I am brand new to this board - I have been on the iVillage children's allergy boards for a while, but I have a question for people with lots of lifetime experiences with allergies...

My DD is 6, has severe dry skin and eczema and is allergic to peanuts, sesame, grass, cats and mold. She has always battled allergies, but has been getting hives more and more frequently. Her first hive reaction was to cats (and has had about a dozen total) but today she got hives from using sunscreen (I think - all arrows point to sunscreen).

My question is this:
How do you all feel about "alternative" and/or "holistic" medicine to treat allergies and eczema?

I am leaning toward this b/c her pediatrician seems clueless about hives (said she thought it might be a virus - NOT), and her allergist acted surprised when I mentioned a food-elimination diet for my DD to narrow down reasons for her eczema flare ups.
Also, I worry about the daily Zyrtec, steroid creams, and occasional Benadryl. I have lots of questions about vitamins, foods, and minimizing her flare - ups without medication.

Any thoughts and/or advice is appreciated! :-)

Atopmom,

I'm interested in this topic also, as I seem to be dealing with atypical symptoms of my mold allergy. A friend's holistic doctor claims to have great success in treating severe allergies, and on my friend's recommendation I plan to look into it.

What about accupuncture? I have heard great things about this to help deal with allergies as well as other conditions. I've had accupuncture in the past and it's not really that difficult. I believe a 6 year old will have no trouble with it.

I believe that there are a great deal of natural products out there that can help us. So I don't see in any harm in seeing a holistic doctor and get their input.

hi,
i don't know....i've had chronic hives for the past 5 months and have spent over a thousand dollars in the past few months seeing a naturopath and nothing has helped me get rid of these hives. but maybe you'll have better luck!

One of the issues I'm having is cost...insurance does not pay for homeopathic, holistic or "alternative" doctors. I know it will be worth it IF they can help, but I am frustrated that I have to go to the same drs. b/c insurance pays for them.
Options are limited due to insurance. The first visit (1 hr) to a holistic dr. is about $400 in my area - then of course there are follow ups. I want to make sure this is what we want to do (ie. will actually help) before we commit to spending the money out of pocket.
This is why I posted here - to see if anyone had seen big results with allergies/eczema/hives before we take this leap.

THANKS -

I can understand your hesitation because I would be hesitant too! :) If you are going to spend that much money you want a guarantee or at least a few success stories. But I think what you are going to hear is that it's one of those things. It may work for one person but not another.

Very true...it might work for you but so far hasn't worked for me. When you're desperate you'll try anything to get relief.
