GERD, I have chest joint pain and into my neck. Please keep us updated and I will also. Peace and love

Your pains sound pretty much "normal" to me. I have also had these pains, matter of fact I am having some as we speak. I have had pain in my chest so bad that I thought I was having a heart attack. I get pretty bad muscle cramps in my back, side and chest area from time to time. I am actually glad to hear that someone else has those to because I have actually been afraid to mention these to my doctor because I am so tired of all the tests that come back normal. I can also tell you, that for at least, when these pains or GERD flare ups happen my anxiety seems to shoot up because I worry to much and that tends to make things worse and all I want to do is lay down or find a quiet place to hide for a while.
But if you have not been to a GI doc you really need to go. They can set you up on a diet and or meds that will help take the edge off and slow down the internal damage the acid is doing.

I am so glad I found this site!
I'm 24 years old and for the past 2 years I have had countless GERD attacks. I have had so many tests done and seen so many doctors because of the fear of heart problems. Every test came back normal and I felt so lost because I knew something was wrong.
Last night I had another episode, with all the symptoms; chest burning, throat sore, restlessness, and a lot of pain!
The morning after I had some chest discomfort, it felt like it was sore. And my right arm and right foot/ankle are achy. This is the first time I've had the achy joints though, is this normal?
As I said, I'm 24. Am 120pounds.

I actually just got back from urgent care tonight because symptoms were so bad. I was put on privacid. I'm hoping this helps.

I also think I've had way more joint/stifness issues while on PPIs. Anyone know of any journals or evidence that this is a side effect? I tried a quick search the other day and didn't find much, just a laundry list of all the possible side effects among them joint pain.

Hey fellow GERD sufferers.
I have been on Prevacid twice a day and really notice my muscles are very achy! This Prevacid really seems to work but my arms hurt!
Anyone else?

I feel like I was hit by a bus. This feelings seems to come and go through out my day. Once I get up and start moving I get exhausted quick. It's been about about 1 week since my GERD attack. My muscles are achy and it aches under my collar bones on both sides.
Has anyone experienced this??? How long is this going to last?

This may be six months later, but I never thought the pills might be causing all the body pain stiffness. That could be interesting. For the first guy, I would not sweat it too much. An ER doc, who made much sense, said if you have something that flares and subsides, the possibilities of you dying from it are unbelievably rare. Makes sense. I bet money anxieties kick up when you are having the GERD troubles. Maybe see if you can take short term, ativan or longer term cymbalta from a doc. It may give you a break and you may just be freaked from the interior actions of your body and not know it. You may just need to "trick" your mind to give your physical body a break. I know it sounds silly, but try Yoga too. seriously, much of life has to do with how you breathe and how you are thinking. Also, really record as best you can what foods you have eaten for the day and when, and what combinations. You may be able to control flares. Thanks for this post, I have the exact same things- :)

I am 42 and living with this gerd mess every day as the rest of you. The only thing I am experiencing that no one else has mentioned is I often have pains in my lower abdomen sometimes extremely low and extremely painful. I am currently taking Pantoprazole which was prescribed to me by the cardiologist before I actually had an endoscopy with the GI specialist. The GI do recommended I stay on this for 6 months and report back. Well I am 4 months in and extreme symptoms are now coming back. Is there any food or drink the rest of you found to cause flare up? This is getting a bit ridiculous!

Hi my daughter has recently been diagnosed with gurd, she was driving one day and she suddenly got disoriented ,she couldn't see ,her heart was beating fast ,her chest felt heavy,  she thought she was having a heart attack,  she pulled over and called and ambulance.  the weeks following that she felt like she couldn't breathe her throat felt swollen, her body ached, her hands began swelling and felt numb and tingly then she got a bad sinus infection, she was miserable  she didn't know what was happening to her, she did research and found she had gurd, she now take prescribed meds and she is doing good.  sometimes docs don't know whats wrong with you sometimes it pays to research for yourself

Since my last post in January things have changed for me substantially in a very positive way. From doing endless research and taking matters into my own hands I have almost completely rid myself of the abdominal pains and my reflux situation now seems to be under control. Basically it has involved an extreme change in diet which has not at all been easy to do at 42. No more eating after 7pm! Fruits, vegetables and water is now my main fuel and almost completely cut out the caffeine. Yes, I have slipped a few times and it was noticeable when I have. I had read that leafy vegetables could help that awful acid reflux so I decided to give it shot so I could stop taking so many antacids. I now eat salads with lots of baby leaf spinach and a tiny bit of oil and vinegar dressing for dinner at least every other day. I still eat meats but more grilled or baked fish and chicken than I have ever eaten. This may not be easy to stick to but it has been more than worth it for me. Also the 11 pounds I have lost since roughly February has not hurt me one bit!

avocados, cucumbers, leaf spinach, beets (not great), lintels, apples, bananas, honeydew melon

Hope this can help someone.

