It's hard to describe the "feeling" I often get in my left nostril but I'll try.  I do have allergies, but this problem occurs often when my allergies are doing fine.  I get an "itch" in one spot about an inch and a half up on the inside,  If I play sports, often it REALLY itches afterwards and almost feels like a hot poker up there.  Last night, after playing basketball for only a short time, it caused me to sneeze for 5 hours afterwards, at first on each breath in through that nostril.  I also have very runny discharge both out the nostril and post nasal drip.

This occurs about 12 x/year to this degree or close.  ALWAYS just the left nostril.  Also, it can be brought on by some more severe allergies or a cold.  I do NOT feel that it is allergies.  I tHINK it's more like an irritated "spot" up there that is very sensative.  The ENT doctor says there are no polups (sp?) or the like and just treats it like an allegry symptom, which means she doesn't treat it at all.

Any ideas?

Hi tham, welcome to Healingwell :) Have you tried prescription nose sprays yet such as Nasonex or Flonase? Have you tried any OTC nasal sprays like saline? I usually only get that feeling when I get a cold but it is HIGHLY annoying is it not??? What meds are you on if any?

I have tried many of those sprays - all maybe.  Little help so far.  Unfortunately also, the new antihistimines are no where near as effective as ACTIFED for me.  I NEED actifed when I get these symptoms, in a much higher than recommended dosage. it causes drowsiness and worse, I have high blood pressure which the pseudefedrine in Actifed is very bad for.

Saline doesn't seem to help, but I use it pretty frequestly.

Thanks for responding.

Could your high blood pressure be the reason for this problem? I know high blood pressure can do some strange things to your body and nose bleeds or nasal sensitivity is among them. Do you have your high blood pressure under control?

Tham - I hope you get this message. I just happened to find your message tonight while I was desperately searching the net for relief for this one sided tickling and itching feeling in my left nostril. It feels like there is a feather up my nose that is irritating and ticking my nose and causing me to sneeze over and over again. sometimes I sneeze so much and so violently that I'm afraid I'm going to give myself a stroke! I have used Nasonex, Flonase, Astelin, Benadryl and Allegra. I have very high blood pressure, so any meds with pseudoephedrine are very scary for me to take. I get heart palpitations and become extremely hyper.
Today I called my doctors "help line" and told the nurse that I desperately need help. She talked to the doc and told me I could come in tomorrow for an allergy shot, which is a cortisone shot of some kind. I remember years ago. (about 12 years ago) I had one of those shots and it cleared my nose up really fast. I don't have much faith in it this time.

Good luck!  I can't see how a shot will help.  They keep treating my problem as an allergy, but I don't believe that's all it is.  Why soooo severe in ONE side and nothing in the other?  It must be some physical issue with the lining of that nostril I am convinced.

I had that side cauterized but it still bleeds often.  Haven't had an "episode" since this post, but I have little confidence it is solved.

Just a quick 24 hour update. I had the shot yesterday at the docs office. The nurse told me it was called Kenalog. I was also told to start taking an antibiotic (Keflex) because it looked like I had a nasal infection? I absolutely HATE to take antibiotics, because I've had adverse or allergic reactions to every one of them except Keflex. I hate to risk building up an immunity to it unless I really need it, but I guess I will go ahead with it. I feel a little better today, but still have that itch midway up my left nostril, and still have a runny nose. Oh yes - I too have itching in my ears that drives me absolutely crazy. I will say that it has gone away (temporarily I am sure) since I had the cortisone shot. It has rained a whole lot here this past month. I'm hoping that when the sun finally comes out for a few days that maybe my allergies will get better?

Ok, I have this EXACT SAME thing happen to me! I thought I was a freak. I'm 23 now and the first time it really started was a few years ago. I was playing soccer and was pretty out of shape at the time. I had a bad asthma attack and then..... the nose! It was awful. I started sneezing uncontrolabley and I had this burning in my right nostril. My right nostril and right eye poured for about a week I want to say. But the entire time I had that God awful sensation in my right nostril. It felt like a bug flew up my nose and was vibrating every time I breathed in.

Anyway, I never found an answer to it, but I just started playing soccer for my college, and it started happening AGAIN! It sucks! I have that feeling in my right nostril right now! It was sooo bad the first day of practice. Anyway... I'd really like to know if you have discovered any massive breakthroughs with this. I really hope you check this thing, I cant believe this happens to someone else.

I think it what's happening is an allergic reaction that's only affecting one side of your nostril.

