My name is channing. I have been haveing a very very very very very very very very very very very extreme case of chronic hives on skin all over my legs, arms and body with chronic itching.I also get swellings in my lip which I think is angioedema.I HAVE BEEN VERY UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THIS. I have had this everyday since December 4, 2005 . I want to let you know I started breaking out in hives back in 1999. I have had allergy tests and was found to be Allergic to Feathers. No Doctor is able to help me with finding out what is wrong with me. I do suffer from Hypothyroidism. Below I have some questions:

Questions I have:

1. Does anyone have Hypothyroidism?

2. Does anyone suffer from chronic hives if so what do you do to get rid of the hives?

3. How do I get rid of the hives?

5. Does anyone get swellings in their lip?

4. What can I do to get rid of the Swellings in my lip?

I also want to say I have peridoxicle reactions to things like Benedryl, claritin, Zyretec, and Allegra

I am looking for postal mail pen pals to keep my postal mail box full. I am needing the people who would like to be my pen pal to please accept and understand that I write short letters with questiosn only. If you would like to be my pen pal please e-mail me at chnaning28270@yahoo.com

Hi Channing. My name is Meg, I've had chronic hives for the past 6 months. I'm still seeing doctor after doctor and don't have answers from them as of yet, but I can help you with what helps me!

My hives have been connected with thyroiditis, and I'm currently taking Synthroid to regulate my thyroid, I have seen small improvements in my hives. (aka a major outbreak once or twice a week, versus daily). The only thing that helps me when I have a major hives outbreak is to take a WARM not hot Oatmeal bath. Aveeno makes great products for itchy irritated skin.

The swelling of the lips is called angioedemia. I have it too! Fun, as if the hives aren't enough. My eyes, lips, throat hands and feet swell with my major hives outbreaks. I've had to get an epi-pen shot because my throat was swelling closed! I have a wonderful allergist I've called several times in the middle of the night because of my swelling. Here's what I've been told.If you experience trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the throat go to the hospital. Otherwise, take a TON of Bennadryl. My doctor had me take 4 bennadryl, and then 2 every 4 hours. He basically said you can't take too much bennadryl. It helped the swelling but knocks me out. If you have reactions to anti-histamines I'm not sure what else to tell you.

I'm going to start looking into more natural remedies to avoid all the anti-histimines and prednisone.
Good luck! I know it's frustrating.....

Hi,  I just joined.  I have chronic uticaria or rotten hives.  I've had it since Nov.07.  Mine are so bac that I have to carry an epi pen at all times cause my body gets covered with huge red blotches the size of salad plates and then my bronchial tubes swell and my throat does too.  I found a doc that specializes in this and I am on 3 antihistamines and they are working but I am sluggish and tired alot.  She said this could last 3-5 years.  Oh no!!!!  There is some link between this and autoimmune stuff cause 20 yrs ago I had Graves disease (alot like Hashimotos and they nuked my thyroid and I live on synthroid) and then 7 years started with pernicious anemia and now this.   Lots of people say STRESS.  Well, that is what brought mine on...on 9/11/06 I had artho. surgery on my right knee.  all went well.  I was back to work just a week and then a lady crashed into 3 of us sitting at a light.  Guess what?? She smashed my GOOD knee into the dashboard and I started 6 months of therapy on neck and knee.  I am getting ready to settle with the insurance and trying to explain to the agent that this came from stress and I never had hives before in my life.  This hive thing is horrible and people don't understand till they see you in full-blown breakout and then it scares them. I am trying to learn as much as I can.  thanks, sugarbear

Hi, when I read all the posts - it is great to hear others have the same things. I'm NOT CRAZY!!! I forgot to mention that my face and eyes and lips swell like balloons and then I have to go home and take lots of benadryl or do my epi pen. Do you all feel like you don't know your body anymore? It just goes nuts for no seeming reason. I even wake up at 4am swelling up if I ever miss any of the 3 meds I take. sigh.... It's good to hear from others. thanks, sugarbear

Hi.  I just joined.  Have had hives for a year.  I am doing all of the junk the doctors are having me do, but I'm changing my diet and taking vitamins.  I have sarcoidosis which causes inflammation in organs.  I have it in my lungs, the docs say it doesn't have anything to do with the hives, but I don't think so.

Has anyone tried any homeopothy for this?

