smile Hi everyone---
I just took my "methacholine challenge" test this morning (Thurs-Dec 3)--

Also took other Pulmonary function tests--(Spirometry--etc)-And they were ALL excellent...(No COPD....etc)

I had two really nice & kind Techs  (So nice & helpful I'm writing a complimentary letter to the head Dr. praising their help & patience!)--wink

Anyway--the results surprised me...happily so-!smhair
I tested NEGATIVE to the "Methacholine challenge" test---my pulmonary response NOT being affected at ALL,....by ALL FIVE increasing doses of methacholine!shocked

Soooo- I do NOT have asthma.,..or what I THOUGHT I had...."Cough Variant Asthma"-!yeah

The Pulmonary Dr. was paged & put on phone with me--!
She said.."Robert . you did well--you do not have asthma!"---I thanked her...then asked..
."Thanks Doctor...but I STILL need something to stop this cough and treat this...(as I called it)...'.Inflamed Bronchi'--  i need something!eyes
She said she would call me later this afternoon......& call in something...after she reviews the results!idea
I'm hoping she'll give me some "temporary"....treatment...with "steroid"...(either an inhaler or in pill form...like a Medrol pack)------She DID say..."Coughs in some people......after the flu or colds...can linger...for a long while !

Sooooo...that's IT!     Surprised?  YES!           Relieved?  YES!   But..now that I took the "Gold Standard"...of asthma tests..& 'passed".....& did well on the other Pulmonary function....I am also using nutritional supplements--!idea
The last  4 days...(before the test)--I increased my intake of my "Omega-3"...marine oils!
They have a very good.."anti-inflammatory"...quality!  Also...taking Selenium--!

Anyway---does ANYONE.....have...what I have?   A chronic..non productive cough.............& NOT have asthma,...(or ANY pulmonary "issue"....again...ALL my other pulmonary tests were good....& my chest X ray...normal---!)

I DO hope some people get back with their...thoughts..& input!wink  thank you all again---Regards--Robert

I'm glad to hear the test went fine and that you don't have asthma. That's always a bonus! I'm sorry if you mentioned before but have you ever tried Tessalon Pearls? My daughter was given this recently after a bout of strep throat and it helped her coughing immensely. But I don't know if this can be used long term.

Red--Thank you so much-!

Re: Tessalon Perles---YES...I HAVE them.....But stopped using them...when i was taking cough med...w codeine! I did not wanna take too much!

When my Dr. calls today--I'm gonna ask if I can take them...again...! They are really safe---just "anathesize"...the muscle in the lung.....that gives cough reflex!

YES.,..they really did help--! Thanks again---Hoping others respond! Regards--Robert

A quick "PS"---regarding my..."Good News"...about my "Methacholine challenge" test---showing I do NOT have ashtma......I am STILL getting my...."evening coughing spells"!

This is SOoo ...frustrating! I DON'T have asthma----my pulmonary Function Tests are all OK....YET...this DARN cough..."hangs In"...!

It's driving me....NUTS! The pulmonary Dr---is gonna call me tomorrow---I'm gonna "suggest"...she give me an Rx....for a lose dose "Steroid inhaler"...(like Flovent)----& maybe an antihistine...! Just to "settle down"....my darn inflamed bronchial area! You think this would help?

The "coughing spells"...are becoming...less often...BUT....they come at..nite...& for 2 hours.....they drive me NUTS! What could it be..? And.................How long before I can expect this darn cough to finally....GO? Thanks---Robert

I don't have the dry cough but I do have the coughs in the morning and at night. According to my doc, allergy symptoms occur mostly in the mornings and in the evenings. I have horrible post nasal drip from my allergies that if I don't take allergy meds, I actually lose my voice completely from the PND. However, I did have a virus at the beginning of the year with that horrible persistant dry cough and it hung around for quite a while...very frustrating so I can definately relate with you!

Thanks for your concerned responses, Sherry--

I suggested to my pulmonary Dr...& she concurred---my bronchial area feels sooo, inflamed...I asked her if I could use Flovent...for a short time--just to reduce the inflammation. She prescribed for me...the 110mcg (medium dose) 2 puffs...twice daily-!

I started it yesterday--Hoping after 3 or 4 weeks, my bronchi will be "settled down"..! Do any of you who DO take "inhaled steroids"...have any idea of..."about"...how long before I notice any improvement? (Like...one week...two weeks?)

My cough IS...improving! I'm coughing less often..& the cough is milder. But, I want to really help my body to heal---& as a former Dr. told me---"the bronchial area is very unforgiving once it is inflamed!"

That's it-! Tests out of the way--no asthma-!
BTW---anyone else--taking an inhaled steroid who does NOT have asthma? (Like for a short period of time?)-- Thanks again--Robert

I have used Asmanex occasionally when I get bronchitis. It works pretty fast to ease my inflammation. Just don't forget to rinse your mouth out after using a steroid inhaler (it can cause thrush if not rinsed out). I'm glad to hear you are starting to improve - yay for you! :) I hope you continue to get better every day.

it also seems like you have some allergents. perhaps an air filter for you bedroom. i know for me i drive him nuts, window is open even in winter. i was at least nice enough to buy him an electric blanket (with my money not his rofl). i also have to have a fan on and an air purifier going. if i dont, i will wake up gagging, stuffed up and bleeding nose.

I do! I love mine. It is a pain to keep build up off it, but worth it.

Thank you-

Yes--cough just about all gone--! blush An occasional cough...here & there!

Just the by product of the flu I had!   The "challenge" test...was no big deal-

My wife ordered the  UV-C...."Room Sanitizer",...from JC Penney-

Made by "Germ Guardian"       www.germguardianvac.com    Model# EV 9102

Does a really good job----air is "sanitized"...of pollen...molds..mildew...dust...dander...bacteria....etc...by Ultra Violet light---I highly suggest some kind of "Air purifier"..or "Sanitizer"...for anyone w asthma..& people in general--!yeah Regards--Robert

I got mine from Walmart. Mine has a permament filter which requires vaccumning often.

My cough IS........getting better--BUT---WHY do I still get a cough in the evening-?

Not EVERY nite...mind you---but I still get some..."Whopper"....spells!shocked

Again....they are getting less frequent!   I just took some "traditional" cough med----(Nyquil....w DM)----to 'supress the cough......& make me drowsy!  I'm OFF the cough syrup w codeine my pulmonary Dr---gave me!  I took half the bottle....then stopped-

The "Million Dollar" question---WHy the heck do coughs..."hang in"..."LINGER"......Soooo long?confused I hear some people talk bout 4...even 5 months!  I've had mine....since 3rd week..in October...this is over TWO MONTHS!   I need some ...'encouragment'......that this cough WILL go away-!

Again....had ALL the tests...by "top of the line"...pulmonary specialist---X ray--Meth  challenge..(NO asthma)---spirometry---!  She just said...after my bout w the flu----my bronchi were just.."inflamed"...& the little cilia.......were kinda..."worn down"....by thye virus!

Hoping to hear from some people---btw...Happy Holidays to all--regards--Robertwink

Woton,
I don't know if I've asked you this before...
Do you cough when your hungry? Stomach full? Bending over? High stressed?

I've coughed for three years...due to GERD. Acid was washing over my vocal cords. I didn't hurt or burn any. It was causing a mucus build up in my throat causing coughing at certain times.

Just a thought.