I've got to replying to some of this... First, I have had the same problem with my right nostril. "like a bug" has made a home there and descides to move around a bit midway up there at anytime it decides. I haven't had a chance to go and check it there is a polyp with a doc yet but will soon. However, this is what I've observed over the past few years dealing with this unusual aweful sensation that may sound like allergies, but I know is not. First, the crazy iching attact only is affected from one side of the nose, and as a respond to Joy, it is not an allergic reaction to seasonal allergies on one side of the nose... the reason why is I get these aweful itch attack, many time inside a filtered invironment. I woudn't doubt that any pollen or particles in the air can't contribute to the problem, but again my left nostril doesn't react at all. In trying to find out what in the factor is, I've noticed a pattern at least for me over the years. The syptoms accur only when I get hot... meaning in the winter I really have no problems. However, when it gets hotter in the summer, the attacks start to accur. That's why I found your initial description very interesting Tham, as you have huge itching attacks after playing soccer. I assume your body temp is way up. Look, I'm no doctor, so I'm not diagnosing anyone but for me, bodytemp has something to do with it, and I don't have highblood pressure. Another thing I've noticed, is if I eat a lot of sugar, not long afterwards I have attacks. I'm wondering if anyone knows if candida yeast overgrowth has anything to do with this problem we all have. From what I've read, Candida yeast overgrowth can do all sorts of things in the body and is caused by taking antiboitics without supplementing it with probiotics afterwards, thus your balance of good a bad bacteria are off wack causing candida overgrowth. At least this is what I've read, and if anyone see I've given mis info candida, please correct as I haven't look into it enough yet myself. I would sure like to rid myself of this nasal problem though, and it's nice to find others who can understand what it's like. My wife just looks at me like I'm crazy, and everyone else I try to explain it to... and you can tell what they are thinking, "oh you just have allergies" Man that is so not the case!

I've been experiencing the same sensation in one nostril like never before, and am getting over a cold. It only itches when I wake up, and for the first half of the day. I tried Flonase, and Tylenol allergy and sinus. Neither one has really helped and my poor nose is so dried out from blowing. Has anyone had this problem following a cold/flu? And if so, can you recommend any remedies? I hate taking any medications when it can be avoided.

I agree, a saline nasal spray can help.

When I had my last cold, my nose tickled and itched something fierce! It felt like that tingle when you first get when your about to sneeze, but only a sneeze never came. My eyes would water and I was all around miserable. It took 3 days for that feeling to go away but the saline nasal spray took the brunt of it away, however, I had to use it A LOT.

I have systemic candida, which commonly occurs with cancer, also something I am battling. Nostril itch with clear discharge and violent sneezing just started. I wonder too about the candida connection. Go gluten-free and cut out sugars, then take Olive Leaf extract, Pau d'arco and other supplements to battle candida long-term.

I have this same tickle / itch on the inside wall of my left nostril. It just tickles all the time, but mine just started yesterday. It is DEFINITElY not my allergies. Allergies are nothing like this. And at my age, I'm pretty good at identifying when I'm dealing with any kind of yeast issues. This is a crazy tickle. The "bug" analogy was pretty good. It almost reminds me of how horse flesh shakes in response to a fly.

I've been trying saline and my Nasonex, Zyrtec, Alavert, etc., but it's just not allergy related. My tickle's only less than an inch up my nostril, meaning I can actually touch the spot. I can put my finger or a tissue on it to calm it. Mostly I'm sitting with my finger pressed against the outside of my nose, which pretty much calms it. Since I can feel the smoothness of the spot, there's obviously no polyp.

It seems to be a similar response to the one that happens when you're horsing around a get a good bop or hit on the nose. The itch. The sneeze. The eyes watering.

I wish someone could answer this delimna. Tham, Twilight, Mrs. Mac, aew1301, and Remiras has your problem been resolved?