eyes Hi. I have had Chronic Urticaria with Angioedema for 3 months now. I feel sorry for those who have had it for years, eek. I do have stress.. (financial, husband that is purposely annoying and kids that are ADHD)...but I also have had problems with my auto immune system in the past. I kept losing pregnancies... it seems the female (as am I) got attacked more according to the tissue examinations some more then others and only one is living out of five. I always complained about wt. gain that wasn't
ALL caused by myself but my thyroid always came back normal. Now my stomach is gaining in fast amounts and I am not one to gain it there (pear shaped).
I have been to the allergist , he put me on Doxepin (a tricyclic antidepressant, but used for hives) and Tagemet (again used for hives not intended use for stomach). I have read on the web that it is highly used by allergists as they found it to work well but not okayed by ?FDA? for the urticaria issues. So far, the meds don't seem to change things, it's only been a few weeks though. The Doxepin makes you sleepy I take it at night and do get through the day. I had my husband take it one night and he couldn't even get through the next day barely. So... I will go off of it if it isn't working. Any body else try these meds? Oh and I am on Claritin in the morn. still hives. Benadryl works better but..the sleepy effect also.. Right now I am not taking it, but am willing to, in the past it worked somewhat.
From what I read on legit med web sites it is somehow related to the Auto Immune System (gone whack!, overactive) This can be from many sources and I wonder why nobody mentions these. My allergist knows about such things too. It can be medicine allergy (I was taking a blood pressure med. known to do this- Lisinopril- an ace inhibitor), it can be related to thryroid- namely hashimoto (hypo thyroid), leukemia, lupus (what they were checking me for when pregnancy issues occured), there is more unfortunately. If its medicine related you can go to a dermatologist and get biopsied to see if it truly is from your medicine. Try the allergist for.. food allergies or whatever. My doc is the one who ordered all the blood labs to check for everything else for me. If you all need a list later I can provide it.
Keep a notebook so you can notice when and what your symptoms do.. don't rely on memory. I didn't at first and I am surprised when I look back and see something I forgot about. The hives are daily but are worse from certain triggers. Last night I slept in a room that I cleaned real well, but possibly to many chemicals.. and I am paying for it today!! I get cold and chills- goosebumps actually, now too. I took a shower to get any of the chemicals off of me and now I am so cold and purple. Do any of you have that type of issue?
My angioedema usually swells my lips, chin, eyes and hands. For instance, I know now that mine comes at certain times in my female cycle, in regards to the angioedema , every 2 weeks around dif. hormone changes. So I have my docs look into that.. and hope...fully point me in the right direction. I don't have insurance so I have to test lightly. You may want to get a cbc with dif and platelets and a sed rate test because that helps eliminate and point in the right direction. I botched mine and have to redo as I was on prednisone while taking the test (blood draw). The cbc test.. shows your eosiphinil (sp?) count and they compare it to your white cells count and distinguish the percent ratio which then helps show if it is allergic, parasites, blood cancers and etc... I find it interesting that alot of you with thryoid issues are having the hives.. even though both are related to the auto immune system and it seems a no brainer to me.. not sure why all the docs are having issues with it from what your telling me. By the way what is the difference in symtoms of thyroiditis and hashimotos hypo thyroid?
Enough for now. I hope this helps someone and in return if someone can give some knowlege/experience back! yeah

oops I posted prev. and said I took Tagamet this is incorrect.. it is zantac. Even so I am not stating it is helping.. but.. it is the H2 the docs use and the H1 is someother.. I believe my claritin is in this catagory. Anyways sometimes combining meds from each category helps certain individuals. But I still believe there is an underlying condition.. of what makes your auto immune system go wacky and that the hives are just a symptom of something deeper. As far as Angioedema there is a hereditary form that can be tested for , I have a list of those tests also. But you could look up on the web under hereditary edema. Now it is rare... likely if people (relatives) in the past have died and they weren't sure why... with hereditary edema I believe your organs can swell and I believe mostly your gastro system such as your intestines. My Allergist said there isn't a cure in the US. I briefly read someone say that there is in another country.. were cautious (ha) here in the US. I also read that Danocrine can help although that is an allergy for me., but it is an Androgen (hormone) that may be worth looking into for those who have Angioedema. I have an Epi Pen (figures it has a form of sulfa in it, that I am allergic too) that I am instructed to use if my throat closes... I can't breathe. I have used the 7 day prednisone totally cleared me up! but I can't live on it. ... wanted to eat..

You do not sound like a urticaria patient at all. Hives (uticaria) is pink to reddish, raised but no bleeding, blisters, flakiness. Sorry your having that but gosh it would seem like a good dermatologist would know. Maybe scabies or an allergic form of ... oh shoot I forgot the name. But do google searches and such and look up rash... find pictures relating to your hands. But I doubt you'll find answers in this forum unless their is one for rashes.

Autoimmune dysfunc,

Welcome to HealingWell!  I am sure your knowledge will be helpful to others and hopefully someone will come along who will be able to help you also.  I do not know any thing about chronic urticaria, so I looked it up.  It looks like it would be rather unpleasant.  I hope you continue to post on HealingWell.  After a short time, you start to feel like part of a big family around here.

Take care!

Carla

Momx3,

I wanted to give you a warm welcome to HealingWell.  I am sorry I don't have any answers for the rash on your hands, not only am I not a medical professional, if your doctor can't figure it out I would be afraid to even guess.  There may be some others to come along who may have had the same experience.

If you are not seeing a dermatologist, I would strongly recommend that.  Please keep coming back to HealingWell, we are like a family here.

Take care!

momx3,
I am sort of new to the lingo.. but what I meant is this thread may not be that helpful to you being it didn't sound like you have urticaria. Chronic Urticaria is Urticaria that lasts over 6 weeks also. But you still might find help in this forum on another thread. Not that your not welcome on this thread its just it doesn't at all sound like the hives. Good Luck in your search.

Momx3, did you see a regular doctor or a dermatologist? To me, it sort of sounds like your rash might be fungal. I had itchy bumps on my hand quite a few years ago so the doctor put a black light over my hand. I guess a fungal infection will show up in the black light. So he prescribed me an anti-fungal cream and my rash was gone within a week. Also too, if it is a fungal infection, the more you itch - the more in can spread. Just a possible cause of the rash but there can be a wide variety of reasons for this rash.
