Hello everyone. I am new to the site here but was looking to gain some insight as I have become frustrated with doctors. I am 27 years old. Lately I have been having chronic shortness of breath along with some chest pains. I also seem to get a rapid heartbeat upon exertion.  I have had severe anxiety problems in the past and have also been going through a lot of stress lately. I went to my doctor and he performed and EKG which came back normal. He suggested that gerd could be causing the chest pain and that the chest pain was triggering anxiety causeing the increased heart rate and shortness of breath. Although I have read on forums here that the shortness of breath could be caused by gerd itself. Not sure if the heart rate could be as well.  I also had a somewhat high blood pressure when I went (140/100) but my doctor didnt think much of it as he chalked it up to the fact that my anxiety was high at the time. My blood pressure is usually good whenever I go.

I have been diagnosed with very mild gerd in the past after and upper GI but it was never bad enough to the point where it drastically effected how I felt and I never took medication for it.  If anybody on here has any insight as to if it could be gerd causing all these symptoms I have been experiencing I would greatly appreciate any info or advice. These are all very scary symptoms to me and I would love to get the opinion of somebody who has been through this before. Thanks in advance for anybody who can help me.

Mikey G,

I had the same symptoms over the past 5 years years...and really became worse over the past 8 months. Come to find out I had a very large para esophogeal hernia. My stomach, bowel and half my pancreas had moved into my chest cavity through a holenin my diaphragm. Shortness of breath, anxiety, loss of appetite and finally pain in lower abdomen sent to my primary care provider. CT Scan and Endoscope revealed what was going on. During those years I had pain in my chest that sent me to doctors .. 3 times ...3 EKG's and my heart is fine.
Doctors said it was anxiety. I was instructed to reduce stress, delegate and was prescribed Xanax.

I'm 3 weeks post op...hernia repair and nissen fundo. Still recovering....

Best of Luck..

Thanks for the reply. I did have an upper GI conducted in November of last year as well as a ct scan of the abdomen earlier in the year. Both came back normal with the exception of mild GERD showing in the upper GI. so that leads me to believe that this may not be the case for me. Still I will keep it under consideration. Thanks again for the info. My biggest concern is that I'm not going to have a heart attack or any significant lung disease. the normal EKG results have at least, nerves a little bit in regards to a potential heart attack. I still worry about my lungs tho. I have never smoked a cigarette in my life and don't drink alcohol so I do not know why I would have something seriously wrong with them at such a young age.

Mikey,

Just wanted to tell you that you're not alone. I've experienced some combination of chest pain, heartbeat, and shortness of breath in the past. I've made a couple of trips to the ER thinking it's a heart attack, get tests, etc., only to figure out it was mostly anxiety/panic attack. GERD was definitely in the mix too for me.

Lately, I've been experiencing shortness of breath. Went to a lung doctor and got tests: pulmonary function, CTs, etc., and they all looked good. A few months before, I had taken an echo stress test and a cardiac calcium scoring test. Both results looked good. I'm in the process of doing some other tests though I think I know what the results are going to be: probably OK. I guess it's a reassurance thing.

What I'm trying to say is, if you talk to your doctor and end up taking tests, and find that your lungs/heart are OK, then you have to just try to accept that. Yah, it could be GERD. If so, there's medical and surgical options for GERD (to discuss with your doctor), plus some other things like diet, lifestyle changes etc. that you can do to keep reflux in check, if indeed it's reflux. Could be anxiety too--there's meditation, breathing exercises, and other things you can do for that too. (For me, it's a little of both).

You're trying to figure out where the problem is in your body. Hey I am too. Though, try not to worry about the parts of your body like the heart, if it's been ruled out. I say this to you because I'm trying to remind myself, too! Good luck brother!
