Hello all

I have been on here before I am currently on the Gerd section. I was dx with gerd on the 30th October 2007. The weirdest thing about having this problem is I never suffered heart burn just a burning sensation at the top of the shoulder blades & a very sore throat. I have had lots of blood test done all normal I had an ultrasound done on the liver & gallbladder that was normal. I went to ER on the 28th of November with pains in the chest & aching pain on the left arm they gave me a ct scan & ecg & said everything looked ok my lungs & my heart. Now for the past 4 days I have this problem again I am at my wits end. I was wondering if this could be anxiety related. I have to admit everytime I have something i feel like its the end of the world. A lot has happened to me in the last 3 years. I got married to an American & moved here from the UK leaving my daughter who did not want to come with my mum, she is 19 so she wanted to stay. I also have had 2 children 1 is 18 months & the other is 7 months. All my illnesses seem to come when i was 5 months pregnant with the 2nd child & I have not been right since. I did have my children at an older age I was 38 with the 1st & 39 with the 2nd so this could have put a tole on my body.

Me my husband & children are flying to the UK on Saturday to visit so was hoping my pains would subside.

I would really like to hear your suggestions if you think this could be possible health anxiety & would you get such chest & arm pains with anxiety. Also I thought I would mention I have lost 50lb in weight & that was while being pregnant as well & I am always tired. I just feel everytime I go to the doctors & ER they seem to put everything to gerd.

Thankyou in advance for your replys

First of all how are you Red? Nice to meet you! I have been dealing with panic attacks and anxiety for 10 years now! When i first started having it in 1996 i had alot of different symtoms ranging from shortness of breath to being scared to swallow my food in fear that i would choke also being scared to be around alot of people and going out in public.Basically any social situations. Then at one point my chest use to feel like it was very tight and my stomache would be in knots. My point in telling you this is to let you know that anxiety can present it self in many forms i've had lots of strange symtoms since i've been diagnosed with this disorder!! Feeling like its the end of the world everytime something happens is definitely a symtom of anxiety! People with anxiety including myself worry about their health constantly anytime they feel something new in their bodies they panic and think of the worst case scenerio.Although i dont think i've ever experienced chest pain or the pains in my arms i'm sure alot of people even on this forum can tell you that is at the top of the list in anxiety sufferers. I'm not saying that is your case because it may not be anxiety but it sounds like it could potentially be.Being that far away from your family in the UK could definitely bring on feelings of anxiety i'm sure. But to be absolutely sure i would consult with a DR.I know you said you went to the ER but i suggest that you get your own private DR so you can make sure you get everything checked out.I hope that helped you some, good luck and have a safe trip back to the UK!

Are you taking any statins(for high cholesterol) or any new meds?
If you are clear on all tests that would reassure me, it could also be a cervical spine nerve compression.
I am no doctor, but a heeluva great nurse. I think you should try an ortho doc or neurologist. Spine issue can cause these things.
So can Fibromyalgia as well as a million others.
Wishing you well!:)

thankyou for your replys, I dont take any medication only achiphex for gerd which has not helped, I have also had other medication for gerd which has not helped. I have an appointment for a PH bravo test at the end of the month to determine how much acid I produce if any, so if I dont have acid I will most certainly look into this further. The chest & arm pain dont happen all the time this is what makes me wonder if anxiety is causing it.

Thank you all so much

Yes this can be anxiety and if you have had all the tests then IMHO I would like to suggest you see your physician and ask for something to help with the anxiety.  Your going on a trip, a long flight and your bound to be feeling anxious even if your looking forward to going.

Talk to your Dr. and tell him about the anxiety and the possible need for medication.

You might try this: Relaxation exercises are techniques to relax muscles and relieve tension by using controlled breathing and muscle flexing. They usually involve sitting down in a comfortable chair, closing your eyes and systematically tensing and relaxing different muscle groups in your body, usually starting with the legs and feet.
Take care and keep posting.

I had similar problems a while back and was told it was probably acid reflux (cardiac stuff was fine). The sore throat could well be due to the reflux, as of course could the chest pains. I know it's easier said than done, but if you were checked out by a doctor whilst experiencing these symptoms I think you can be fairly certain it's not anything physically serious. Anxiety can subject to the symptoms and I think to a certain extent the 'experience' of having many horrible conditions, but it will get better. There were a few other brief ones, but I "had" firstly a 'brain tumour' then 'MS' and then a 'heart condition' whilst my problems were really bad last year and I utterly believed I had them. The outward symptoms were severre enough on occasions to mimick the onset of any and I had no doubt in my mind that I was suffering from them. And now..... I don't.

I still have occasional times when I worry, get hypersensitive or even gain a bit of a tremor, but it happens for a couple of hours every now and again, not months on end. So it does get better...

If in doubt check with the doctor, but if you have been ok'd then try to focus on other things. Excercise, meditation, hobbies....