I'm slightly underweight I just wish I knew what triggers these episodes
Shoulder pressure is pretty annoying it's like your whole body's being weighed to the ground
Does anyone else take omprazole ?

Looking for answers. Had my gall bladder out almost 8 years ago due to gallstones and have been in pain ever since. Have weeks where I feel fine and then all of a sudden I get severe stomach & chest pains which have sent me to the ER a few times. Also get numbness in my arms and legs and burning pain in my back. Have had an upper GI, endoscopy, cat scans, ultrasounds, etc. Diagnosed with severe acid reflux and a slow digestive tract. Pain is worse than gallbladder pain. When I end up in the ER, they give me a GI cocktail which usually takes the pain away. EKG's are always normal as well as blood work. Constantly feel nauseous and bloated. Have gained 25 pounds since gallbladder surgery. I take Prilosec once a day, which they upped this week to 2X a day. Also take otc heartburn medicines like Pepto and Mylanta when things get bad. Have had a cardiac workup with stress tests and worn halter monitor for a day. All normal. Have a digestive tract test scheduled for next week where you eat a small meal and they watch how things progress through your digestive tract. Also have another endoscopy and colonoscopy scheduled this month. I also have explosive bowel movements usually after I eat and have also had H-pylori in the past. Wondering if I ever got rid of it. Started an antibiotic treatment for it but was allergic to one of the meds so they stopped it. I feel horrible all of the time. Wondering if anyone has any ideas. I am 50 years old, non-smoker, light drinker, usually wine, but can't even take that anymore due to heartburn and acid reflux. Need answers!

I also just recently got diagnosed with GERD and experience many weird symptoms. I had to be put on antidepressants and anxiety medication because my symptoms are just too much for me. I'm seeing a Dr almost every week trying to figure if its just GERD or something more.

I get joint pains, loss of sensation, neck stiffness, feet and hands hurt. All my blood work comes back fine, MRI checks out, don't have diabetes. I think stress is just eating me alive. I have gone most of my life without ever getting sick. I got chest pain then they did an xray and said it was bronchitis.

Add me to your friend's list if you wanna keep updated or whatever this website does to keep in touch!

I have a lot of the same. I noticed in the last week I've had bad GERD flareups, where I get what I call "fake heart attacks" (bad chest and abdominal pain, sometimes with tingling in the arms) and feel nauseated after eating. What's new this time is I almost feel like I have a mild flu, with body aches in my feet and hands and shoulders a generalized feeling that I'm an arthritic 80 instead of an otherwise healthy 35.

I've beeb experiencing alot of the same symptoms. It's crazy because I am only ninteen. It frustrates me because I can rarely eat what I want. I often feel sick and achy. I get nauseous sometimes and gerd seems to make my migraibes worse. It makes them so severe that I get dizzy. I sometimes get ringing in my ears and a sore throat. It also has caused me to get anxiety and panic attacks. I feel too young to have to be dealing with some of these issues...

Hi! Anyone still active on this thread? I was looking around google because I am also experiencing symptoms of gerd.. Shortness of breath, cough, and recently lots of muscle pain. I got so worried when my right back shoulder got painful. Sometimes the pain runs upper right on my shoulders, right arms, and even hands. Often I felt pain on the left side, but more on the right. It is not really painful, but it bothered me alot. I was told by my doctor who is a Pulmonologist that I don't have a problem with my lungs. The coughing and shortness of breath might be a cause of GERD. As of now, I stopped coughing a lot, my breathing is ok. But I have a lot of muscle pain. How long does the pain last? And it is a sign that my gerd is severe??? Thanks a lot

Well, I think all these posts have described many of my incidences. I went to a GI doc and had an endoscopy which confirmed that I had GERD. Mine was at the point of having a swollen stomach and esophagus. It felt pretty terrible. I went on omeprazole for almost a year and it worked well at killing the acid. I had to go off it though because it cased me calcium deficiency which started some other issues. If you go on a PPI make sure you ask you doc about calcium and magnesium deficiency and possibly see if they think you should be supplementing. Not everyone is the same, but I definitely had a problem with it. I also have had gerd flare ups now that I'm off the PPI, but I am supplementing and am beginning to take another shorter acting medication at night at my docs direction. If you have pain, you need to see the GI doc, and figure it out with them. For me when it went from just acid in my throat to pain in my chest and fatigue and etc etc according to all that you have said, that was when I had to get fixed. Diet change helps me a lot but I still need some help.

My neck sometimes hurts on both sides, almost like it's bruised. When I went to my doctor, he said that it could sometimes happen with GERD sufferers.
