Hi,

Last year I came off my inhaler (for my asthma) completely and in the summer and I was fine, until I started getting loads of chest infections in the winter. I went back on my inhalers but in the winter I had a really bad chest infection which took around 2 months to go and I was given singulair for a few months which got me better in the end. After this I had another chest infection around march this year and although the chest infection went I still had the blocked nose and bad post nasal drip (loads of mucus going from my nose down my throat, especially after eating) from it.

Over the past few months I've been going to the doctors about it and I've been prescribed singulair, cetirizine hydrochloride, fluticasone propionate all of which didn't solve the problem. Last week I went on 20mg daily (prescribed for 10 days) of prednisolone and I've been on it 6 days now and it hasn't really done anything for my problem. I've also been getting various side effects from the tablets like light headedness, trouble sleeping and feeling depressed (which I've never had before while on medication).

I don't know whether it's an allergy or a structural problem thats causing the post nasal drip but it's driving me mad and I'm moving to go to Uni this Saturday so I really need to sort myself out. I told my doctor about the side effects and asked what else he could do but he said that as I am moving theres nothing more he can do now.
I don't know how long prednisilone takes to work but I don't know whether to come off it or stay on?

Any suggestions to help my problem would be greatly appreciated or if anyone knows any good over the counter medications to dry up the excess mucus in the mean time, that would help a lot too.

Thanks

Steroids are notorious for causing those types of side effects. It only eases after the dose has dropped or discontinued.

Have you seen an ENT yet?

I have horrible PND due to allergies and right now I'm on Singulair and Zyrtec. It helps control it, but I still get it. Every once in a while I will take cough syrup or Mucinex DM to help combat the PND. Also, though I never tried it, a netti pot can help clear the nose from excess PND. My daughter, who has severe allergies, uses a saline nose spray.

Also, be sure to drink lots of water. It can help thin the secretions and make it easier for you to get rid of.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm going to go to the doctor's when I move and try and get refereed to an ENT doctor. My doctor where I'm living now said he was going to refer me but as I am moving somewhere new he can't.

For now I'm going to stop taking prednisolone and I'm going to buy some sudafed decongestant now to see if that helps with the PND, although I know it's not something I can take long term.

How long did singulair take to help you? I'm just curious because I have two boxes of it that I didn't use. I took it for about a week with Zyrtec (and I think the Zyrtec helped a little bit) but I stopped using them when I went on the prednisilone.

I'm not really sure how long it took for the Singulair to help me. I started on the Zyrtec and Singulair at the same time - so it's hard to pinpoint exactly which one has helped the most. However, I did try to stop one or the other at some point but I found that I needed both to help control my PND and allergies.
