I tried the DGL licorice yesterday.  I have to say that it helped greatly with my supper.  I had no 'acid leaks' at all and was quite pleased with that.  I took it again before breakfast, skipping my Prilosec today as I'd rather use natural stuff, but had problems with wash back about an hour or so after breakfast.  I think, though, that it isn't actually acid I am tasting in my throat but rather it's bile.  Does this make sense?  And, how long does it take for DGL to work?  Will it get that bile out of my throat?

Although it didn't taste very good, it wasn't that bad and if it works, who cares?

If you go back and do research on this site, you will get all the answers you want as to how DGL worked for me and others. IT TOOK ME ONE MONTH! AND I ONLY HAD GERD SYMPTOMS FOR 1 MONTH BEFORE THAT.

I don't understand why all of you want IMMEDIATE results! I cured my GERD only with DGL licorice and sleeping on my left side and eating alkaline food.

If your symptoms are bad and you've had them for a long time, how can you possibly want them to go away immediately! Give yourselves a few months at least, but you have to work at it. Don't eat the foods that bother you and don't drink alcohol, caffeine etc.

Keep a food diary and work at getting better. I didn't feel well the whole month I was taking the DGL but kept it up, I started feeling better a little at a time. By the end of the month I had healed my esophagus.

I hope you are all DISSOLVING IT SLOWLY IN YOUR MOUTH WITH SALIVA 20 MINUTES BEFORE YOU EAT AND AREN'T DRINKING ANYTHING UNTIL AFTER YOU EAT.
Think about it.....you are coating your esophagus so that the food you eat (and hopefully you are eating correct food) doesn't do more damage to it going down!

DANIE,

I wasn't looking for immediate results.  I was simply asking how long it takes DGL to work; fair question, don't you think?  My symptoms are NOT bad and I haven't had GERD for that long, hence, all my questions.  Since you seem to be one of the more informed on the board regarding DGL, you seemed like the right person to ask.  I will refrain from doing so in the future if you would rather I didn't.

Tummytuck,

I still say that one should research back on this site for information. That's how I got all my info. I checked back and read everything posted.

I wasn't necessarily addressing you, just in general, I posted my information sooooo many times and feel that so many people just don't want to do the work that it takes to get over GERD.

I posted EVERYTHING I did about DGL and more.....as you can see it was slightly helpful to you pretty quickly so why not continue it.
Read the postings I just made from Dr. Weil's site, he's a medical doctor.

By the way, what did you eat for breakfast? Since the DGL didn't help you.....
Did you dissolve 2 tablets in your mouth or only one?

DANIE, I tried to look back on this site for more info on DGL and I only retrieved about 20 posts with very little information in them. I did read Dr. Weil's info which was encouraging. I know of him; he's fairly well respected. The DGL worked very well for me last night but didn't this morning. I had a bowl of cereal - pretty inocuous, I thought. I chewed the tablets but didn't let them dissolve which I will do the next time. I didn't take my Prilosec today so that might be why I had more of a burn in my throat this morning. I'm still not sure whether to continue with the Prilosec or not. I would rather go with the DGL alone since I have an aversion to taking chemicals but I will do what works best. What I now need to research is what constitutes an alkaline diet.
I am still very new at all of this and so am trying to strike some sort of balance.

Tummytuck,
If you look back at my postings, you will see alot of information on alkaline foods. Just do a SEARCH SITE (on the very top of the page), type in DANIE to see most of my postings or type in Alkaline to see other postings too.

Here is a link for you that I have already posted.

You will have to search back to my postings for more specific information. Just because a food is alkaline it doesn't make it good for someone with GERD. For example, lemon is very alkaline IN THE STOMACH, but should not be used by people with a damaged esophagus. It will burn going down, just like apple cider vinegar would. You can put very little in a BIG glass of water if you want to try it. Do not drink before going to sleep though and don't eat anything at least 3 hrs before. Take the DGL before going to sleep - DISSOLVE SLOWLY IN MOUTH, much better than chewing and swallowing. Give it time to slowly coat the esophagus.
