confused  Ok I am new to the Asthma family.  Recently diagnosed after over 6 months of a painful, unproductive cough.  I have been referred to a pulmonologist who is excellent and has been working with me for about a month.

Because I have additional conditions I was told my asthma management may be difficult.  I am on Singulair, ZyrtecQvar & ProAir HFA daily for the asthma, Prevacid for the GERD & Prozac & Klonopin for anxiety.

The Singulair & both inhalers have greatly increase my anxiety.  My GERD has become uncontrolled within the past 2 weeks, and I have started having constant chest pain over the past 5 days.  I understand that the steriod in the Qvar will increase my anxiety and the Singular and ProAir may also effect it.

I have not been able to find any information regarding the effects the asthma meds may have on GERD.  Until I started the asthma meds my GERD was well controlled by 2 daily doses of Prevacid.

The asthma meds have decreased my cough intensity and frequency but have not controlled it.  I can no longer climb my basement stairs without being completely winded & with increased chest pain.

Are these common symptoms of Asthma?

How long does it typically take to find the right control medications?

Does anyone else have increased GERD symptoms due to asthma meds?

I've read that anxiety & GERD can increase asthma symptoms, is this a vicious cycle I get to look forward to for the rest of my life?

I am a 45 year old, previously healthy, active female that has always been a nonsmoker.   I'm looking for some first hand information on asthma

I have asthma and severe GERD. I started coughing constantly three years ago. After countless tests and different medications the doctors all agreed that my acid reflux was worsening and I needed stronger GERD medications. After they upped my doses to two Nexium a day and a zantac they discovered it wasn't helping me any. They found out my LES was weak and I had a large hiatal hernia. They said if I want to stop the damage to my lungs I would need surgery. I just went to a surgeon who did a scope and found polyps in my stomach due to long term use and high doses of acid reducing medications.
My surgery is scheduled for December 22nd. He said my asthma troubles will be greatly reduced, because the acid was spilling over into my lungs keeping them inflamed.
Please don't ignore the GERD, like my allergist says, "It's all connected".

Best of luck Joy with your upcoming surgery! 12/22? Really now, that close to Christmas! What a dandy gift. I intend to fax the Dr this morning with my latest changes and then cross my fingers because I'm leaving the country until 12/8.

It's my Christmas present to myself. :)
It's because I'm off work on Christmas break for two and a half weeks and it will give me time to heal. I don't like being on a liquid diet for Christmas, but the doctor says I'll lose 30-40 pound before it's all over. :) I need it.

confused  This coming Thursday--Have to take the "Methacholine challenge" test--my pulmonary Dr suspects (as I suggested)--I MAY have CVA  "Cough Variant Asthma"-! rolleyes
NO "wheezing"...no 'chest tightness"...or any broncospasm...JUST a dry..non productive..tiring ...cough! confused

I JUST got over the flu 2 weeks ago--& this cough is still here!   (The cough syrup w codeine helps)--BUT...after researching CVA,,....& its causes & treatment--(it is basically an over sensitive bronchial tree...& an inflammation of bronchi)---I JUST want to treat the .."inflammation"...(steroid inhaler...like Advair ...asmacort etc...NOTHING.,..I mean i want NOTHING to do with ANY of these..."broncodilators!") nono

I suffer from frequent.."bouts"...of SVT.....irregular heartbeats etc...& ALL these broncodilators....have these as "possible side effects"- skull    I have enough of a problem controlling these irregular heatbeats..I'll be darned------------------IF i take ANYTHING.....that even remotely COULD...bring them on! mad

This Cough Variant asthma-----I've had..."attacks"...of it..FIRST time...in early 1970s.....had a "bad bout "..in 1982..& a very bad one in 1992..(lasted for..like 4 months!)--BUT---see how long..I can go BETWEEN...."bouts"?

I just wanna get this inflammation down-----& have my body heal itself!  I don't mind taking an 'anti-allergy" med..like Zyrtec...etc....& again.....a steroid.....But NO.."broncodilitors"...with their "POSSIBLE serious cardiovascular"....side effects!

I ASK---for some...ADVICE!    Any people out there have "cough variant asthma"?  IF so.......have you gotten it 'under control'...with a minimum of meds..(Like a "steroid inhaler"...& antihistamine?  Please---let me know----- :-) -----------ALSO...is the .."Methacholine challenge",....difficult?  I won't.."choke"...or anything...will I? sad
 Also----my wife getting me for Christmas......an AIR PURIFIER..(HEPA filter.....removes dust...pollen...etc)-- :-)     btw...What is a "good one"-!?

-Thanks to EVERYONE!   You have NO idea of what a great sense of...."strength...hope & encouragment...you've been!  yeah I believe we patients MUST be..our own advocates!-------------------Looking forward to hearing from all of you with CVA.......& your experiences with it...& meds! Thanks--regards...Robert....(Hoping you all had a nice Thanksgiving)-- cool
