Greetings Everyone,

I could use some advice. For many years I have been battling problems with my ability to smell and taste. It all started when I started wearing dentures about ten years ago. I would deal with severe mouth pain and it took me a while to get used to my dentures. At that point, I didn't really have any major problems smelling or tasting. Just battling the dentures, sore mouth and different types cremes and such to hold the dentures in place. Let it be known too that I've had other health issues in which I took medications and such. I also had marital problems and a lot of stress in my life.

That being said, shortly after dealing with the dentures, I started having problems tasting. But, it wasn't an all the time thing. It was on and off. Sometimes the water was taste very bad. Milk and even food. I would eventually start feeling sick and even have my mouth burning as a result. I though I was going crazy and at times thought I was being poisoned. I saw different doctors over the years and so far no one can find a reason for my taste and smell issues. I sometimes taste bleach and smell mint. I also get a bad lemon falvor in the drinks and food I sometimes eat. But, this is still not all the time.

I now live alone, as my marriage ended a short while ago with the death of my partner. My taste and smell disorder is worse then ever. My doctor has performed test and sees nothing wrong. Although, a couple years back my dentist did see evidence of bleach in my mouth. He assumed it was some product I was cleaning my dentures with, but I don't use bleach. There's only a couple of options left for me, either I am losing my mind, being poisoned or have a disorder which no one can explain.

If there's someone out there dealing with this same problem or similar, please communicate with me. I need to know I'm not alone. If there's someone out there who knows what this could be, please help.

Here's a list of my symptoms again:

- I occasionally smell mint, lemon, cinnamon and bleach
- I occasionally taste mint, lemon, cinnamon and bleach in my water, milk, all drinks and food
- I occasionally deal with extreme burning mouth as a result of the smell and taste
- The occasional upset stomach and fatigue I attribute to the burning mouth
- The occasional diarreah I attribute to the burning mouth, upset stomach and fatigue
- Depression and anxiety due to the symptoms above
(occasionally throughout a 24-48 hour period of time)

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

That sounds terrible. At a guess I would say that the products you used to hold your dentures in place all those years ago caused problems, allergy problems, there was possibly something in the paste that triggered the problems, but I'm guessing of course, and it does seem strange that years lateryou are still experiencing difficulties. I wonder if it is linked somehow to any Meds that you are taking? stranger things have happened. Is it possible to change whatever Meds you are taking for an alternative to see if there is a difference. Can you change the products you are using in your mouth for something entirely different? I dont think I have ever heard of anything similar, it is very unusual.

The sores in your mouth could have started chronic sinus infections. Those can wreck your sense of smell permanently.

I have lost my sense of smell permanently due to sneezing bouts and sinus infections. I was diagnosed with allergic asthma in 1983. I do have a good sense of taste.

Sorry that both your senses seem compromised.
