If taken in high amounts. I have been taking them since this started. I had acid reflux and decided to take them. That is when everything got worse for me and I've gone down heal so badly.

I just read this on another site.

BIFIDOBACTERIUM BIFIDUM/LACTIS (BB-12)

Bifidobacterium bifidum (recently identified as B. lactis) is the most prominent microorganism strain setting up residence and implanting itself in the lining of the large intestine. B. bifidum is known for producing acetic and lactic acids, which lowers the pH. (increases the acidity) of the intestine.

This ingrediant is in the pearls I was taking! Causes more acid!!!!!!!! So, I stopped it as of today and I think after a week of resting my digestive system I will report back to say if it has helped or not.

If so I will be very pissed.

Edit: Hello Halls, please post your reference when you reference an article or text book, etc.  Thank you. It helps the members know where the info is coming from.

I don't understand.  Doctors say to take it, so how can it really cause that?

Where did you read about the probiotics having an adverse effect on people like us.
I've had a pretty rough time the last couple months wich coincides with me taking more probiotic pearls (among other things). I think I might take a break from them too and see what happens. Let me know how you do.

What you're saying frustrates me so much.  Because I have vigorous GERD, AND a colon problem (in addition to a motility problem in my esophagus). So I don't know what to do because I was told to take probiotics!!!

I was told to take probiotics as well, but I have been in bad shape since I started taking them a few months ago. I asked on another board I go to and a gal there told me this information and she said she got it from her doctor, and from her own research. She says once she stopped taking anything her digestive system got better, but that she has massive digestive problems/heartburn while on them.

Anyhow, when this started for me I wasn't taking anything and I was able to deal with it and it wasn't so bad. It got worse after I started the probiotics. I have stopped as of yesterday, but I think it will take some time for me to notice if it gets any better.

My GI doctor told me that if you only have acid reflux, taking a PPI works easily, like a charm.  I have slow movement in my esophagus and he said that that is why my reflux is so uncontrollable.

So, for those of you who also have such a tough time curing your reflux, could it be that you also have a motility problem???

Maybe you should get a manometry done (not that the findings would help you much, but at least you might know what is going on).

Halls, the stress causes acid reflux.  I think that we are all stressed because we are sick.  So it's a vicious cycle.

Hi friendly gal,
I posted to you earlier today, but for some reason it isnt appearing on this trhead.
I do not know if I have a motility problem, but I think I do know how you are feeling.
I am sooo sick of feeling like this.  This disease is consuming my life.  I am so tired of feeling sick, I want my life back, but I dont know if that is possible.
I have had gerds for at least a year now.  I also have esophageal spasms and throat spasms.  I also have that lump in throat feeling and I feel like im strangling sometimes.  about a month ago, i developeed a new symptom and that is that my swallowing reflex isnt working properly.  I have been on protonix for a year, with some satisfaction, but not completely.  After the swallowing symptoms occured i went to dr and she sent me for barrium upper gi which came back as full reflex, including upper sphincter and lower sphincter, ,gastritis and hiatal hernia.  She put me on zoloft for anxixety and now im on nexium, which i havent noticed any change with that med at all so far.  I still have some swallowing prolems although it susided for awhile, but it seems to be back again.  Dr said it from the acid affecting the tissues in my throat.  It freaks me out like u wouldnt believe when it happens, and now Im afraqid to even attempt to eat.  My ears are plugged alot too...Such strange symptoms sometimes, but they all are quite scarey..and cause me such anxiety.  I was so afraid i had a tumor and that is why i couldnt swallow, but the upper gi proved that to be wong, thank god...Yet, still when it happens, i do freak out.  Which in turn makes me more anxious and doesnt help my condition at all...Anyways, i know uve gone thru alot too, and just waanted to touch base with you...misery loves company and all!  Thanx for listening,
rose

Rose, as much as it is hard, we need to tell ourselves to relax and that this will go away soon.

