Son bought me some Coconut flavored Decaf coffee for Christmas and adult daughter had a few cups throughout the day after her regular morning 2 cups of coffee. Late this afternoon she started to have a systemic reaction, tongue swelling, face puffing, difficulty breathing. Not too extreme but she has a ton of other allergies so we know the drill. Eventually she was vomiting coffee... all of it... many times. Managed to keep down some benedryl and we got through the evening.
My question is this: Anyone here heard of coffee allergies? I found some info on the net but it's mostly caffeine related. I'm really getting miffed over this. She appears to be allergic to things from South America... Peeling potatoes makes her hands break out in horrible hives and she skin tested positive to them, but she can eat them without a problem. She is allergic to latex, cinnamon, chocolate and guinea pigs... All from Latin America! Now coffee or coconut... Both from down there???
We are currently "insurancically challenged" (no insurance) and just making ends meet. Don't have a bunch of $$$ for the allergist and really don't want to go to ER either. She has decided to give up coffee until we get health insurance... (sigh!)
Anybody allergic to coffee?

Now to me that would be the most HORRIBLE allergy to have because I just LOVE coffee! :) I'm sorry that your daughter is having allergic reactions to these things. I have some food allergies - hazel nuts and strawberries, and it can pose a challenge because many restaurants and other products are either made or produced around these items. Has your daughter had coffee with no flavoring in it with no reaction? Could it be that she is just allergic to the flavored coffee?

Sherry,
She has never had any reactions to coffee in the past... This one hit us out of the blue. She did mention that she forgot to take her Zyrtec (generic) in the morning and if you add all the coffee to that, plus the coconut flavor... maybe that's what did it. Don't really know... She is gonna try some Mountain Dew next week in case it's caffeine that is causing the problem. Life sure is a mystery sometimes.
