Hi
Need knowledge of Gerd

This is my story of my symptoms..........I was pregnant for the past 2 years, well in my 2nd pregnancy when i was 5 months I had a terrible burning sensation in my throat & in between my shoulder blades. The doctor had an idea it was acid reflux but because i was pregnant there was nothing they could do, she said try tums. Now my baby is 4 & half months old I have had lots of test done such as chest xray which was normal, Liver & Gallbladder xray which was normal. A couple of weeks ago I had an Edoscope which was not so normal, they found, Gastric Antrum - Inflammation, Incisura of the stomach - Inflammation, Gastric Cardia - lots of acid they did suggest Barretts esophagus but the biospies came back no barretts just said Relux changes. The doctor prescribed me prilosec & said take twice a day.........well no change after 8 days, I am at my wits end all day pain, the good thing is I do not have heart burn, I never get disturbed sleep apart from the kids lol.

I use to drink untold diet coke, i have give that up, the worst is I do smoke I know I really need to give up, but I have had a lot of stress ect: Got married, moved to the USA but I miss my family terribly in London.

Does stress cause Gerd?

Any body know off anything that would help, I would love to know........btw I did a little surfing & ppl did say Apple vinegar & Apple juice......Well never again, made it feel much worst.

Many Thank

Hello Red, and welcome to healingwell. I am sorry you are suffering, but I assure you that you have come to the right place for information, and support!

I first want to say congrats on the baby...I love kids!

Ok, to answer your question, does stress cause GERD?

There is no evidence that stress actually causes the disorder, but investigators have long believed that stress is a major factor in worsening the symptoms of GERD. This is supported by a Gallup poll done that found 64% of people with heartburn reporting a worsening of their symptoms when subjected to stress.

I want to suggest you read about how to minimize your GERD symptoms. It is a post I did, and I will bring it up to the top for you. Please read it, and see if anything can be of use to you.

Also, when it comes to Prilosec, are you aware that it is best to be taken before meals? And, are you prescribed Prilosec, or using OTC?

I am sorry you are missing your family. I am also sorry you are dealing with so much stress. Stress can do a number on your body.

Please, stick around, read old posts, and ask questions whenever you want. I look forward to getting to know you more, and don't hesitate to tell me if you need anything else.

Again, welcome to healingwell!

Hi Tammy

I was prescribed prilosec, but when i look on the box it says OTC. To be honest I had 2 kids in a matter of 2 years & though both pregnancies I actually lost weight overall I have lost 40lb from start to finish, I have totally no appetite & force myself to eat. To be honest i needed to lose the weight. What I dont understand sometimes I weez is this normal with gerd?. The other thing i really dont understand is before I fell pregnant I never experienced any acid of such. I am so scared of getting Barretts as the doctor must think its close to even suggest it, luckily for me they said no Barretts, but i am so worried if i cant get this under control it will get there.

Thankyou for your reply, its nice to know there are ppl that know more about the situation, even tho most are going through the same pain which is not good.

Thanks again
RED

You are so welcome Red...anything to help!

Wheezing can accompany GERD, indeed.

Also, heartburn and such can come along with pregnancy, so that isn't uncommon.  When I was pregnant, I had terrible heartburn.  I had the acid in my throat and in my stomach, and the whole 9 yards.  I wouldn't let that concern you at all.

Don't worry yourself with the Barretts, just keep up with your doctor, and you will be fine.  I am NOT saying you won't get it, but I am saying it isn't worth it to worry yourself over.  And, even if you do get Barretts, you only have a small increase in chances on getting esophageal cancer.

I'd like you to take a moment and click the following link, and read a little bit about barretts...OK?

The above will educate you a bit on Barrett's Esophagus.  I just don't want you to over worry the situation, ya know?

Again, wishing you all the best...and feel free to pop in for help anytime!

Hi Red,

GERD hit me pretty hard two years ago.  However, I have delt with it quite well with a combination of herbal medication, diet, and just paying attention to what impacts my body.

For me I take enzymes, candida Rid pills, and a probiotic as my main mainstay that helped me get rid of GERD.  Now I rarely have anything except for an occassional small heartburn.  That is even occassional when I drink coffee or have spicy food.

Let me tell you straight out doctors do not know everything.  Prilosec only deals with the symptoms and not the cause of GERD.  After reading so much about what really causes GERD I have come to a conclusion it is a many things.  It is the Western Diet that is more acidic than alkaline.  It is the fact that we treat our foods with antibotics which helps to kill the good bacteria on our intestine and causes fungus overgrowth in our intestine, we do not chew our food well, we eat a lot of protien (which wears out our enzymes that helps break down food), along with our huge carb and surgar intake (which helps feed the fugus overgrowth).

Let me just say we are damaging our bodies with this.  Therefore, there is no one pill quick cure.  It takes time to heal from anything because over time (with those habits) we have hurt our body.  Only now our body is saying "ENOUGH!" do something.  That means doing some alternative therapy research on this (don't take my word for it) and allowing the herbal treatment time to help.  It doesn't happen over night.  In the west we want INSTANT gratification and relief, but that isn't necessarily a cure.

I hope that helps.

-Ted.

Thankyou so much for your replies.

Ted I think you do have a point, I was looking on a list of Alkaline foods but to be honest might as well just become a vegetarian & if there is a lot of ppl like me veggies yuk rather get the vitimans from tablets personally. And as for the western diet, I have only been living in USA for 2 years yes eating habits are slightly different from the UK, but I have never been a fatty & spicy food eater still coming to terms with the food differences. I think my main cause of this was diet coke which i drank like it was water, I have now give this up & drink lots of water instead, also I smoke & i am working on trying to give up. I will do some research on this, I have only really suffered with Gerd for eight months now but feels like I dont no how i felt before as i dont seem to get any relief unless I am asleep.

Thankyou have a great day

RED

Well Red, I do hope you can find the information you need and the support as well. This is a great place to be.

As for quitting smoking, you could try the gums, or the patch, or the prescription drug Chantix, which I have heard wonderful things about, or of course, depending on your will power, cold turkey. Quitting smoking will of course help some with what you are feeling.

Please, do keep us updated on how you are doing!!!

I tried chantix, in fact i still have some left, cant say they did anything for me. I really should find it easy to give up smoking cause this gerd gives me a constant sore throat & burning in between the shoulder blades. Still dont really get heartburn like everyone else, this is why I am baffled by the whole gerd situation, sometimes I feel no one has my symptoms who has gerd....I know the endoscope said i have it but would this be symptoms of gerd or something different. I am on my nineth day of prilosec twice a day & no movement in the pain. The only good thing is I dont suffer of a night which is good for me but most do suffer of a night just cant understand. Think i will stick the tablets out another 2 weeks if they dont work book another appointment with my GI.

Thanks
RED

No problem Red...and I just want to assure you that not all GERD sufferers will have heartburn, so don't let that confuse you.

Keep us posted on how things are going for you...I am interested in hearing how it all goes!

Wishing you all the best!