Being miserable doesn't help it...Try to remember what it feels like to be healthy.  Take some yoga, do some meditation, get a massage or two...Do whatever it takes to relax...

I work out all the time, and try to keep busy. Thankfully school starts next week for my boys and I plan to volunteer daily if I can. I'm going to try to keep myself so busy I don't have time for anxiety or stress!

Sounds great, Halls.  Looks like you're doing better than me.  I can't work out all the time because the pain in my chest is debilitating.  But, I know that I have to try to destress.  I am thinking to take some medicine for the pain??

I cant exercise either...I have a hard time just doing the simple things like cleaning my house.  Everytime I bend down, I feel everything pouring out of my stomach.
I cant eat...Funny, I never realized how "social" eatting was.  Its not just for nourishment.
I am trying to relax, but the swallowng problem causes me a great deal of stress...and then the stress causes my condition to get worse.  Its a vicious circle.
I have to hope that somehow I will heal, and then the swelling in my throat will go down and then Ill be able to swallow again...Thats my hope anyways.

YankeeRose, have you tried taking antispastic medication or anti-anxiety meds to relax the muscles in your throat?

Yes...the doctor put me on zoloft hoping to ease the spasms.  Ive been on it about a month.  I think it is helping a bit.
Everything I have read about LPR, suggests taking 2 doses of ppi, but my doctor doesnt think that is necessary, so I am on nexium one time a day.  I dont agree with her, and would love to double the dosage, however, my insurance wont pay for the nexium, and she gave me a one months supply, so if i would double up on it, Ill be done before my month is up!
I do have some protonix left, I wonder if i could take the protonix once a day and the nexium once a day, or if it wouldnt be a good idea to mix them.

I have no idea about mixing...I'm on 2 prevacids a day and this hasn't helped me at all.  I never tried an antispasmoid (heheh, i'm just calling it that), or an anti-anxiety for long-term.  maybe i'll try...

Do you have any problems swallowing?  I think if that would go away, I would feel better emotioanlly.  It takes a toll on me psycologically i think.

I have constant pain in my chest as well and back, but I force myself to work out regardless. Of course my pain could be much less than the both of yours seeing neither of you can work out with this awful stuff.

When I bend down to the reflux comes into my chest as well. I don't feel like it is burning so much as I do actual pain after it happens. I swear, this reflux stuff is a killer!

Yes, I have problems with swallowing.  Other than the terrible chest pains that I have, I think I have pernicious anemia from taking PPIs for so long (malabsorption of B12). That makes me extra tired so it's hard to work out.  I'll be tested for this soon.

People......try DGL licorice.....see all my postings on this. It cured me and has helped everyone that I know that had GERD, minor symptoms and very bad symptoms.
People that were taking drugs for years are off and managing well with DGL licorice before meals.
I'm not going into everything again since I did post a zillion times, do a search with DANIE.
DGL does not cause high blood pressure as regular black licorice does.
You have to buy the DGL one...pills do not work. You dissolve 2-3 (I was even using 4 at the beginning) in your mouth with your saliva before every meal. You have to eat food that will not cause more acid.....ALKALINE....look up my many postings on this also.
If this doesn't work for you - check every medication/drug/vitamin for possible gastro causes.
I was taking ADVIL for pain in my back (I'm not on any medicines) and would take it primarily at night...apparently Advil has to be taken at least 1/2 hr before you lie down or it causes GERD symptoms, as does aspirin!!!
Imagine finding that out...that Advil caused my GERD.
Take care and I hope this posting helps at least someone. I check in once in a while to see if I can help.

Hi Danie,
Thanx for your post and suggestions.  I have tried the dgl licorice, and it does help somewhat wth the heartburn, however, both my upper esophageal sphincter and lower esophageal sphincter does not work properly, and it is always leaking up into my esophagus and my throat area.  I may give it another try though.  At this point, I dont have anything to lose.

I can't stand the taste of the DGL licorice and start to gag when it is in my mouth.
