Hi All,
You have picked a great forum for your questions. There are lots of us out there who have been through this problem.
I had Gerd and a hernia. I never had heartburn but a chronic cough. My cough got so bad that my blood pressure went through the roof. My GI doctor didn't think that it was gerd causing the cough because I didn't have heartburn. Finally I told him something had to be done and saw a bariatric surgeon. Then my GI doctor ordered all the tests, 24-hour ph, swallow test and stomach empting etc. The 24-hour ph showed that i coughed when I had reflux.
I would cough so hard that I would spit up and loose my breath, wake up at night and have to sit in a chair.
I had the Nissen done in Oct of 2008. I read everything I could on the surgery and followed instructions completely. Like only eating a 1/2 cup at a time and liquids (oatmeal is considered liquid, but not clear liquid) I ate every 2 hours and sometimes even every hour but made sure I didn't eat over 1/2 cup. The one time I ate a cup I had all the classic complaints of pain in the stomach and shoulder.
Because I did not eat anything but liquids for the first 2 weeks I never felt like something was stuck. Also, no cabinated drinks for at least 8 weeks after surgery and don't drink through a straw for that long.
I still have an allergy cough but it is 100% better and I never through up or loose my breath.
I do think I will have allergy testing next.
My advice if you go that route is to find a bariatric surgeon that does laproscopy. But most important for this surgery find a bariatric specialist.
Best of luck to all of you