I've got to join this party. The description that Tham gave, followed by others is practically identical to what I've been experiencing. I've never had allergies before, and the way this can come and go does not fit what I know about allergies. I've been experiencing this for several months now, but I feel it is becoming worse. With me, I get this irritation in the top of my left nostril. I have always thought it is unusual that the feeling has never been inside my sinuses, but at the top inside of my left nostril and nowhere else. In fact, when I feel this irritation the most, I can actually squeeze against the outside of the left part of my nose, towards the top where you would imagine the top-inside nostril space would be, and it feels like I'm squeezing the spot where the irritation is located. This comes on without warning, and that side of my nose immediately starts running like a faucet, and the irritation radiates into my left eye, causing my eye to water like crazy. Antihistamines have no effect at all. And just like it came on suddenly, it leaves just as suddenly. Literally like someone flipped a switch off. My experience has been that it has usually lasted less than 24 hours, but I'm having an episode of this that has lasted for a couple of days now. It is truly debilitating, and I'm praying there is some physician who can figure this out. That I found you guys who have described the same symptoms makes me feel better. At least I know I am not crazy. I have some additional information that might be helpful. I wear a C-PAP at night for sleep apnea, and whatever this is will go away while I am using the C-PAP (Thank you Jesus!). But in the morning, within a couple of minutes of waking up and removing the C-PAP, it starts right back up. I have wondered if the moisture that the C-PAP device adds to the positive air pressure being forced into my nose has caused some kind of yeast infection, and I see that some of you have suspected yeast. But wouldn't you think that if it was yeast, it would manifest itself in other ways and in other locations, like the other side of the nose or more inside the sinuses? I've only had this irritation in the one spot at the top of my left nostril. Lastly, I have been unable to associate this with any activity or environment. It can come on when I'm active or not active, when I'm at home or at work, or in my car, and it will follow me from place to place. I feel like it does get a little better when I go outside in the cold. And I have not associated its coming on with any food I've eaten. I do feel that when I have gone for a few weeks without any problem and it starts back up, it seems to have always started soon after removing my C-PAP in the morning.

If anyone comes up with any information that might explain this and how to treat it, I would be most grateful if you could post the information here.

I've got to join in if only to find some solace in finally knowing I'm not alone with this. My symptoms are exactly like Tham, Twilight, Mrs. Mac, aew1301, and Remiras. The tickle, the bug feeling and in the upper part of my left nostril no less, which is irritated to the point of bothering my left eye. This has been on and off for years now and I just put up with it. My fiance says I must sneeze at least 50 times a day. These high velocity sneezes, after a full day of them, leave me exhausted and incredibly frustrated. It's killed my libido and makes me not want to leave the house.

It's not allergies, I tried everything you guys have talked about and nothing works. I use Saline rinses, moisturizing nasal spray, and not too long ago, was even prescribed a steroid spray called Fluticasone Propionate which helped amazingly well when I first started using it {it's intended for temporary use not long term}. But now that the symptoms have returned full force yet again, this spray does nothing. It doesn't matter where I am or the season.

The candida yeast overgrowth is something I've heard before and something I'm beginning to pay more attention to. The trouble is, there's SO much information out there and most seem to want to sell me some kind of miracle "cure". I do have many of the other symptoms of candida overgrowth. Hope this isn't TMI but constipation, irritable bowel, blurred vision in my left eye, fatigue, tight shoulders & neck, itchy skin... so many more. I have not yet tried eliminating sugars so I will try that next. Right now all I can do is take Advil so I can't feel it happening. Does anyone know more about this Candida stuff and foods or supplements to take to try to alleviate the problem in addition to changing my diet to see if it works?

An allergist would be the one to diagnose and treat the itches and some of the infectins too. ENTs seem to just like to do surgery.

I get allergy shots weekly, do them myself if hubby's not around. It's just like a shot diabetics take in the thigh if you do it yourself. Doesn't hurt! It takes a while to build up the doses. Then I had problems with the half cc causing pain and allergist let me cut back to .3cc, which is fine, works. I have NO allergy symptoms anymore.

Irritation in nose can irritate throat, which can trigger paplitations and arrhythmias or tachycardia. It's called cardioesophageal reflex or linked angina. It can be serious, gave me a heart attack a few years ago.

Please DO see an allergist!

This exact thing happens to me about twice a year. Something has got in there and is setting up house. You need to get a NetiPot and flush the wee beastie out. That's what I do and it works everytime.
It really does feel like there is a bug up your nose. I usually sneeze my head off and start dripping like a faucet.
It's a simple case of eviction. tongue

My condition has gotten worse since I wrote about it. It now seems to have moved into into my sinuses. I still have no congestion, but I constantly drip clear mucous. There has never been any sign of an infection, such as yellow or green mucous. It's almost like water coming out of my head. Here's the most recent development. You know that sensation you get in your sinuses if you eat a bite of something with a large amount of horseradish or wasabi, or you breath in smelling salts or ammonia? That's how my sinuses are feeling now if I inhale through my nose. Exhaling is okay. Consequently, I'm breathing more through my mouth to avoid that. Also, this pain makes using my C-PAP machine difficult. My doctor has told me she now thinks this is NOT allergy related, and she has referred me to an ENT. I have that appointment on Tuesday, and I will report anything conclusive.
