Hello,

I'm a newbie here! Recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I suspect my condition is caused or worsened by food intolerances. I've kept a food diary and the only think I've come up with is a reaction to meat - in particular beef products, maybe chicken.

I was wondering is that a common allergy food? Do other people suffer from it and if so what are the symptoms? All my symptoms are gastro-related as opposed to skin or rashes.

Thanks in advance.

I have many food allergies and what you describe is  the reaction I get, sometimes followed by a migraine.  I was allergic to beef and didn't eat any for years and have slowly introduced it back into my diet.  I have noticed that I have been eating too much of it and I am starting to have the same old reaction to it.  I guess I couldn't be happy with just a little bit of beef once a month or so.

I am also allergic to corn and had not had popcorn in a number of years and bought some microwave popcorn recently, still can't handle that.  I gave the rest of the box to my daughter.  It was that or throw it away, because it was so good.  I never thought I could get used to going to a movie with out popcorn, but I did.

I have had allergies for years, but had the RAST test when I was tested for the food allergies about 15 years ago.  This type of test is more expensive than the skin test and is done through blood work.  It was certainly helpful for me.

You could probably try process of elimination of certain foods, especially if you have UC, you don't need to upset your system any more than necessary.  Have you talked to your doctor about the possibility of food allergies?

I've seen studies connectiong beef and some other foods to increased flares in UC, so it may be a metabolic pecularity for some with UC. If I were you, I'd avoid beef (except maybe grass fed organic beef on an occasional basis only) and eat as few packaged/processed foods as you can. The connection between beef & packaged food and UC is most likely the chemical additives and sulfur/sulfite preservatives. Vitamin B12 can counteract sulfites, so make sure you are taking a Vitamin B12 supplement daily (a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement is probably a good idea).

Take care,

i have a major beef allergy, and when i eat beef, fish, egg, tomatoes, and shellfish i break out in hives, and my throat starts to close up, so thats why i carry around a Epi pen with me, the thing is that i can easily die from this allergy. its horrible, I'm 18 years old and my allergy list is only getting worse every month.

Hi groovey,

I totally agree with your findings. Since I switched to organic & tried to eliminate anything synthetic my allergies are heaps better.

Hi jiggins,

Yes! I have no idea why but I think red meat, specifically, contributes to my acne. I have cut it out of my diet for a about a month now (along with some other foods) and I don't believe I've gotten any new pimples (just have scars). At some point I intend to re-introduce red meat. Seem to be fine with chicken and fish.
