Does anyone have problems with skin-picking and/or trichtillomani (compulsive hair pulling)?

I've been struggling with skin picking since I was 13 and started having trich issues in the last year or two. It fluctuates in severity but it's starting to get worse again and I want to stop before it gets more out of control!

I have a lot of shame about having these issues (which clearly helps my existing anxiety/depression) so I'd love to talk to someone else who understands. Unfortunately, many therapists are unfamiliar with these conditions, and even the so-called "experts" are overrated.

There's more I could say, but I'll wait to see if anyone else knows what I'm talking about...

I know what your are talking about. Recurrent pulling out of one's hair resulting in noticeable hair loss. An increasing sense of tension immediately before pulling out the hair or when attempting to resist the behavior. Pleasure, gratification, or relief when pulling out the hair. This
is a type of compulsive behavior and its causes are not clearly understood. Symptoms usually begin before the age of 17.

Compulsive Skin Picking (CSP) is the repetitive picking at one's own skin to the extent of causing damage. Usually, but not always, the face is the primary location for skin picking.
To the best of my knowledge both are OCD behaviors. Please do not feel shame coming here to talk about your problems.  We are all the same here and we are here to help each other. I hope that you will feel safe in the
A & P forum and will tell us as much or as little as you choose.

Keep posting.

There are therapists that are specifically trained in these issues
I would ask your doc to have you sent to one
CBT may help as well

Just so you don't feel alone, I pick the skin on my scalp. I have two spots that if you moved my hair and looked, there is an open sore there. I just dont let it heal and pick of the scar each morning. I don't even realize I'm doing it. Its like a nervous habit.

I have used behavior therapy to treat these conditions successfully but I must confess to being one of those overrated not experts. My success has come with clients I could give one to one supervision to and control all reinforcers.
